At 45 mph vehicle lost power from transmission to wheels. It seemed to be slipping, and then it would grab and the vehicle would lurch. At times there was little or no control of the vehicle. Subsequently, the transmission was consistently upshifting late and downshifting early, and sometimes slipping. One repair shop could not determine what was causing the problem. Gene evans Ford quickly determined that a faulty vehicle speed sensor was the cause. (this also caused the cruise control to be inop). They replaced the sensor and the transmission and cruise control have performed flawlessly. The part cost $36.58. Labor was $305.46. The total bill came to $369.60. I consider this to be a safety issue, and I would like Ford to reimburse me for this cost. 6

This reported defect is the 2nd one for this vehicle, and it will be in the shop again on 2/6/01. The transmission slips through gears, doesn't stop the vehicle in park, and jumps over gears. Moving the shift lever from park to reverse can put the vehicle in nuetral, or park to drive can put the car into 2nd gear. The vehicle does not start in park, as it is not registering that the vehicle is in park. It can not be started in neutral all the time either, as the gear shift sometimes jumps right past neutral. To ensure the vehicle stays stopped when parked, I've had to engage the emergency brake for safety. I can no longer safely go to the drive through car wash, as the car has jumped the "rail" from neutral to drive, and stopped the whole car wash line.

After stopping, the transmission acts as if it's in neutral, then slams into gear. This occurs primarily at stop lights and signs at intersections and puts driver in fear of not being able to get out of way of on-coming traffic. This slamming/slipping can also occur at low speed, without a prior stop, such as when entering a driveway or turning a corner at an intersection with a yield sign. We have noted several potential tech. Service bulletins, which may apply to this problem, however the dealer we are using for service has been uncooperative and charged us for repairs that have not addressed the problem. (we recognize this last part of the complaint is more of a consumer's affairs problem, however, it is also leaving us driving an unsafe vehicle.).

When applying brakes car will shift from drive to neutral. Consumer has to stop, and put in park, then back in drive, . sometimes it works, and sometimes it does not. Consumer feels this is unsafe because consumer doesn't know when it's going to happen. The transmission failed prematurely.

The transmission failed as I was getting on to the highyway. It got stuck in first gear and had to be towed. Called many shops to get quotes on replacing the transmission, all complaining about Taurus' between the years of 92 & 95 having the same problem. Ford dealership said the problem was mechanical and not the fault of the owner. Contacted Ford co. To see if they would repair it and they denied my claim twice. If so many of these cars have the same trans. Problem shouldn't they be recalled? I think Ford should be responsible for defective trans. They manufactured and distributed.

To date, Ford maintains this engine is not covered by "secret warranty" although it is the same defect as the 3.8L. Persistent problem of leaking coolant. Transmission is unreliable and unsafe. A/C clutch, compressor and water pump failed simultaneously. Replaced heater hose following A/C repair due to continued leak.

Transmission exhibited a 'clunking' noise while cruising on interstate, then white smoke seen coming from back and underside of car as engine starts to whine. Pulled over to check problem as soon as noted since no warning lamps lighted inside vehicle. Once pulled onto shoulder, burnt transmission fluid burst under car. All other fluid levels were checked and found acceptable. When cooled down, car would not engage any gear. Needed to be towed to nearest Ford garage and told transmission needed replacing due to internal failure. No external trauma noted. Transmission cost over $2000 and Ford customer assistance would not offer any reimbursement. Routine transmission maintenance performed at 42300 miles. Personally, I feel that a well-maintained transmission should last longer than 49000 miles.
