Cherokee Latitude 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,422 miles

With only 74,322 miles, I never thought I'd have oil issues till the 'oil pressure low message' came on. I was confused because the 'Change oil reminder' message was never on and I knew it wasn't due for another couple of hundred miles. This was on Saturday morning while starting it to run errands... instantly my speed dropped even though I had my foot on the gas. The nearest place to take it was Firestone but they were swamped and would not be able to look at it till today (Tuesday). They suggested checking the oil and adding 2 or 3 quarts until then and not driving anymore than necessary. Upon returning home and adding the oil, the problem went away.

Today I went back to Firestone and it was found to be a leak from the oil cooler. Because the mileage was below 100,000 miles (74,322) they quoted a price of $700.00 but suggested I take it to the dealership since they thought it would be covered under warranty... Wrong! Warranty is 5 yrs/100,000... and the 5 years ran out the end of July. Luckily I remembered purchasing extended warranty coverage, but even though I had my contract info as well as the booklet stating what was covered, they would not call the CostGuard company to see if the oil issue was covered. Their reason was they couldn't go by the inspection report I had from Firestone.

Miffed as I was at that point, I made the call and after the usual 'press 1, 2, 3, etc. depending on who you think you should talk to, and after having to speak to 3 different people, I was able to find out if was covered BUT this contract/warranty is for 72 months or 75,000 miles and I needed to get it done now before it runs out. Dealership has the Jeep and say they will try to have it done by the weekend... but my past experience tells me otherwise which is why I stopped going there. They say they need to have their mechanic check it and will call me with what they find.

Wish I had never thought I needed this Jeep when they came out!!!

Cherokee Sport 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,012 miles

My car's oil consumption is through the roof. It would completely die randomly within minutes after startup due to the oil pump sucking in so much oil that it triggered the low-oil sensor to kill the engine to preserve it. I didn't know that this was the issue until googling around and seeing that maybe it was low oil. So I waited until the engine was cold and checked the oil. It barely even registered on the dipstick. Only the bottom quarter-inch of the dipstick was coated in oil. I thought that this was impossible so I cleaned it and stuck it back in for a second check. Sure enough, there was just about nothing left.

I immediately brought it to the dealership where they started an oil consumption test. After driving it for 1k miles, they measured oil consumption to be at 1.5 quarts loss. They then stated that they needed to see it on a 2k mile scale so instead of just taking that loss and multiplying it by 2. So I drove another 1000 miles and I'm currently waiting to hear the verdict. If the TigerShark engine does in fact consume too much oil - as is obvious by previous testing - the dealership has said that they would either rebuild the engine or more likely, replace the engine all-together. This still falls under the basic powertrain warranty as I brought the car in at 47K miles - under the 50k threshold.

Update from Nov 29, 2021: software update (recall) fixed this, and they replaced the engine. no issues so far

Cherokee Latitude 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission

READ THIS BEFORE BUYING THIS CAR!!

My engine started burning oil at around 40,000 miles (that I could notice). It burned so much in between oil changes that the engine SHUT DOWN in the middle of the road with NO WARNING. It had consumed all the oil to empty in about 6000 miles. I took it to the dealer who recommended to Chrysler that the engine be replaced. Chrysler responded that it did not approve the procedure because "WE HAVE NO REASON TO CHANGE. NEEDS TO BE AT 1000 MILES PER QUART" this quote is from the reports I received with my invoice. In conclusion, they did nothing because per Chrysler, THEIR ENGINES ARE OK IF THEY CONSUME UP TO 1 QUART OF OIL FOR EVERY 1000 MILES. This means I have to add up to 6 quarts of oil in between oil changes. Per the dealer recommendation, I should keep oil in my car and check the oil every time I add gas. Is this normal for a 3-year old, 50,000 mile car??? I would recommend to stay away unless you are willing to take the risk on the engine.

Cherokee 2.0L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,000 miles

So I've been reading that this is a problem with the particular Jeep and even the dealer admits it and can do nothing for me. I've had the Jeep go bone dry and shut down after 5k miles on multiple occasions prior to realizing this was an ongoing issue. This time I had the oil changed 3200 miles ago and the engine seized this morning. If this happened on the highway I could see it resulting in injury or death. The manufacturer does nothing, the dealer (Lester Glenn Jeep, Toms River, NJ) does nothing. I'm told for them to do anything it has to meet lower then whatever the standard were for a vehicle to burn which was something like a quart per 1k miles. This time around it did and I imagine it's not going to be improving. Don't buy this year Jeep and I think 2015 has the same problems.

Cherokee 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

I had issues with This Jeep Cherokee since i bought it brand new. Transmission, they already replaced the engine when it had about 12000 miles. Now i found out the engine consumes 0.5 quarter of oil every 1000 mikes and you either had to add oil or the engine would not mske it to the an oil change after 5000 miles. Do not mention if you want to wait until the recommended 10k miles interval max between oil changes.
