There is an ignition cyclinder issue with my 2009 Civic, and Honda Canada is apparently very poor at stocking this part, since they are claiming via the dealership that it will take anywhere between 5 and 25 days to get the part shipped on backorder.

I have a 2009 Honda Civic Coupe. for the first time in December i went shopping and stopped for gas on the way home. I put gas in and my car would not start. I tried several times with no success. 20 minutes later with the clerk screaming at me to move my car I tried again, no luck. On top of that my cell phone was dead. I asked the car next to me to call a tow truck. Simple jump start and my car was fine. I ran her for about another hour and that was it. Car seemed fine until this sunday and the same bloody thing happened. I had a mechanic come by and he tried to jump start it with booster box and his car and no success. All the dash lights radio and electrical work, I just get no sound until i turn key and it sounds like a weak beeping for about 20 seconds and then stops. Im not mechanically inclined so I dont know what to do. the mechanic was scrathing his head he coudlnt figure it out either. I see others have had this same problem. I would think when a starter goes you get a clicking sound, I dont get that. Its only silence until i take key out and then the beeping. similar to the seatbelt ringing. Can anyone help me??

Final repair for this old girl, apparently I'm only going to get 6 years and maybe 150,000 miles out of her. Owned Honda Civics all my life, 6 of them, and this will be the last one I buy. Most were in the 180,000 mile+ range and only had minor issues. The thing is just falling apart, every month it's something new, and exceeding a monthly car payment in repairs costs.

Judging from the internet, I'm not alone in my troubles with this generation. I know it was just a starter and it lasted about average, but the only thing left to break down now is the engine, everything else has been replaced. In last year I've had a new transmission, wheel bearings, and now a starter.

Over the life of the car, I've only had to put on one set of CV boots (surprised by this fact, usually its like every two years), but everything else seems to have failed and been replaced, brakes, calipers, disks, fuel pump, O2 sensor, engine fan, compressor fan, water pump, fuel injectors, and a fuel filter.

Great ride! Love while it lasted, would make a great all-electric conversion, just too much body work needs to be done. It's been in 4 accidents, and the airbags deployed without killing us, so can't complain too much. It's safe, just don't spread your payments beyond 5 years. Gas millage was decent throughout it's life, averaged 300 miles on a tank of gas @ 10gallons, so 30/mpg. I did a lot of city driving, and some long haul trips. Changed oil religiously, no leaks, and always double-checked their work, never brought to Honda dealer, only my life long trusted mechanic.

almost 5 years old. only 31,000 miles . Stop at lake park and 20 minutes later enter car to leave but the ignition switch would not turn at all. Moved steering wheel while trying to turn ignition switch . It would not turn at all. It was locked up.

Next, I tried a newer ignition key. Still problem. Key would not turn to start. It would not move at all.

Finally, after 24 hours , Lock smith came out and removed ignition switch and repaired it with new items at the the lake. Cost $225. On calling honda dealer they were quoting $600.

It did not require new keys to be made. After the 75 minute repair, both ignition keys worked fine.

Lock smith showed how one of the pins in lock would not retract. He put in some new pins in the ignition switch to make the repair.

It took several calls to lock smiths to find one who was able to make the repair. This saved me a lot money rather than tow into the honda dealer.

I want to report this as solved even tho I still have to go back to dealer on Monday. Firestone found the paper work on this issue & after reading it I have to say I'm 99% sure this is it! Especially after reading complaints on here! Honda & Firestone both reported my starter, alternator & battery tested good! Several times 3 Firestone.&twice at Honda! I did warranty out the battery twice just to rule it out! It has to do with the anti theft system computer & the key chip communication. It is a rolling code on these years.I will report back after I solve this as work done & cost. My car randomly decides not to start in the morning or after 8 to 10 hours not driving or so it seemed. But only sporadically after I jump it once drive highway to work 10 miles it will start fine all day! So why do I think this is it!? Because of the rolling codes & the reported action item by Honda. Hmm. Something to think about. The key I've been using is a recoded key not from Honda but it usually works. I've been having the problem post key. I left my car sitting after one of these episodes of 3 jumps in a row. Now today Monday I went out. & used my original master key & it started right up. I will see how the rest of the week goes! Good luck non starting civics!

My dealer (Pickering Honda) is either stupid or trying to rip me off. They are not able to pin-point the problem and are charging me diagnostic fees right and left. They are telling me my battery is good but yet I have to change it.

After driving the car for a while and turning it off the car doesn't start again. In fact the car LOOSES all power. There is no dash light. The car doesn't lock or open with remote. And it doesn't click and radio LCD doesn't display anything. So, it's lost power totally. Only emergency lights work. A boost doesn't work as battery has been tested good and it's not battery issue.

I clean two ground wires from two sides of the engine and I clean the battery ground wire as well. I don't know where the ECU and transmission ground wires are. But I think they are the problem as they get corroded. I could be wrong with my theory but it's really idiotic that Honda Dealer can't find the problem for sure and wants me to change the battery while they confess it's all good.

As with others, my 2009 Honda Civic isn't sure it wants to start sometimes. The time between turning on and turning over is getting progressively longer and is becoming more frequent. It is not connected with weather or any other situations. . .it occurs very randomly. When I reported it to the dealer, they said they had never heard of it.

Does anyone have a solution yet?

This is a brand new car! There shouldn't be any problems starting! I change the oil when needed and all of the fluids are always kept up with.

Sometimes it takes a few seconds to actually start and it's not even cold outside.

The weirdest problem is when I turn the key and the car doesn't even try to start but the dash lights come on. It does start the 2nd go. I called the dealership and was told that they haven't heard that complaint yet. I'm going to have to bring it in.

my honda civic has intermittent hard starts. This is something that is unheard of with any other Honda products I've ever owned. Especially considering how few miles and how new the vehicle is. I'm very disappointed and was hoping others were not experiencing the same thing but apparently they are. I am going to schedule a visit at the dealer and keep everyone posted. Please do the same!

Civic EX, With Navigation 1.8L

I bought my 2009 Civic at the end of November of 2008 and I'm having a problem with it starting. I first took my car in at 319 miles, and now, today, at about 2000 miles. (Yes, I drive a lot.)

If the engine cranks at all, it takes MUCH longer than it should -- at least first thing in the morning. This is particularly bad when I've driven it some distance the day before. (To note: twice now it didn't crank at all, but the dash lights came on.) Throughout most of the day, it generally starts quickly, but I tend to think it cranks one too many times. I've taken it to one dealership. They are more than happy to help, but they have no idea what is wrong. They acknowledge the problem and they're putting in a NEW (albeit, refurbished) battery.
