It is very frustrating that everybody on this website is experiencing the same problem with the steering pumps (probably a clogged reservoir screen) and honda is not doing a recall on this issue. I am certainly going to call NTHSA on this. I personally know 8 people who own Honda Odyssey vans. And you aren't going to believe this, they ALL have the same problem, not to mention all of you on this blog. Step up honda and fix this problem at no charge to the consumer!

about once a year, I purchase a new can of Power Steering fluid. I suck the old out with a turkey baster and replace with new. It keeps it from goaning when making turns.

First Honda ever owned. After very first service at 7500 miles, brakes started squeaking every time we applied them. Researched and found that the 2005's have a brake problem (supposedly due to Honda switching to a new brake pad). Now at 44000 miles, power steering noise and the original Michelin tires are showing significant wear (for a 70000 mile tire). I wanted the Sienna, but my wife talked me into the Odyssey because she drives it the most. Should have gotten the Toyota.

Dealer first replaced the power steering reservoir that did not fix the problem. Then changed the power steering pump which fixed the problem. Dealer only charged me for the work on the reservoir. This dealer (Community Honda - Orland Park, IL. has done a great job in standing behind the quality problems with this model Odyssey.

I was hearing a whining noise from my car steering when it was relatively cold out after driving for 30 minutes or more. I came across this website and found some info on power steering pumps.

I have had the problem fixed and just wanted to post for others:

Its not the pump or the hoses. It is a defective power steering reservoir. I made them print out the TSB on it. It specifically states the symptoms as whining noise heard from steering after driving for 30 minutes when the temp is between 35-45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Diagnosis is to replace and flush the power steering fluid.

This was not covered under warranty for me. I only have power train at this time. It cost $18 for parts and $57 for labor. Not bad.

The dealer replaced the power steering fluid pump, reservoir and filter. I had it done because I was concerned the power steering system would fail while on the road. I understand this is not uncommon in the Odyssey and I'm worried that I'll have to foot a $600 replacement bill every 35000 miles.

Ditto on the PS pump problem. Warm vehicle+cold ambient temperature=grindy whinny noise. Going to take to dealer for flush and pump replacement. I may add an after market cooler but I don't know if operating temp is the problem. I am going to do some more research, but it sounds like the issue is with the reservoir.

Took car in for steering pump noise, dealer reported no problem found. Before traveling decided to look for myself. Major contamination in power steering fluid, back to dealer suggested replacing pump and flush per TSB. Since the first visit it was no longer covered under warranty. I replaced pump and flushed myself. Still much contamination, installed after market inline filter, still contamination. Changed all low pressure hoses, did not improve, replaced high pressure hose, flushed, replaced reservoir which has a screen filter and replaced inline filter again and finally success. If you replace a pump and never get rid of the contamination which was coming from the high pressure hose the second pump will not last, as many people are on the 3rd pump or more. Why are hoses not listed in the TSB? If I cannot rely on the dealer to fix a problem properly then why bother paying a premium for a Honda. I could have gotten a slightly used Dodge for half the price if I wanted to work on something.

Power steering began making noise when turning hard to the right or left in the driveway. Got progressively worse and began to make noise when making turns on routine errands. Thought fluid might be low, but it wasn't. Added some and it didn't help. After 2 complaints to dealer, Honda replaced the power steering pump even though we were outside the 36000 mile warranty. Kudos for them! But a few thousand miles later, it is beginning to make the same noise again on hard turns into the driveway. Took it back to dealer but this time they assure me this is "normal." I'm a bit skeptical based on my last experience and what others have said on this site and others. I just hope it doesn't break down on the road as this would be a major safety issue! I'm asking my dealer to log this in their service history so if it fails again or effects other systems I have some history of the problem with them and can prove I've done everything I was supposed to do. Honda's taken good care of me in the past so I trust they'll do the right thing should there be a problem in the future.

When I steer to the right or left after driving on the highway, I hear a loud noise from the under the hood. It comes and goes, so that it is really difficult to duplicate it in front of the dealership. I don't know what to do.

We have brought this junker back 6 times to have this fixed. Willis Dealership could not figure it out and claimed they could not hear it. Finally they replaced the steering pump, lines and fluids. Since then we went about 18k miles without an issue. Now it is happening all over again. After 5 Hondas - I'm done. Too bad, I previously loved the brand.

We have the same problem. Took it into the dealership a few times and as usual, they claim the noise never happened. It is so loud that you would think something is about to blow!! I can't believe we spent this money on something that sounds like a clunker. Very unhappy with the way Honda is dealing with this matter, it is not an isolated incident from the research I have found. Good idea to document this on video , thats exactly what I will do next time!!! thnx

Similar to other complaints listed. First power steering pump went at about 18,000 miles now same problem at 29,000 miles. It never does it at the dealer so I started to video the noise as well as the mileage to document this problem. Dealer replaced with no problem. What happens after warranty?
