How can a car that is only 3 years old with just over 50,000 corrode from under the paint?

corrosion on hood

Spotted bubbling corrosion under the paint on the front driver's side edge of my hood. Spoke with my trusted body guy, he turned me on to the Ford problem with aluminum hoods. He suggested I go to the dealer and demand a repair. Providing me with an estimate, but showed me the damage goes far beyond the problem I found. It runs around the perimeter of the hood. He told me it was a problem with a water based sealant Ford used reacting with the paint.

Update from Jul 26, 2018: Spoke with Fullerton Ford in Somerville, NJ. Service manager stated that they can do nothing for the corrosion as long as it is just "bubbling", but will replace the hood at no charge if it corrodes through and "you can put your finger through it." He alluded to some extended body warranty, but was not specific. I cannot find this as official Ford policy anywhere, so I don't know if it is correct.

SHAME ON YOU FORD! You know this is a problem and yet you will not fix this for me and you act like you have never heard of this problem, I guess what bothers me the most is that they want to act like I am a the first complainer or that I am an isolated incident with the bubbling and corrosion on my hood! I don't have to drive a Mustang...just sayin.

I bought a 2012 Mustang and the car is in great shape, except for the corrosion on the inside lip of the hood. The paint is also bubbling on the outside. The dealer said they will not cover it because it is out of warranty.

corrosion on hood

I have been loyal Ford owner and so has my Family. I paid 45,000 for a 2012 Boss 302 Mustang, it just broke 30000 miles and there is rust developing around edge of hood. I took to dealer, they said not covered under warranty. I found out this is a aluminum hood, how does aluminum rust? More research showed Defects in Ford hoods and how rust around and under hoods are a common problem. I wrote Ford customer service, but pretty much told me same thing, past warranty, made in 2011. With customer service like that, I believe I have bought my last Ford product!

I am appalled with the way that Ford is handling this problem and treating there customers. This is my 7th and LAST Ford. I talked to customer service and the warranty department at Ford and was told, too bad you're on your own. REALLY? Shame on Ford for the way they are producing crap for a quick sale and treating there customers like sh*t. I would be surprised if they're still in business in 10 years.

2012 Mustang with corrosion on hood took to dealership. They sent request to Ford about repairs, but was 4 weeks out of warranty so they denied repair on corrosion. How can the consumer prevent corrosion under the paint and do they think the corrosion wasn't there 4 weeks ago? I know they have limited warranty but this is a DEFECT in there product not a bad shock or spark plug. Very disappointed in Ford for not standing behind there products, but I guess that's why they have a law suit against them.

Mustang Pony Edition Premium Convertible 3.7L V6

I bought a certified pre-owned Race Red 2012 Mustang V-6 Premium Package Pony Edition in Sept 2014. It had a little under 20k miles. It was pristine. I got a cancer diagnosis a week later. The car mostly sat in the garage while I underwent chemo/radiation for 6+ months. I am now cancer-free.

Earlier this month, I had it out in the sun and noticed a chip on the leading edge of the hood. I went to the dealer and bought touch-up paint. But when I started to clean the area prior to painting, I realized that the problem was corrosion that started under the front lip of the hood. I went on a Mustang owners’ website and now understand that this problem is not unique to my car and cannot be totally fixed short of installation of a carbon fiber or steel aftermarket replacement hood at the owner’s expense.

Last week, I took car to dealer who took my information and took photos to be submitted to Ford for approval of a resealing/repainting under my 3 year/36k miles warranty. I have not heard back. However, I am concerned that the repaint will not cure the problem, which could reappear after the warranty expires. I have a '95 Civic with a hood in better shape than my '12 mustang. Again, I am now cancer free. My Mustang? Not so sure. I am not happy. I feel Ford should offer an OEM steel hood or repaint every 2-3 years. Any suggestions?

Problem first noted as bubbling on the edge of the hood. Ford paid for hood to be removed, corrosion sanded, and hood repainted. They would not pay for stripes to be reinstalled. Ford warranty also does not cover this problem beyond the standard 3yr/ 36000 Bumper to Bumper. Dealership acts clueless and sings the party line when addressing this BIG problem! I was given the Ford Customer Service 18003923673 to file my complaints. I want to know what happens if this problem reoccurs after warranty ends since this is a known manufacturing issue which they are not FIXING. They need to get rid of the ALUMINUM hood. Corrosion not covered as warranty recently expired. Told to go to body shop. Estimator says grinding, sanding etc., does not work and hood needs to be replaced. Part cost for a new aluminum hood is $1501.68 plus tax. Labor 13 hours and end result is $2700. Who would pay this on a 3-year old car?

How does a new car start to have the hood rust out in less than three years. They fixed the rot but didn't replace the hood. Kept the car for a week and made me get a rental that they didn't want to cover for full rent. Had to complain to CSM who was able to reimburse me for rental fees

corrosion on hood corrosion on hood

I went to the Ford dealer and spoke with the service manager who immediately tried to lie and say that Ford's corrosion warranty is only 3 years / 36000 miles. It clearly states in the warranty I have and online that it is for 5 years and unlimited miles. Any 'Service Manager' would definitely know that. He just didn't feel like doing anything about it.

He took pictures and contacted Ford who he says rejected the claim and that corrosion means it would have to be rusted all the way through to be covered.

Looking around the internet I see a ton of people with the same exact corrosion on the lip of the hood. How can this not be covered on a car that is less than 3 years old?

Purchased a brand 2012 Ford Mustang V6 convertible back in August 2011...after only 3 years and 2 months of driving it from the dealership, it already shows paint bubbles and rust in the lip of the hood... the car has around 70,000 km...(bumper to bumper warranty is 3 years / 60,0000 km)... Ford's answer was basically "your warranty expired... sorry".

I wouldn't complain if rust forms on a 6 or 7 year old car... but rust already on a 3 year old car ????

Just as a side comment, I also purchased Ford's Extended Service Warranty for my Mustang... the Premium one... but guess what ? It doesn't cover rust/paint/body issues ! How convenient !

Ford knows of this problem and will not extend the warranty past the standard rust through warranty. It is a manufacturing problem and should be covered far past the standard warranty.
