Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

  • 107,150 miles

While driving down the freeway at approx 75 mph for 1 hour, vehicle suddlenly stopped accelerating, odo went blank, speedo zero, airbag and powertrain lights came on. I cut across 6 lanes of very heavy traffic to exit and struggled to get up the incline. Parked at the nearest lot and shut off the engine. Restarted with a loud clunk and dash was ok except powertrain light was still on. Put in reverse and felt a violent clunk. Drove to a nearby Ford dealership where they diagnosed bad turbine shaft speed and output shaft speed sensors. They performed the repairs at my cost of $856.91. I picked up the car and drove it 80 miles back home 2 days later with no problems. Today, 6 days later, I am experiencing extremely rough shifting, especially at around 40 and 60 mph and very bad hesitation where the entire vehicle vibrates and does not seem to know what gear to be in. Not only is this vehicle dangerous and defective, the expensive repairs are not correcting the problem and have made it worse.

I was driving on highway when car would not go, hit the gas but car did not move. Put into reverse and sounded like the transmission was going to drop, loud clunk. Fortunate to come upon a red light so cars were not moving fast to hit me or kill me! this happened another time in New Jersey! yikes!! and I had to pull over, shut the car off and then restart car. I immediately took car to dealer and they did not know what it was unless message was on control panel, I went on internet to see if I could find out any info for the problem. I did find a great many complaints from other people saying they had the same issues. I need to know who is responsible before I get killed. Is anything being done to resolve this problem and who will correct it? please advise.

Auto transmission will not shift, engine revs and no power, wrench light airbag warning lights, dead speedo, odometer shows dashes. Had trans fluid changed. No help. I have seen several problems noted on the internet. Dealers are not fixing the problem by rebuilding the trans for several thousand dollars. The trans failing should not affect the various electrical problems associated with this incident. The system will reset if the engine is turned off and then restarted with nothing indicating a problem. There doesnt appear to be any codes set. I urge Ford to embrace these problems before someone is hurt because the trans "jumps" out of gear and causes an accident. This reported problem should not be "news" to your complaints department. I have chosen to always prefer a Ford products during my 50 years of driving and expect an honest, thorough and concise investigation be given to this problem.

Takata recall - vehicle loses speed control power while driving. Wrench light comes on indicating service needed. When vehicle shuts off, resets itself and able to drive 100-150 miles and then the wrench light comes on again. Called dealership and was told that in order to identify the problem, the wrench light would have to be on for them to diagnose the issue. My sister does not drive much, so when it happened again, she happened to be close to an auto zone store and she stopped to have them to read the code in order to get the error reading. The code was P0715 - referring to turbine input speed shaft sensor. This is a safety issue and Ford should recall this as it is a known issue. I purchased this vehicle for my sister 6 months ago. At the the time in which I bought this car for my sister, 2 weeks later she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and cannot drive. She has her son or daughter to drive her to her medical appointments and where ever she needs to go. The last thing I need is for her to be involved in an accident and potentially die from a defect in which the manufacturer could have prevented. Ford needs to issue a recall on this before people are seriously injured or die. Why wait until something bad happens before you fix the issue is beyond anything that I can comprehend.

Clanking between gears at low speeds, on and off. The problem aould stop every time I brought it to Ford.. finally it got so bad one day it was just clanking between all gears, sounded like some one was smasing the under carriage with a sledge hammer. I thought the transmission went. Ford said it would be 1-2 month wait on part. They showed me 3 other Ford Edges sitting I N the shop with same problem. My extended warranty company found the part ( rebuilt one I believe) about 3 months later them same problem has started but less often. Everytime I bring it to fors the problem stops and I cant get it to do it when I want. So now the warranty is up... looks like I have to wait for the part to fail again and than im in the whole 1-$2,000 !! how can Ford not recall this with so many problems?

  • 100,000 miles
Driving down the highway at night at approx. 70 mph. All the warning lights came on in the dash. The speedo and odometer stopped working. No noise or vibrations noted. Pulled off exit and stopped at stop sign. Car would not move after pressing accelerator. Rpms very high and car began to roll forward. Eventually got up to 20mph. Stopped in parking lot. Shut car off for a few minutes. Restarted car and put into reverse. Loud bang and shudder. Felt like transmission was going to explode. Backed up, put car in drive, same violent reaction from transmission. Drove to destination and parked overnight. Next morning all was fine. Transmission appeared to function normally and all dash instrumentation was working. Occurred in summer of 2014.

Vehicle unexpectedly and randomly displays odo data error on instrument panel, mileage and speedometer don't function, vehicle loses all power and does not accelerate. This resets itself after turning car off, removing key, then restarting car. When are you going to force Ford to issue a recall, when someone dies? there are hundreds if not thousands with same complaints. Here's a sample...

Sometimes the transmission will not drive the car after a stop or if changing from drive to reverse or reverse to drive. RPM will go very high and only move the car very slowly. At other times there will be a bad shift or a strange sound. This can happen any time, when first starting out for the day, after running for a time, after a long drive or after stopping for a turn, red light, stop sign or just slowing down. The dealer says there is nothing wrong. Also noise coming from the rear while in motion. I believe the sensors are intermittent as I had a similar problem with my Dodge Caravan which went away after I replaced the sensors myself because the repair station told me there was nothing wrong after 3 attempts to have the problem rectified. You are all supposed to be professional experts so fix the problem.

Stopped at red light- whe I tried to accelerate the car would not move- it was terrifying!! cars had to go around- was able after at least ten attempts to get the car to move to side of road. Waited and called family member for help. Was fortunately about 5 blocks form my home. Car continued to jerk forward and had to stop seevral times. It is now in my garage and awaiting a tow truck, this has been an ongoing issue with the vehicle not specifically not going but troubles with car suring repeatedly for no reason and had to replace battery 4 times and there was nothing I did to create this loss of battery. The dealership where it was fixed previously stated that " the car appears possessed". this is somehting that has apparently been a long term known issue with this vehicle. Why has it not been fully investigated. Please do something before someone is seriously hurt or worse.

I bought this 08 Ford Edge sel AWD with 74000 miles. Ive had it less than a year and had the following problems. * stalling. * loud clunking in reverse and jumps into gear. * front driverside and passenger side window pillars are big blind spot. Very dangerous almost hit pedestrians. * vehicle rolls back on small inclines. Almost rolled into vehicle behind me. Very dangerous. * vehicle struggles in reverse up small inclines. * driverside headlight was out for a month cause car needed software update. Truck stalled again today this time I turned off and on wouldn't go in reverse instead drove forward almost hitting parked car... still have popping noise in front end clunking noise in reverse sometimes again.. im starting to get nervous cuz my daughter was in the car with me. - emailed to Ford service center rep. Oct. 1st. Ford mechanics say there is nothing wrong with vehicle yet it has stalled 4X and has problems in reverse. Car has been in the shop 6X for same issue. Im tired of bringing it back and forth.

I was driving out of town for a work meeting with an employee. Only going approx 45-50 mph, all the sudden the speedometer drops to 0 along with the mileage on my car(just dashes), then the airbag light came on and a wrench light came on then few minutes later the tire pressure light. We were coming up on a red light so I slowed down and stopped. When the light turned green I pressed my gas pedal and the car went no where. I slowly moved to the side of the road and shut my car off. I was hoping to make it to the gas station 2 miles up the road. I waited a few minutes turned my car back on a very odd noise happened the speedometer was back on and the lights were gone, I went to put the car in D and the odd noise again, pushed the gas to accelerate and nothing. Currently my car is on the side of the road waiting a tow 1 hour away from home. I'm lucky my children were not with me when this occurred, it could have been very dangerous. This was my first experience with this, not only dangerous but very embarrassing with an employee in my car as well.

I have a 2008 Ford Edge, I have been noticing over the past few months that at random times the car will lurch forward when accelerating as if it suddenly received a burst of speed. One day I was at a stop light and I took my foot off the brake so that I could drive and the car wouldn't move and when I pressed harder on the accelerator there was a loud bang noise that sounded like the car suddenly clicked into drive. It has been happening more and more often where it lags and sticks and lurches forward when it finally wants to go. Today, it had serious issues where I was trying to accelerate and the car was instead slowing down and lurching forward with the sound of the engine straining and making noise. I had to pull over because the cars behind me had to go around me. I was extremely nervous that the car would stall in the middle of the road or cause an accident. When I pulled over and turned the car off and then turned it back on the problem seemed to lessen I only drove at a low speed to avoid an accident. I have two children and this car is unsafe to drive. I will take it to the dealership asap. It also rolls backward on an incline. Ford needs to do a recall on this vehicle because I have done some online research today and see that many many people have experienced the same problems. This is an extremely dangerous issue and needs to be addressed.

  • 126,000 miles
Most recent 8/14/2015, pulled out into traffic and the car lost power, but the engine was still running. RPM's will go up, but the car will not move. Reverse works. Took it to auto zone, no codes will come up. When I bought it off the lot (9 months ago) it was working just fine and has been going down ever since. Since last November (11/2014) when I bought the car, when driving the cars speedometer will drop down to zero and a wrench light will come on with a few other lights and act like it is stuck in a high gear. After tuning the car completely off (key out of ignition and door opening and closing) and checking fluids I started the car back up and heard a loud clunk and when I put it into drive there was another clunk and after getting the car up to about 10mph (the car is still acting like its stuck in a high gear) there was another loud clunk and the transmission would catch and act like nothing happened. This process repeats ever single day unless I drive it with the over drive off, then it will still happen but about only twice a month. Ex:"V=sk3itic2-rs I have called Ford corporate after googling the problem and seem there are 1000's of cases explaining the same thing and they will only tell me "that's odd seems like your car is the only one that's doing this". I have taken it to several dealership, none of which will do anything because they cannot find a code. Even when the car has a wrench light on and will barley move. This problem needs to get resolved before a severe accident occurs. Have I mentioned this is my only car" from what I have read it could be a couple different sensors and if this is not resolved this was the only and last Ford I will ever own.

Driving and a major road the car suddenly slowed down, it looked like someone put the brakes on, someone almost hit me from the back. After that, the car was jerking and shaking and made load noises. Unable to drive the car in drive I put the car on low gear and drove to the dealer. I was told yesterday that it is a transmission problem the cost 5,200 dollars. In November 2014 the car was leaking transmission fluid and was told it was the ptu the car only had 62,000 miles.I was told that was not covered and cost me 1,800 dollars updated 09/08/15

As I was driving, dash flashed "odo data error", then wrench light came on followed by airbag, tpm, engine light, basically all warning lights, odometer went to zero, loss of accelaration, pulled over and placed in park, car was revving high, turned car off and restarted, same, put on drive, stepped on gas, car revved but no movement. Turned car off and waited couple minutes, restated, warning lights disappeared, odometer back to actual mileage. Put on drive, step on gas, hesitation then loud transmission thump and car started moving again.

Vehicle transmission failed in highway speed traffic, starting with large clunks and erratic shifting, total loss of acceleration, leading to very unsafe travel on freeway. No shoulder on road, stopped with no power to transmission.state police cordoned off the area enough for tow 45 min. Later. Still having problems with erratic stopping and going, sometimes you have to go to 3000 RPM until trans mission catches and causes unsafe acceleration. Only 50K on vehicle and Ford does not acknowledge a problem, many other complaints and video found on the web you-tube and such. How many complaints or injury's before a recall? please respond. Thank you!
