CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

Went to Hyundai dealership in June and car had 42,000 miles on it. Spent $950.00 on front brakes, four tires, wheel alignment, oil change.

Was told rear brakes were at 5 mm.

Went to Palm Desert heard a loud rubbing sound and had it checked it. Only 1500 miles later needed rear brakes at 1.5 mm. They should not have gone out that fast.

Hyundai and dealership tell me that since they are brakes they are not warrantied and because I went to a regular shop they do not believe me. Well, after the rear brakes were fixed there was no more noise.

Waiting on response from Hyundai to see if I went to another Hyundai dealer and not a regular shop if that would have made a difference.

brake failure

My son was driving home from meeting friends at IHOP about 1 mile from our home. On his way home he went to turn into our development and the brakes made a loud grinding noise and didn't work at all. His friend was behind him in his car and heard the noise and saw him not stopping. He tried to make the turn into the development and because he didn't slow down (he was going approx 35 mph) he ran into the large brick entrance sign and fence. The front airbag deployed and he was able to walk away. He broke his hand and was of course completely shaken up. The noise woke a neighbor who happened to be a police man. He came running over and spoke with my son until my husband and I arrived. He could see my son was completely upset and totally straight in terms of any drugs or alcohol. The on-duty police arrived and also assessed the situation as the same. He said he believed my son from what he could see and wrote the police report as such. The brakes failed and he didn't issue my son a ticket of any kind. I took him to the ER and they put a splint on his hand.

His car was totaled. I have reached out to Hyundai and they assigned a case number to us. Within 6-8 weeks they will let me know if they will send someone out to inspect the car to see if the brakes were the reason for the accident. As of now my insurance company has it down as my son's fault unless they see proof it was otherwise.

I am so grateful he wasn't injured worse, but I am so angry that it happened in the first place. I will not let this go. There are too many other incidents of brake failure and something should be done.

As my daughter, on way home from work, approached a country "T" intersection, she pressed the brake pedal and NOTHING HAPPENED. Car went thru the intersection, crossed a farmyard, went length of a football field, and was stopped by plowing into a dirt pile. She'd pulled emergency brake, which slowed her down and caused skid, but it didn't stop the car. She swears she did not step on gas pedal by mistake. After car was towed to a dealer, the brakes appeared to work. She'd already had repairs done to brakes (a month or so ago) that seem to be in line with this month's brake-stopper pad recall, but dealer said that shouldn't have caused total failure. No injuries this time, just front end damage, but this could have easily been a fatal crash.
