NHTSA Defect Investigations for the 2015 Ford F-150

The Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) is an office within the NHTSA which investigates serious safety problems in the design, construction or performance of vehicles. The NHTSA is authorized to order manufacturers to recall and repair vehicles, if the ODI finds a safety issue. NHTSA investigations for the 2015 Ford F-150, both ongoing and closed, are listed below:

  1. INVESTIGATION: Seatbelt Pretensioner Fire

    Summary: On June 18, 2018, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE18-008) to investigate complaints alleging post-crash fires at the B pillar in the area of the seat belt pretensioners on MY 2014-2018 Ford F-150 Regular Cab, and Super Crew Cab Vehicles. On August 24, 2018, Ford Motor Company recalled (FSA 18S27 - NHTSA #18V568) the affected population. Ford's investigation found that some front seat belt pretensioners may generate sparks during deployment in excess of Ford's specification. Sparks in the pretensioner exhaust gases inside the lower portion of the B-pillar may subsequently ignite combustible components contained in the B-pillar, such as insulation or carpet, and may cause a subsequent vehicle fire. ODI also requested relevant information from other manufacturers to assess the potential scope of post-crash pretensioner fires. Ford will notify owners and require dealers to remove B-pillar insulation material and wiring harness tape, and install heat resistant tape, free of charge.     Summary: In May 2016, Ford Motor Company issued a safety recall (16V-345) to address loss of the front brakes in certain model year (MY) 2013 and 2014 Ford F-150 pickup trucks with 3.5L engines (covering those built from August 2013 to August 2014).Ford reported the problem was caused by the loss of brake fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir into the brake booster, which can lead to visual and audible warnings of low brake fluid level to the operator.This recall was influenced by the Office of Defects Investigation's (ODI) Preliminary Evaluation, PE16-003, that was closed in July 2016.Now ODI has received 25 complaints alleging sudden loss of brakes in MY 2015 and 2016 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with 3.5L engines.There appears to be a difference in the reported symptoms between the complaints on the MY 2015 vehicles (10 reports) and those on the MY 2016 vehicles (15 reports).The MY 2015 complaints allege symptoms of brake pedal going to the floor with sudden and complete loss of brake effectiveness, brake warning lamp illumination, and/or low or empty brake fluid level, which are consistent with the symptoms associated with the aforementioned recall, while the MY 2016 complaints allege a sudden and complete loss of brakes without the brake warning lamp illumination and low brake fluid level.However, some of the MY 2016 complaints allege that repair facilities diagnosed the problem as a failure of the master cylinder.A Recall Query has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.safercar.gov under the following ODI identification numbers:10734951, 10839988, 10862418, 10872737, 10873438, 10876359, 10881590, 10883442, 10885352, 10888026, 10888524, 10891826, 10891829, 10891886, 10893632, 10894688, 10894844, 10896122, 10896446, 10898079, 10899093, 10899198, 10902944, 10903776 and 10904695.

  3. INVESTIGATION: Champion Ford Edinboro / Steering Shaft

    Summary: NHTSA opened AQ17-001 to determine whether Champion Ford Edinboro, Inc. (Champion Ford), of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, complied with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301 (Safety Act) and its implementing regulations. The Safety Act requires, among other things, that a manufacturer notify its dealers of defects related to motor vehicle safety and non-compliances with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and, in turn, that a dealer not sell a new vehicle subject to a recall unless the recall remedy has been performed (49 U.S.C. 30120(i)).NHTSA issued an information request (IR) letter to Champion Ford on January 4, 2017.Champion Ford responded to this request on January 19, 2017.Also on January 4, 2017, an IR letter was issued to Ford Motor Company (Ford) and a response was received from Ford on January 25, 2017.Finally, another IR was issued to Champion Ford on May 31, 2017, and Champion Ford's response letter was submitted to NHTSA on June 14, 2017.NHTSA's investigation indicated that Champion Ford did sell and deliver recalled vehicles that did not have the recall remedy completed at the time the vehicles were delivered to the customers.NHTSA therefore concluded that Champion Ford was liable for civil penalties for violations of the Safety Act, pursuant to 49 U.S.C. 30165.Under a Settlement Agreement dated April 16, 2018, Champion Ford agreed to pay compromised civil penalties in the amount of $20,000.Champion Ford also represented in writing that it repaired all twenty-three (23) recalled vehicles identified in AQ17-001 and will strictly adhere to Ford's procedures requiring dealers to check for outstanding safety recalls prior to customer delivery.NHTSA's Recall Management Division has verified that all twenty-three (23) vehicles have been remedied of the safety recalls identified in AQ17-001.This Audit Query is closed.
