Okay guys what is it with the steering pump noise...I have this growling noise with the same climate, and situations as posted but the dealer sees nothing wrong. Of course it stops making the noise when I pull up into the service bay! Should I get a video camera and tape it when it happens for proof? Also is there a TSB out yet on this problem? I can't afford any more repairs on this POS van. Thanks. Other problems brakes, excessive wear on tires, wind noise, and vibrations at lower speeds. Never Honda again.
We had been driving for about an hour at freeway speeds and when we got off the highway to turn left, I heard a lot of noise while turning and then it seemed to go away. I determined that it had to do wit the power steering. Thankful for the google search that found this website and confirmed our problem. By the way it was 41 degrees out. Seems to be that the car is warm and the outside temp is cold when this is happening to people.
We heard a groaning noise from the power steering when it was cool out and the car was warm. We made an appointment with JL Freed. The car was not making the noise, but they took us seriously and they replaced the pump, reservoir and lines. All under warranty :-) They had us in and out in an hour!
I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel at low speeds in December of 2007, they were intermittent. In March the PS pump starts whining intermittently and now we're having difficulty with turning the wheel when backing up. Obviously the pump is defective and I'm wondering if this had anything to do with the previous vibration at low speed when turning. I called the dealer today and of course they want to charge me for diagnosis and said I'm responsible for repair since it is out of warranty. Now that I've seen these complaints, I'm going back to look for free parts at the least. Honda should take care of this defect out to 100K miles at least, I have an Accord with 200K and the original pump! This is not expected to fail at 40K.

The power steering pump has been emitting low moans and groans since new, but Honda mechanics either couldn't hear or choose to ignore them. Returning from a trip south a few days ago, the pump really started howling and groaning, especially when turning the wheel at low speeds. After sitting two hours, taking the van out again, the noise was gone? Called Honda, explained the above, they had never heard of a power steering pump failure before, but when I mentioned it could be a safety problem during driving, suddenly he remembered a TSB on the issue and ordered/replaced the pump.
Moral of the story, if you can tie a safety concern to your problem, they need to act. (avoiding lawsuits or damages)
My problems have been the same as all the others except mine didn't start until 48,000 miles. After a 45 min. drive coming home from the lake, we stated to hear this jingling whining sound. Took it in the next morning to the dealer and of coarse the noise wasn't there! They said that without a noise they couldn't find a problem. A week later I just took it in and told them that there was a problem and for them to keep my car until they figured it out. They called back a few hours later to inform me that the power steering pump was out and would cost $600.00 to replace. I did some research and found that I wasn't the only one with this problem. It was also a problem with the 05's. They agreed to pay for the parts if I would pay labor which comes up to $220.00. I worry now that the second one will go out!!! I pick it up this afternoon and plan to ask for some kind of warranty.
noise started at about 28,000 miles and when I brought car into dealership, they changed pump and power steering fluid without charge. It was still under warranty. Definitely upsetting, I expected better from Honda. I owned a Civic "91, which was incredibly reliable for the 15 years I drove it.
Noise started after driving a few hundred miles overnight for our vacation. No oil leaks, so I kept going. Noise went away a few hours later. Noise since returned this month (November). Noise went away when my wife took it to dealer. Dealer quoted $500 to replace.
Second time that the power steering pump went on the car. Without warning, the pump started to make significant noise around a mile from the house. We were able to drive to the dealership to drop off the vehicle and they repaired it under warranty at no cost and paid for our 24-hour car rental through them.
I am very concerned that this is the 2nd time we have had to have a pump replaced in the first 30k miles. I am concerned because (1) I don't want to have to pay or fight to not pay for another pump when our warranty expires and (2) I don't want to be stuck far from home or on a highway when the pump might fail again without warning.
Added note: A family member who purchased a 2006 Odyssey EX has also needed to have 2 pumps replaced in the first 25k miles.
We had to take the car in twice to get the dealer to acknowledge the noise. The dealer never actually admitted to hearing the noise - even though we were standing right there hearing the racket. He said he had never heard of the problem (apparently he has a hearing problem!). Well there is a bulletin out on the issue. Anyhow they put a new power steering pump in.
Just like everyone else before me, the Power Steering Pump was replaced under warranty, as I took the car in because of this annoying noise after returning from a 2 hour trip. The cause for concern is there since the loss of power steering at a high speed will cause you lose control of the car for a period of time! Hence Danger! if you hear the noise take the car in immediately, because of a safety issue. Honda is responsible for this cost and they will also provide you with a loner or rent a car for you at their expense. No Inconvenience to you.
The explanation I recieved was that Honda installed incorrect fluid in the cas at assembly and it was starting to break down. I think it's a bogus explaination. With 23000 miles it's starting up again. Will have it back in the shop this week to address this issue and a new vibration that has come up after a trip this weekend.
DEALER REPLACED THE POWER STEERING PUMP UNDER WARRANTY SO THERE WAS NO COST INVOLVED. DEALER TOLD ME THAT THERE IS AN "ALERT" ABOUT THIS. INFORMED HIM THAT I WAS SIGNED UP FOR INFO TO BE EMAILED TO ME ON HONDA.COM AND WAS UNAWARE OF THE ALERT. SO, APPARENTLY THEY DON'T WANT TO ADVERTISE THE PROBLEM BUT WILL FIX IT IF YOU GO AND COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!
After running the car back from a trip, we heard a loud whining noise after comming to a stop. The weather had gotten cold, and the noise seemed to go away on acceleration, only to come back again. I got louder upon turning. However, is has not happened since. I am taking the car to the dealer to have it checked out this week.
Just like the previous guy, the power steering has started to make a whining noise, especially after several miles at freeway speed. It's intermittent, and doesn't make much if any noise at idle. The power steering fluid is full, and appears to be foaming. It sounds awful, but there seems to be no effect on the steering effort, just the noise.
Pump was replaced under warranty but new pump is starting to do same thing. Pump does not make noise all the time. Could not get to make noise at dealer. Dealer checked but everything seems ok. Problem is intermitent but is annoying. Vehicle has about 9000 miles on it now but has been making noise about 2000 miles after new pump put in. Will not make noise all the time but I'm concerned someday I will have to pay for new pump.
