My 2006 Chevrolet Malibu's airbags did not function in two separate hard-hitting crashes. The car's engine light often comes on and stays on until I drive over a large bump in the road or slam on my brakes to give it a jolt. I also smell fuel periodically. The horn has not worked for many years. I took my car to a dealer once with the request to replace my ignition switch because it gets stuck intermittently, and they strangely refused to replace it because "it isn't malfunctioning for us." This was before the recalls became public. They did repair the "high tone" horn but it stopped working within a few months. I believe I have a dangerous vehicle.

problem #16

Jan 052015

  • 122,000 miles
The first thing that happened was my passenger side rear door just suddenly flew open while I was driving my vehicle down the road. Doors were locked and all were completely closed and the door just came open for some unknown reason. Had my mechanic take a look and he couldn't see anything unusual about the mechanism or anything on the door. It has happened several times since so now I put the seatbelt through the door handle and pull it tight and lock seatbelt into place so if it happens the door won't fly open again. The second issue I am having is with the airbag warning light and alarm coming on randomly when I am driving my car. I took it into the Chevy dealership for one of the other recalls and they said that to put it on the tester, it would cost me $120 (which I cannot afford to pay), so they just let it be and fixed the recall I brought it in for. I am still having the problem and I notice that when the warning light is off and I press the comes on immediately and beeps at me. Is this a safety issue to be concerned with" with all the issues and recalls this car has been having I am not sure if it's an issue to be concerned about or not or just wait to hear on another recall or" I can't pay that to have it actually diagnosed.

The contact owned a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While the driver was driving at high speeds, the steering wheel seized and the driver lost control of the vehicle. As a result, the driver crashed into a guardrail. The vehicle spun and crashed into another guardrail. The air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained minor bruises and scrapes that did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14V252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control), 14V153000 (steering), and 14V224000 (power train); however, the parts needed for the repairs were unavailable. The failure mileage was unknown.

On October 15, 2014, I was on my way to work when the steering in my car suddenly and completely went out. For no reason, my car lost control and began to swerve and the wheels began to squeal. My steering wheel was easily movable, but the car would not go in the direction that I turned the wheel. I almost hit another car head on if she hadn't stopped her car. I also couldn't stop the car. As I applied the brakes, the car did a complete 360 turn as it continued to travel down the street. The car finally hopped the curb and hit a light pole on the front driver's side. The car finally stopped, but felt like it wanted to continue to drift until I took the key out of the car. My car has been declared a total loss by my insurance company and I could've died had I hit that other vehicle head on, or if that pole hadn't stopped my vehicle. No airbags ever deployed.

Was driving and saw a deer in the road. When I pressed the brakes they locked and then the pedal went to the floor as if the brakes went out. At that time the steering was difficult. The vehicle went through a field through 2 fences and over a ditch before coming to a stop. The engine did not shut off. There was major front end damage, from the fence posts, and the air bags never deployed. The vehicle was declared a total loss due to the damage.

When first starting the car and also while driving the air bag indicator comes on and information center reads service air bag along with an alarm. When this happens all the above-mentioned warning lights and read out may stay on for the entire ride or go off shortly after coming on. Has not affected the driving or handling of vehicle. I am concerned that if this happens before an accident will the air bags deploy.

I called in this complaint on 03/13/20014 to robin with complaint # 10568974 but it will not show up on search. The air bag light comes on and off at will. I called a complaint to Chevy. Customer service #[xxx]. on 07-12-12 the steering pump assembly was changed by special coverage adjustment 10183replace steering column installed 25933396 column. We are sure it was not a 2006 column but a newer year that has a recall on it. The Chevy. Forum has a lot of recalls on air bags. The local dealer O"rielly will not do a scanner check for codes unless the light is on. We had it done a our automotive dealer and it showed code B0012 drivers deployment loop. We consider this a safety issue and should be covered by warranty or a recall on the new steering column. We would like this issue repaired at no cost to us. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

  • 127,512 miles
I was driving on the interstate on 11/18/2012, when a car cut across all three lanes. It had not been raining, and the roads were dry, but when I applied my brakes to avoid hitting the car that cut me off, my wheels locked up sending me fishtailing at 70+ mph. I slid into the center lane, striking a vehicle on my right rear corner panel. I then repeatedly tried to pump my brakes and turn into the skid to regain control of the vehicle, and each time the wheels locked up again. After failing to regain control of my vehicle I hit the center guard rail, still going 60+ mph, collapsing the whole left side of my vehicle. After skidding to a stop, my "service airbag" warning came up on my center dashboard display, without even deploying. My car has been deemed totaled by insurance, and is no longer safe to drive. I was the only person in the car at the time, and emt's and fire fighters that arrived to the scene said if it weren't for the lack of cars on the road, I may not have survived.

Me and my daughter were driving to the store, we had passed an intersection it was a green light and the car in front of me slammed on her brakes, I responded with slamming on my brakes as well, however I could not avoid hitting the car in front of me head on, who then hit the car in front of them. The entire front end of my car was destroyed. I was in shock and could not believe my air bags did not deploy. Both me and my daughter still suffer from neck and back pain.

On May 1st 2009, while I was driving my 2006 Chevy Malibu on the highway, the airbags of the driver and passenger side were deployed. I was hit by the airbag and lost control of my vehicle. According to the other driver, I hit her car from the behind. I was blacked out at that moment and can't not recall the accident. Luckily, neither of the cars did not have any obvious damage. I sent my car to Chevy dealer and the Chevy engineer diagnosed a malfunctioned sensor that mis-triggered the airbags and they fixed it for free. I do not file this complaint for compensation. I just want people to be aware of this problem because it could be very dangerous on the road. Thank you very much your time!

My 2006 Chevy Malibu ltz was totaled in a 3 car accident. No front or side air bags were deployed. The point of impact was front driver side and head on front end. My vehicle was towed from the scene of the accident and was totaled, so how can it be that no air bags were deployed? I have a report from GM that said that the air bags functioned as designed. Makes no sense! please help!
