The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact noticed that when the steering pump became hot the wheel made a loud winding noise similar to a siren, causing the front end of the vehicle to lunge forward. The dealer was notified and advised the contact that it was normal and there were no recalls. The contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 52,000. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.

Steering wheel in Honda Odyssey 2006 malfunction. Steering wheel locks and gets very tight at low speeds and cause van to get stuck in a position and one has to turn the wheel real hard or accelerate to change position. Especially difficult when maneuvering the van in parking lots or making sharp turns at traffic lights. At low speeds the power steering pump does not pump enough fluid according to dealer. The failure occurs always a low speeds and it leads to steering wheel getting stuck or becoming very tight to turn thereby causing the car to get stuck in one place. I reported the problem to Honda and said this is manufacturing defect and a huge safety issue which needs to be addressed. All they did was state it is a manufacturing defect. I almost could not turn at the traffic signal and could have got hit by the car behind me a few days back and also could not turn into a street in traffic and almost got hit by another car behind me since I could not move. Honda usa tells its consumers that they do not cover manufacturing defects leading to safety issues if vehicle is out of warranty. Soon enough this is going to lead to a lot of steering issues and you can check the web with the search term "Honda Odyssey 2006 steering issues" and you will find many incidents as related to the power steering pump. Steering is the crucial part of any vehicle and such callousness on part of Honda definitely calls for a investigation before we see a lot of accidents due a steering wheel getting stuck. The dealers diagnosis after check up was to replace the steering pump so that the pump will push enough fluid at low speeds and not cause the steering wheel to get stuck. There is a potential that this can also occur at high speeds but for me it happens a low speeds. Honda also does not allow consumers to talk to senior persons for resolution and stated consumer has reached end of line once it hits their phone system.

Power steering assist fails when turning quickly (ie: Low speed, turning into parking slot). Most noticeable when engine is warm. Vehicle is 2006 Honda Odyssey exl minivan with approx 70K miles. Honda dealer has replaced the power steering pump 3X with no explanation for the failure other than poor design. Latest replacement performed 10/22/10.

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact was driving 20 mph and attempting a left turn when the steering wheel became abnormally resistant. Two days prior to the failure, the ESC warning light had illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where the steering rack bolts were replaced. The dealer advised that the steering bolts had fractured from the vehicle. The current and failure mileage was 118,000.

Loss of power steering at low speeds especially when trying to park. Was intermittent and progressed over two weeks. Brought to independent mechanic told nothing wrong with power steering fluid or components. One week later brought to Honda dealer told needs new power steering pump -car has 85,000 km. The pump should not give out so soon. $700 repair. Asked about technical bulletins about power steering and mechanic said it only concerns the reservoir and that is not my issue. Will have to have it fixed but feel there is a known problem and I should not bear all the cost.

Power steering failure. Began during colder weather with whining noise from power steering when weather below 40 F. this occurred two years in a row. Currently at slow speeds < 30 steering input is more difficult and requires much more effort to strain against the steering wheel. Honda was contacted first year of whining and stated problem was due to cold weather. Since then I have learned that three service bulletins have been distributed for same complaint. Honda tsb 07-005 dated 01/26/07 then replaced by tsb 07-005 dated 06/17/08 then tsb 07-005 dated 08/21/09. This was a known complaint during my initial questions and now problem has gotten much worse. Now I am being told vehicle is out of basic warranty and they will not cover under powertrain warranty. The tsb state directly on the Honda bulletin this is caused by a defective power steering pump reservoir. My concern is the possibility at higher speed loosing steering input or control.

Driving car and the steering started to whine and screech very loudly. Turned wheel in both directions and noise continued. Shut car off and started again and the noise continued. Went online and found out that a lot of 06' models have issues with the steering reservoir design choking the steering motor. Called the dealership, 50K on my van, and described the problem. The service tech new immediately what is was and suggested I replace the steering reservoir so has not damage the motor further at it was a $700 fix vs $85. Asked how come this was not under recall as the reservoir had three (3) tech bulletins issued and 3 redesigns to solve the steering problem. Said tech bulletins don't mean recalls and I was over the 36K warranty so I was on my own. I paid for the repair and the noise stopped.

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mpd, the power steering failed and he heard a screeching and winding noise. He took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that the power steering pump failed and needed to be replaced. Furthermore, he also noticed that when driving down hill and trying to apply the brakes, the steering wheel would shake violently. He took the vehicle to the dealership and the dealer told him that the rotors were warped and there was nothing they could do. He had not called the manufacturer to-date. The power steering pump was being repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 41,000. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

2006 Honda Odyssey - power steering pump. The power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums and intermittently becomes very hard to steer. Mechanic said power steering pump was defective and has seen this many times on 2005-07 Odyssey. Local Honda dealer confirmed that this was a common problem, but that Honda had not issued a recall.

Power steering pump failing. Nothing leads up to this, just the power steering stops working. The issue is mainly at low speeds and when trying to park - the power steering just stops working. We needed to have the power steering pump replaced and new fluid added. When taken to mechanic, told many customers have same issue as well as well documented complaints all over the internet.

I own a 2006 Honda Odyssey minivan, with almost 70,000 miles on it. I brought the car in last week for service regarding a "moaning" noise when turning the steering wheel, right or left. The technician later informed me that the power steering pump and its components are no longer working and needed to be replaced... $700 dollars later. After getting the parts replaced because of this pump going bad, I checked online and discovered this is a known issue and has been reported previously. I contacted Honda North America, who informed me that the given life span of this part is approx 120-140 miles, and that would prorate me back 50% the cost of my service charge. This was very nice and I am awaiting the check in the mail. My issue is that if there is a know issue with this part, and it "goes" out at various mileage on these vehicles, it would be have been more appropriate to have the part recalled and replaced all together. Am sure most people don't bring their cars in at the first instance they hear a noise, etc. Since I have children and car pool others, I never take any chances with my car. It would be very disturbing if the car loss its power steering at a time when its was most needed, as to avoid a serious accident. Thank you for your time.

Consistent loss of steering at slow speeds. Only when accelerating will steering work, almost as if at idle or in parking lots, not enough power to steering unit transpires. It generally requires several additional moves in a parking lot to get out of a space, but somewhat dangerous in that you have to allow for car to roll, in order for steering to work. The most dangerous situation is when you're coming to a stop and when you reach 10mph or so, on the way to a stop, you don't have steering for those few seconds. It's dangerous in a parking lot if you have to turn suddenly. This has happened consistently since we've owned the vehicle, everyone I know here at the office, friends and family who own one, have complained of the same problem. A related issue is, with increasing frequency, the power steering unit emits a hissing sound, almost as if the belts are about to snap, similar to the noise american power steering unis made in the 80's and 90's. I believe the unit is not engineered properly for the vehicle. Both of these have been persistent problems, shame on me for not reporting it sooner, perhaps it's the aura of Honda that makes one believe they're perfect vehicles. They are far from it.
