CarComplaints.com Seal Of This Might Hurt

CarComplaints.com Notes: The third generation Durango is plagued by a defective TIPM, particularily in the 2011 and 2012 model years.

TIPM, which stands for Totally Integrated Power Modules, is responsible for controlling and distributing power to all the vehicle’s electrical functions. So when your TIPM goes haywire, bad things start happening. Things like your water pump can stop working, your engine can stall out and your airbags can randomly deploy.

Chrysler tells me that there is no part to fix my problem. Then they tell me to have it fixed at another auto shop. This fix will cost me over $1000 and is just a bandaid. Don't trust them to reimburse me for the actual cost.

Over the past few weeks the Durango would start, then just shut off. More recently when you push the start button, the starter just runs and runs. Then you have to keep pushing the button to get the starter to stop. Eventually the vehicle starts but...it is not right at all.

I've had parking sensors replced, the whole wiring harness replaced due to corrosion, lost my brakes due to a bad brake booster, had an exhaust manifold bolt break off, seat stitching come out (when it was two week sold) fender liners hanging, a crooked exhaust pipe, service done by the dealer and vehicle returned with missing screws, interior parts damaged when dealer took out the interior to replace wiring harness, dealers refusing to honor tire rotation under the 3 year 36 month maintenance agreement, a dented hood from the dealer closing it too hard, chipped door edge from when it was in service, etc. I traded in a Honda Pilot with 15k miles on it for this piece of crap. The car I traded in was a perfectly reliable car. The new Durango looks nice and is a nice car when it's not broke, but look out. Mine has easily been in the shop 3 months since I got it.

Never heard of this part until my vehicle started acting up. It would just not start even though it was trying. I thought it was just a starter going bad or something small. Nope! I learned about TIPM and the nearly $1,600 it costs to replace it. In speaking with the technician I found out that it could go completely out at anytime, and if it did, my vehicle would be dead in the water no matter what I was doing. Scary thought. Especially if you're driving down the freeway. So, needless to say, we don't really have a choice when this part goes out.

What's sad is that the vehicle is only a few years old and has relatively low mileage. After getting off the phone with the technician I Googled TIPM and found all kinds of articles and learned that Chrysler has been struggling with this part on various models for several years. Hopefully they end up doing the right thing and covering this and reimbursing those of us who have no choice and have to replace the faulty part. To not do so is putting our lives and those around us in jeopardy.

It appears that there is a recall on the TIPM for 2011 Dodge Durangos. When I called NHTSA they told me my VIN did not fall under this recall!!

HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!! Clearly it is an issue! with my vehicle! I do not feel safe and I am afraid it is going to stall out in traffic and fear an accident. It is evident that this is an major issue and it's being ignored. All the dealership offered me was to waive the diagnostic fees if I had the override wiring, and possible replacement of the TIPM, done there instead of elsewhere. Then they said they need my vehicle for 3 days to test it, but could not provide me with a rental because they had to "watch their expenses, unfortunately." Seriously!!!

I so want out of this vehicle now!!! I am out of warranty and don't know what to do!

Been having this issue for a few months now and it only seems to get worse. First started out only having to try once or twice to get it to crank and now I have to try around three to four times. This morning was the worst it has ever been. And once it finally cranked I had all kinds of lights lit up. Brake, FCW off, Check Engine, Blind Spot Detectors were disabled and stayed on as well as my traction control being turned off and my ABS light. When I started to drive I realized on top of all those things my speedometer was also not working and said I was at 0. I have also had my alarm go off in the middle of the night for no reason.

This issue is really starting to get worse and worse and I fear I will end up stranded somewhere, or worse, end up in a wreck due to my car shutting off, and if I get in a wreck I don't even know if my airbags will deploy! Very disappointed in Dodge/Chrysler. I am not going to spend my hard earned money to replace these parts when I was sold a faulty car from the beginning. They need to get this recall going and have plenty of these items in stock so everyone won't have to wait months to have this replaced! This is ridiculous!

We waited for 3 weeks waiting for a call back, finally I called them and them they informed that the TIMP was on backorder for 3 months. They gave me a choice of replacing TIMP external wiring or being without a vehícle for God knows how long, never offered a loan car or a ride. Tow company I paid for the towing and handle everything by phone because that was my only car.

2011 Durango. Started having issues with failed starts. Starter keeps engaging and turning over. Takes multiple tries to get engine to start. Most times you can't get it to stop even when you hit stop button. Smells like engine is flooding and starter is burning up. Took to dealership and it's a faulty TIPM. Now it's going to be $1200 and on back order. Vehicle is unsafe to drive in meantime for fear of stalling. Wife and kids ride in this vehicle so I'm not taking chances. Used to be a Dodge fan, but not anymore. Next vehicle will be something different.

My vehicle started to have occasional issues starting. When attempting it would just keep trying to turn over but never would. I would have to turn it off, wait a bit then try again. It would sometimes take multiple attempts to get it started. At first, I was able to use the remote start instead and have no problems starting it. Eventually this became a daily problem and then even the remote would not work 100% of the time. Also, there was one occasion where the car just completely turned off after I backed out of a parking spot and put it in drive. Thankfully I was not going fast and was able to put it in park and start it back up and keep going. I can't imagine if something like that would have happened going at a fast speed. I did research prior to taking it into the dealership and found that it was likely a TIPM problem. When I dropped it off I explained the problem to the technician and told him everything I found through my research online. He was aware of the defective fuel pump relay inside the TIPM. They checked it out and it isn't just the fuel pump relay but that the fuel pump AND the TIPM need to be replaced. This is covered under my warranty. However, there is a back order on the part b/c there is such a widespread issue with this. I have rental coverage so am able to get a car while I wait for mine to be fixed. So far the dealership has been helpful and prompt helping me with my problem. I am thankful I will not have to pay out of pocket for an issue that is clearly due to some faulty parts in certain makes/models. However, I should be careful what I say because I haven't actually picked it up yet. :/

I did read that the fuel-pump relay is supposed to be recalled. It seems obvious this is a huge issue and needs to be addressed. http://www.edmunds.com/car-news/2011-dodge-durango-jeep-grand-cherokee-recalled-for-potential-stalling-problem.html

Again after 3 months tipm was replaced by external wiring. we need to replace again, starting to lose power and turn off when you do a complete stop. and don't even think that the dealer that we bought from and is doing the job is honoring their work. no no no they don't got space or mecánica. so i call another dodge dealership and i got to pay and extra 100 for the diagnostic and will see next week what the total is . So pissed off being without transportation and 4 years more to go.

We started having issues with our Durango not starting in June. It's progressively gotten worse. First it would take a few tries to get it started with the push start. Now it won't start with the push start. You have to use the key. This last week it's not started even with the key.

I'm seeing all these TIPM issues online and my Durango is also not throwing codes and is currently stumping the technicians at our dealership. We purchased the extended warranty with the sensor and electrical package so hopefully it is covered.

The recall for the external fuel pump relay was announced around 09/20/14. On 09/23/14 my durango started having trouble starting. It would take 2 or 3 tries to start but it started. On 09/26/14 it took more than 2 hours to get my car to finally start. I drove it straight to the dealership who promptly told me they hadn't heard anything about the recall. I had already spoken to Chrysler customer care who said that since they didn't have the VIN numbers yet that they couldn't do anything about it. I just spoke to the dealership who confirmed that it is indeed the part under the recall but that I will have to pay $530 to get my car repaired and then ask for a reimbursement when Chrysler gets around to sending out those letters. At the END OF OCTOBER. I called Chrysler Customer Care again to ask how the reimbursements work. She said once they receive my claim it will take SIXTY DAYS to process. So, I am going to have to spend the money I had saved in order to buy Christmas gifts for my 3 kids on repairing a part that has already been recalled. I won't get that money back until after Christmas, if I ever get it back. I'm a single mom of 3 kids and I live on a teacher's salary. This is going to hurt my family. I will NEVER buy another Chrysler product again. Their customer service sucks.

Recent 2011 Durango Recalls

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Recall for 2011 Dodge Durango Recall Announced: SEPTEMBER 04 2014

NHTSA Reference:

14V530000

Number Affected:

188,723

Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured January 5, 2010, to July 20, 2011, and equipped with either a 3.6L or 5.7L engine. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning.

Consequence: A vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump relay with one external to the TIPM, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 24, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P54.

I almost got in a wreck when my car stalled while driving, then would not start at all. It was luck that no one was hurt. I brought the car to Firestone because it was closest place. They diagnosed the bad TIPM unit but said we should take it to dealer since there are recalls for it. So we go to the dealer and they say there is no recall yet. They cannot help and have no loaner cars. I call Chrysler and find out there will be a recall (P 54), but not until at least October 24th. They said there is nothing they could do until then and would not pay car rental fees. They even hung up on me. They KNOW how dangerous this is, yet they dismiss it! It is being fixed now and will cost $1,200. As soon as I get my refund, I will be trading this car in for anything NOT Chrysler.

I bought this car used, I've only had it six months. My problem is the same as many others. You push the start, the car turns over once then turns off. After a few try's it starts. I took it to the dealer, I told them that I'd Googled and found many people with a defective TIPM. I got a diagnostic and was told I needed a new key! $300 later the problem went away for a week then returned and got worse!

When I called the dealer to complain I was told come in for another diagnostic......really??? I talked with the service manager for ten minutes and he wouldn't acknowledge THAT THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THE TIPM !!!!!
