problem #6

Mar 172021

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

This is costing us $75 per month in oil costs, not counting having to replace the oil filter every 3 months.

We had the "oil consumption test" at the recommendation of the dealership service department... with 1000 miles between each check... only to be told yes, it needs the motor replaced, but now has too many miles and is too old to be covered under any warranty.

If we had known anything about this issue before we would never have even bought the damn car. The replacement engine and labor was more than we even paid for the damn vehicle!!!

We feel we need a replacement vehicle for our trouble, but I doubt that will ever happen. It will be the last damn Hyundai we EVER own.

At the very least we should be provided a loaner vehicle for minimal rental costs and Hyundai should replace the engine and service the whole vehicle at no cost to us.

Sonata SE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 85,000 miles

My 2016 Sonata SE with 85,000 miles uses 1.8 qts of oil per 1,000 miles. I was told there is no fix and this is normal for this car. It never used any oil before 81,000 miles.

Sonata 2.4L V4

I bought my car from a Hertz dealership as the second owner with only 74,000 miles on my vehicle. I started bringing it to the Centereach Hyundai dealership to do all of my service because I had another vehicle from them previously and they always serviced my vehicle. I started burning oil not even a month after buying the vehicle and they told me I needed to do an oil consumption test. I have done seven oil consumption tests for them to tell me that I’m not covered as the second owner only gets the first 60,000 miles on the car.

I called manufacturing and manufacturing had me bring it to Huntington Hyundai. And they told me the same thing. And then when I called manufacturing back after all that work, they told me the same thing. What I don’t get is why have me do an oil consumption test over and over and over again I’d have to continue buying oil in between tests while waiting for answers only to be placed running around and told no. This recall was issued back in 2016 when the vehicle was first created and put on the market. Same thing with the Kias. If I had known Hyundai was not going to do right by their customers, I would not have bought another Hyundai. I have done nothing but take care of my vehicle since I’ve gotten it and have replaced anything that’s needed to be replaced immediately instead of waiting.

Sonata SE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

Car consumes about 1 quart of engine oil per 1k miles. It's a lot! I tried a different brand and nothing helped. Next thing will be using the next higher weight of oil and hopefully the higher viscosity helps a bit.

Sonata SE 2.4L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,879 miles

I began noticing a problem with excessive oil consumption in January of 2021 - the mileage was around 78,000 miles. I now have 90,000 on it. I also have an extended warranty offered through the dealership. I have been bringing it in every 1,000 miles for an engine consumption test. Until this year I was told that the required amount of oil consumption tests to be performed was 4 tests at 1,000 miles each. They recently changed it to 6 tests this year and now as of today I was told could be every two weeks for a total of 6 months! The bar keeps moving higher and higher.

I have been bringing it in now every month for 6 consecutive months for the testing. It is always down 3 quarts or more when I bring it in at each 1000 mile interval. The oil is usually below the L on the oil stick or worse. On the last test a month or so ago, I was told that they think there is a leak. Apparently, they didn't fix it as it leaked all over my driveway immediately following. In fact my neighbor mentioned it to me this week! When I brought it in once again today, they stated that they found a tear in the filter which was causing the leak! Strange that after all the oil consumption testing, a compression test and PC valve replacement, they decided it was a tear in the filter. Wouldn't that have been a no brainer to check it in the beginning of this problem?

They have to go through 6 months and countless procedures to find a tear in the filter? Hmmmm! Seems that they are looking for every possible excuse to wiggle out of replacing my engine. I am the original owner with all of my oil receipts which they submitted but denied replacement! This is a big hassle and a waste of time every month to bring it in and wait around a few hours each month for service! I asked the service advisor who should cover this if they were to replace the engine and was told it depends on the cause whether it would be under my Hyundai or the extended warranty company I purchased through them. What is even more frustrating is that there are many forums with the same model and the same exact problem, even the same amount of oil consumption at the 1,000 mile mark, yet many of them have already or are getting engine replacements!

Lost for words. Bought the car and didn’t think it would mess up so fast - it’s my first Hyundai but my last unfortunately. The vehicle is unreliable.
