The car became very LOUD, especially when accelerating, and I knew something was wrong. I kind of figured that it might be something to do with the exhaust system and it was diagnosed as being a cracked exhaust manifold. It seems like this is a common problem with Honda Civics and it has been so for many, many years. The people at Honda don't care enough about their customers to design a better, more durable, exhaust manifold.
I had the car repaired by a Honda dealer and I was told that the cost of getting a new manifold by an aftermarket company was $700 plus labor, or $1,000 for a new manifold from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) which would be Honda. The dealer didn't have the OEM part in stock and it would have taken another day, so I went with $700 aftermarket manifold.
Even after installing the new manifold the car seems really LOUD, especially when accelerating. I took the car back to the dealer and they reinstalled the manifold and said that the manifold gasket was somewhat misaligned. But it still seems LOUD. I took it back a second time, and the dealer says that it is just the way it is, but I'm not sure I believe him.
I know that it is a Honda Civic and not a quiet luxury car like a Lexus, but I feel like I'm driving around in a hot rod and it is kind of embarrassing that the car is so noisy. I'm planning to take it to an independent garage (one of the ones recommended on this website) pretty soon to get a second opinion.
