CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 is the worst year for PT Cruiser engine complaints. Having an engine light on is annoying, but it's the complaints about the engine shutting-off while driving that really have us concerned.

PT Cruiser LT V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 200,000 miles

The transmission won't shift. Check engine light comes on (stays on for a couple days). Have to pull over and count: one one thousand, two one thousand and on to 15 one thousand before restarting. Then it goes; no other weird quircky issues.

The dealership replaced some module that controls the transmission for $1200. Did not fix the car.

PT Cruiser Limited

  • Automatic transmission
  • 146,000 miles

I have to start the car in neutral most times. Last week it would not go into park or neutral to start. After maybe10 minutes, the key turned but I decided to not drive the car until I can get somebody to look at the problem. I had to get a ride to work with a co-worker. My most concern is being stranded someplace.

PT Cruiser Touring

  • Automatic transmission
  • 67,000 miles

Car started having problems shifting gears at about 20 mph and again at 60 mph. Car would "cough" and buck very bad when attempting to change gears. I would have to let up on the gas then it would shift into gear at the 20mph stage but would not at the 60 mph stage. Everytime I would have to pull over and turn the car off. Sometimes it would start back up and the problem was corrected, but most of the time it would not start back up until I sat there for a few minutes and pumped the gas pedal.

Needless to say, I will never own another Chrystler again. We have fixed it enough to sell it.
