CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 is the worst year for PT Cruiser engine complaints. Having an engine light on is annoying, but it's the complaints about the engine shutting-off while driving that really have us concerned.

PT Cruiser Turbo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,000 miles

This problem has been going on for several years. All of the red warning lights come on the dashboard and the gauges all drop down, This has happened mostly with hot weather. Sometimes it loses power when this happens as well, especially if just pulling out into the street, which is very scary!

Update from Jul 1, 2015: I took the car to the dealer about 2 years ago and of course, they couldn't find anything wrong!

PT Cruiser 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 49,000 miles

We've had the same problem mentioned in numerous entries on this site with our '06 P.T. Cruiser. Indicator lights come on, starting with seat belt icon then all the others. Gauges all drop down, and several times when the lights stay on, engine dies. As we have a manual transmission, I have been able to compression start the car in motion. This has happened many times, it occurs in spurts. Dealer didn't have a clue after doing a "diagnostic." Obviously Chrysler is aware of this. It really seems similar to the G.M. ignition switch issue. We're afraid to take the car on the freeway, let alone out of town!

PT Cruiser Touring Edition 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,600 miles

I've had multiple "MYSTERY" issues with this vehicle since I drove it brand new off the Chrysler-Dodge Dealership lot (Feb. 2006) up until the present:

Door ajar chime - rang until each door/hatch was opened & closed several times.

This only happened on one occasion, but that same day/drive rear windows opened (dropped down) by themselves while driving. No one in the car touched the window buttons.

PT Cruiser Model 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 67,400 miles

It started in 2013 after the new fan was put in. The connector kept getting corroded. Only when it is warm outside, the electrical system goes haywire, e.g., the hatchback latch will click several times then unlock but not pop open but the gate warning light comes on and the interior lights come on. Then the seat belt will pull out slightly killing all the electrics in the car and it dies right there. In addition, the car will not lock with the remote even standing right next to the car and finally, I have to use the key to unlock the hatchback. All this happens only when it's warm outside. If the temperature is 40 degrees outside the car runs fine. If it is 75 plus degrees outside the electrical system just freaks out and all the idiot lights come on while driving and the car will just die. My mechanic thinks it's the computer that needs to be reprogrammed. I called the dealer and they say it's not the computer but they have no idea what it is and want me to bring it in so that they can start from scratch and run up a huge bill. I am hoping that someone will have an answer to this problem. Have any other PT Cruiser owners had this problem? If so, how did you get it fixed?
