I purchased a 2001 Prizm after research and found Consumer Reports highly recommended the Prizm as I was a single mom and wanted something dependable and economical. At about 75000 miles started noticing had to add a quart of oil in between oil changes. As I had a 100,000 extended warranty had to keep taking it to the dealership. They changed various things, sent me on my way and I kept monitoring and it kept burning. First, it was one quart every 1000 miles for a while then eventually when I was close to approaching 90,000 miles it started burning a quart every 300 to 500 miles! I had it! Took all of my receipts for oil changes and logs into the Chevy dealer in which I purchased the car from and demanded a replacement engine. I got one...... but, don't get excited yet...... Every thing's been great until guess what..... I approached the 80,000 mile mark in my second engine. I have been having to add 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. Here we go again. Obviously, there is some manufacturers defect and Chevy knows it and they just don't care. The car runs fine for now, but I know from experience that the problem does eventually get worse. So adding oil is not the only expense and inconvenience. The problem does accelerate. I am afraid I'll forget to monitor my mileage driven and burn up the engine entirely! I am so glad I found this web site, at least I know this is a significant problem and not only my own.
