Driving the vehicle, engine stalled. Unable to restart as engine had seized. Up to this time, the oil pressure and water temperatures were in the normal operating ranges, and oil level was within range as well.

I was driving my 1999 Ford F150 4X4 with 5.4L engine home from work and stopped at traffic light. The light turned green and I proceeded to go and then "pow" the truck began to make a loud "popping" noise and lost all engine power. I was in the middle of the intersection and somehow managed to keep it running long enough to get through the intersection and on a side road. I hesitated to open the hood because of the strong gasoline smell but it wasn't on fire "yet" so I opened it and found one of my ignition coils (coil packs) loose on top of the intake manifold. Upon further inspection I realized the spark plug had blown out of the aluminum cylinder head. I was able to catch a ride to the auto parts store with coil and plug in hand. The salesman at the store immediately knew what had happened and even knew the engine was a 5.4L before being told. He said that if I was lucky I would probably just have to install a helicoil or threaded insert in it. The other option was to replace the cylinder head. I purchased new coil and plug then drove back to my truck. I tried to clean the threads with a spark plug thread chaser but there were no threads left to clean. I searched the web and found numerous complaints of the same issue. Some people said they had multiple spark plugs blow out or "spit out" on the same vehicle. Why doesn't Ford have a recall on this" the gasoline smell was due to the fuel injector still spraying while the plug was blown out of the head. What if it had caught on fire" I haven't repaired it yet but will try the "repair kit" that was handed to me when I bought the coil and plug. I think Ford should recall all the 5.4L engines that have this problem and install the helicoil or insert to prevent a customer breakdown or a potential vehicle fire.

Ford 250 light duty truck blew #4 plug out of head while driving approximately 35 mph. Truck odometer registered 88,000 miles and affected spark plug was the original equipment. Vehicle had to be towed tenvoorde Ford, saint cloud mn to effect repair. Repairs involved an insert kit for the #4 cylinder and totaled $950. Vehicle was operating in traffic at the time of the incident, the blown plug created a noteworthy distraction and sudden loss of power requiring the vehicle to be maneuvered out of the traffic stream. This problem has been well documented from dealership databases to internet forums; everyone in the know is aware of this issue. It is not uncommon, but there seems to be a consensus that we're on our own. Ford needs to cowboy up with recall to fix the problem.

I have had two (2) spark plugs blow from my engine on two (2) separate occasions (1999 Ford F250 with 5.4 litre V8 with 150,000 km's). I'm not getting any cooperation from my dealer and in the research I have done on the net, it appears that this is a problem with several models and engines. Both times the dealer has repaired it with a "healy coil" at a cost of approximately $560 plus towing costs. Very dangerous as gas is ejected into the engine compartment. It appears that Ford has issued a technical bulletin to their dealers and the solution is to replace the defective cylinder head. Ok if you are under warranty. It will cost you approximately $3500 in Canada to fix Ford's defective part if you aren't.

I own a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck with a 5.4 liter Triton V8. My truck has 103K miles on it. I had just replaced all the spark plugs less than a year ago. Last week on my way to work, I heard a pop and the engine started making a bunch of noise, lost power and quit. Luckily, I was able to pull over into a parking lot and call a tow truck. Once getting it home, I noticed that a spark plug had blown out of the engine. My #3 spark plug on the passenger side blew straight out of the head and destroyed the ignition coil pack. After doing much research over the internet, I've found this to be a very common problem with these Ford engines and Ford won't do anything about it. This will cost well over $3000 to fix. It's a good thing my engine quit so soon, or I could have had gasoline spray out of the open cylinder and cause a serious fire.

I was driving home from work last week when my 1999 Ford F-250 5.4 liter V-8 Triton engine blew a spark plug out of the head above the #7 cyl. I had it towed to the local Ford dealer and they said it was caused by poor design, not enough threads in the head to hold the plug in. This is happening to a lot of Ford owners across the country and this is definitely a safety hazard and could cause fires in the engine compartment. They are making me pay the full cost of repair even though the mechanic said the problem is caused by poor design.

- the contact stated while driving at 55 mph saw a cloud of white smoke coming from the manifold. The contact pulled over, went underneath the vehicle, and noticed an oil leak on the passenger's side. There were no warning signs or indicator lights. The contact has not had the vehicle repaired. The contact found a recall #02227 for this failure. When he called the dealer to have the vehicle serviced, he was told this vehicle was not a part of the recall. The contact stated the vehicle had the same problem as described in the recall. Updated 1/31/2--7 -

1999 F250 spark plug blew out of the head. The coil that was bolted to the head was helping to hold the plug in the hole, which was a manufacturing design flaw or a casting flaw.

While driving my 1999 Ford Triton V-10 powered C-class motorhome in heavy traffic the engine made a loud bang. After the bang it continued to rattle badly and mis-fire. Worked my way across traffic and stopped in a no parking zone for 2 hrs awaiting a tow truck. We were in a fairly un-safe position, as the shoulder was limited and it was on the exit route for the California speedway just after a nascar race. The repair shop has told me that a spark plug blew out of the cylinder head. I'm learning that this is a common occurrence on this model engine.

I blew a plug on my Ford F150. Engine has had proper maintenance. It has about 80,000 miles on it. 5.4 V8 year is 1999. Called Ford and they will no acknowledge a problem and will do nothing to reimburse any of the repair costs. I think it is a faulty head on the Triton engines.

There is a common problem with the right side head gasket in 5.4L V8 engines in vehicles from 1999. This problem results in a blown head gasket that requires repair at great expense. In addition the repair that is approved by Ford is not permanent, so the vehicle many times has the same problem multiple times. I personally have a vehicle with this problem and have several friends with the same problem. I believe that Ford needs to issue a recall for this problem and fix it right so that recurrences do not happen.
