CarComplaints.com Notes: The NHTSA's complaint data shows potentially scary power steering problems with the 2011 Ford Explorer.

The steering complaints are pretty serious - owners report the power steering cuts out while driving. The NHTSA opened an investigation into the power steering problems in June 2012, which lead to a recall in 2014. However years later, many 2011 Explorer owners report this defect is still occurring.

It's too bad because the 2009 & 2010 Ford Explorer are solid, trouble-free model years.

Was getting in my Ford Explorer on the morning of March 18, 2015 and my rear window exploded and shattered. This repair is going to cost me $400 out of pocket. Not happy, no explanation why this happened, just annoyed that I have to dish out $400 out of my own pocket.

My 2011 Ford Explorer was parked in my driveway, as it had been since the previous day. I went outside to move the car and opened the driver's door. With the door remaining open I put the keys into the ignition switch and started the engine. At this point I closed the driver side door. This is the moment that I heard a loud "POP" sound. I looked in the rear view mirror and could see that the rear window had a large hole in the upper center section of the glass. The pieces that were remaining still attached the the car were spider-ed and completely cracked. The window looked like it got blown outward behind the car. Small pieces of glass were covering the ground outside behind the car as well as inside the rear compartment of the car. Luckily, no one was behind the car and the vehicle was parked in a driveway when this occurred.

The opportunity for this type of defect in the rear window to create a much more hazardous (or potentially fatal) occurrence is very high. I am thankful this did not happen in an instance where my wife and/or two small children could have been harmed. From the research I have done it appears that this happens to a number of Ford SUV style vehicles. Although I understand the massive expense of recall for the FORD Motor Company, I really thought they were a true American Company. A company that stands by its products and processes and a company we could be proud to endorse. Instead we have an issue that is being largely ignored by the manufacturer. Please understand, repair and recall the exploding rear window problem before my family or anyone else family is seriously injured.
