CarComplaints.com Notes: The NHTSA's complaint data shows potentially scary power steering problems with the 2011 Ford Explorer.

The steering complaints are pretty serious - owners report the power steering cuts out while driving. The NHTSA opened an investigation into the power steering problems in June 2012, which lead to a recall in 2014. However years later, many 2011 Explorer owners report this defect is still occurring.

It's too bad because the 2009 & 2010 Ford Explorer are solid, trouble-free model years.

The vehicle has had this issue since new, on Tuesday the transmission failed completely, it is now out of warranty and my regret is that I did not have them change the tranny at each time I reported it to the dealer, advise to anyone else, get it dealt with, because this is clearly leading to premature failure. If you have warranty get the tranny changed now, do not wait do not accept the dealers excuses.

Explorer XLT 3.5L-Liter V6

My 2011 Explorer does a bump as if the car can't figure out how to smoothly transition back to a lower gear when decelerating. Once the car decelerates to 20mph it sort of hard shifts causing a bump or jolt. I fear the transmission, clutch or engine will have a major issue down the road if not addressed. The problem has caused the vehicle to longer feel like it did when first purchased and now gas consumption has increased and a slow start from a stop.

Dealer attempted to fix the issue by following a FORD TSB that instructed a computer refresh or update of some sort to clear up the issue, but it seemed to work for less than a week till the issue returned. I have since returned the vehicle for the same issue, obviously, but now the dealership was giving me what I felt was a run around for whatever reason so I escalated it with FORD's representative team. I haven't had a chance to return since escalating it due to not having sufficient time to bring it in and potentially deal with the hesitant and slow process of getting a rental car approved for the fix. Hopefully, I can turn in the car next week (Oct 1-3).

While we have loved this vehicle, it has had it's more than fair share of tiny annoyances, but that was somehow to be expected from a first generation of any car. All of the previous issues were addressed and fixed by dealer, but this issue is the latest and most annoying.
