CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 has an early trend of the transmission shifting hard, surging & jerking.

At the moment these trucks are still under warranty. However this transmission problem shows up right away with the average reported mileage only around 3,000 miles, so for now the 2017 Silverado earns our "Beware of the Clunker" badge.

Silverado 1500 4x4 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 30,917 miles

The engine light came on, so I took the truck to O'Reilly auto, where they hooked up the OBD. I don't remember the code, but when they looked it up, it indicated a fuel injector problem. Took the truck to my mechanic, and after they did an initial evaluation they said the all 4 injectors on the drivers side of the engine needed to be replaced. The 4 injectors on the passenger side weren't as bad, but would eventually need to be replaced and recommended doing all the injectors at the same time, so it would be just one job now, and not have to bring it in again to replace the other bank eventually.

I okayed replacing all 8, and have no regrets about that, but having to have injectors replaced with only 30,917 miles on the engine and the outrageous cost, made me pretty angry. Never had to have a major repair on any vehicle I've owned with only 30K miles on it, new or used. I spoke to the dealer, Riverton Motors, they even admitted there was a problem. There should be a national recall for these injectors if anyone has had to have one or all replaced with less than 60,000 miles, or better yet 100,000 miles. I read that only 13 states have authorized replacement. The NHTSA should get on this too.

Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission

Went to leave work on Sept. 11, 2020 and a turn of the key presented a reduced engine power message. Started vehicle with much whining and shaking from the vehicle. Turned off the engine and restarted multiple times with same msg and symptoms. Final turnover of engine produced normal operation and an immediate drive home. Note: First time occurrence.

First check engine light. Dealership coded a "cold start rough idle" and a fuel injection replacement would be required. In addition, this was the first time the transmission issues strayed - low gear clunking and jerking. The dealership reset computer and it went away for weeks. I feel as if the sh*t computers on these vehicles report incorrect messages and bring about phantom mechanical issues. The truck runs fine when codes are reset. These trucks are lemons.

The 2nd time @ 10545 km's the vehicle's engine had a rough start, quite shaky, & stalled. It was able to restart and drive safely to the dealership. Another leaking high pressure fuel pump.

Silverado 1500 LT All Star 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,500 miles

I bought this truck in August of 2017. From the beginning it hesitated when lightly accelerating form a stop at around 1200-1500 RPM. The end of December 2017 I brought it in for first oil change at 4000 miles to Huntington Chevrolet and told them to check the hesitation while they had it. Of course they gave me the usual "Operating as designed" answer as well as "We checked for codes and didn't find any" answer as well.

So, fast forward to February 2018 with 5500 miles. As I was getting ready to take a trip upstate my check engine light came on (couldn't take it upstate). I brought it in to Chevy 112 in Medford, NY. They told me it's #3 cylinder misfire. They'll need it for a few days. They had to call tech services in Detroit. Turns out all the fuel injectors on the 1,3,5,7 bank need to be replaced. So I thought "YAY" the hesitation will be gone when I get it back. NOT!!! Still does the same think at 1500 RPM. I should have replaced the engine in my 2004 Suburban. I miss it bad. On to the transmission complaint in my next post.
