CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012 Grand Cherokee hasn't seen the same complaint volume as the 2011, at least not yet.

It's worth noting both model years are part of a class-action lawsuit that focuses on a defective TIPM and a long wait for replacement parts.

The 2012 also received national attention after it failed a Swedish Magazine's "moose test". The test measures a vehicle's ability to swerve out of the way of an obstacle you wouldn't want to hit while driving down the road ... like a moose.

I understand there was a recall on the alternators of the 2012 Jeep Grand 2012, mine was replaced recently after the 96000 service. The car has recently started giving problem with hard start, I had to leave it at work due to this inconvenience. The vehicle would not start today.

Had the fuel pump relay recall done last year. Still having the same issue the recall was for. The vehicle stalls occasionally as I am coming to a light. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership twice, the first time they said they could not diagnose the second time they had it for three days and said BOTH fuel pumps are to be replaced at a cost of $1500.

This problem was happening once a day or every other day. After being diagnosed as the fuel pumps the issue stopped happening as often and now happens only weekly. Now i am suffering from the vehicle not starting occasionally and you have to let it sit for 10min before it will start.

I asked, "Occasionally, when coming to a light BOTH fuel pumps stop working at the SAME time?" The answer was yes. Since doing my research I have found the fuel pumps are supposed to be warrantied for 7/70000.

My car continually would not start a year ago. I was able to get a recall / fix 1 year ago, months before actually receiving the recall but only after reaching out to Jeep directly and having them work with my local dealer. The fuel pump problem was apparently fixed, but since my jeep continues to not always start. I took my jeep in less than 2 months ago for the same problem, and it was again not fixed. I've left several messages for my service advocate and emailed the supervisor too, but I've had no return messages.

Grand Cherokee Laredo V6

I purchased my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee in July 2015. Two weeks later, I couldn't get the thing started. It sounded like it was trying to start, but nothing worked. I could hear a noise coming from behind the rear driver side tire, which sounded like air or gas was leaking. I had to call road side assistance to come tow it to the dealership, but the driver of the tow truck said it could be just the battery. He jump-started it and it worked. I drove it to the store and back home with no problems. The vehicle started later that day.

I drove it to dinner and back home, but that's when I heard that noise coming from the rear side again once it was parked in my garage. I looked up the problem online and discovered that it had a recall since April 2015, for the fuel pump relay and that the fuel pump would sometimes shut off while driving, or it would stay on after the vehicle was turned off..

The next day, I called the dealership, they scheduled me in for a month later (august 18th) and said that Chrysler has not issued the Fuel Pump Relay to the dealerships yet, but they would notify me when it arrived. I was never notified. I called a week before my appt. and found out they already had plenty of the necessary part in stock.

I took it on on my scheduled date, but the next day they called me to tell me the Recall was taken care of, but the battery was not holding a charge. I knew it was related to the recall, but they said it didn't sound familiar. They claimed that the only safety hazard related to the recall was that it could intermittently shut off while driving. I explained that that had happened twice, but that the fuel pump would also stay on after the vehicle was turned off on several occasions.

They did not want to replace my battery as well, even though it was being drained due to the Recall. I finally called Chrysler (1-800-992-1997) and explained my situation to them. I spoke to someone named Linda, who didn't think it was related to the recall either, but after I told her she could look it up online if she wanted and consistently told her that the fuel pump stayed on so many times that it drained my battery to death, she finally agreed to REIMBURSE me for a new battery ($200 worth) after I paid for it on my own. And it could take up to 60 days for me to get my money back. SO frustrated!

Wouldn't start - found YouTube clips of other JGC doing the same thing cranking but no ignition.

Australia Jeeps answer is that there's an outstanding recall but no idea when parts will be available. Tried to tell me it might be other problems and that will be a cost not covered by the recall. Ive watched the YouTube videos and read descriptions it's the same thing. I'm not spending money on other parts Jeep convince me I need to replace here.

They also say they haven't heard of any cars having the problem in Australia but the Internet has lots of reports of the problem.

Grand Cherokee LImited 3.6L

The vehicle started fine but when going back into reverse to back out of the garage the Jeep stalled. I attempted to push the start/stop button; however the engine kept cranking to try to start the engine. I attempted to push the start/stop button to shut off the vehicle but it remained engaged and continued cranking. Starter motor finally disengaged after pushing the start/stop button multiple times. The vehicle did not even have 20,000 miles on it.

Grand Cherokee LImited 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,294 miles

3/28/2015 (20,924 miles): This is the second time my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee has stalled when I put it in reverse after starting. I started the Jeep and put it in reverse and I began to back out of a parking space and it stalled. However, when I looked at the display showed that the Jeep was in Park, however the shift lever was still in Reverse, and the radio was still on like the car electronics were on.

I moved the shift lever back into Park. I pushed the start/stop button but I could not get the vehicle instruments or radio to shut off. I tried several attempts to start the vehicle, however it just clicked once and the starter did not engage. While my foot was on the brake, I put the gear shift in reverse and then back into Park. I again tried to push the start/stop button and this time it just kept cranking but failed to start.

The vehicle started to roll while the dash displayed P and I was in a level parking lot. When I stepped on the brakes they were hard to press.

I used my phone to call Moss Bros Service and they transferred me to the Moss Motors Riverside, CA Service Center. I explained my situation but all service advisers were busy. I waited on the line for over 11 minutes and someone came back on the line and told me that someone would call me back. See call log from phone records below. I explained to the operator that if I could not get the vehicle to turn off that the battery would eventually go dead. After waiting on hold all this time I attempted to push the start/stop button one more time and this time all controls seem to shut off. I pushed the start/stop button again and the vehicle did start this time.

Took into the dealer and they cannot fix the issue unless it happens when they have it. They said there has not been a recall for 2012 models only 2011. Called Chrysler and they say that 2012's are not part of the TIPM recall, however, I am having the same issue as a 2011 model.

Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.2L V6

Absolute PAIN IN THE ASS this whole fiasco was for me! The damn thing has been in the shop for over a month now and the finish day keeps being pushed back due to MORE PROBLEMS being discovered or existing problems turning out to be MORE COMPLICATED than initially anticipated. Before the purchase I had been warned by my mechanic mate about the myriad of problems his other clients have had with the Grand Cherokee but I didn't listen, hoping I'd strike lucky and score a "rare gem". Surprise surprise luck was not on my side.

I bought a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee model last August 2014 from a 2nd owner who had only owned it for about 12 months. He cited the reason as "needing urgent cash for his business" for selling the car below market value, now I realize the REAL reason is "needing to get rid of this disaster on 4 wheels before it sucks all the cash out of his business!" Bought it at 45,000 KM, put another 10,000 KM on it within 6 months before the car started having issues:

ISSUE #1

The problem: The car would turn on and off intermittently and eventually would not turn on at all. At first, I though it was a battery issue with the key as the light kept illuminating so I changed the battery of the key. Problem persisted. I brought it into the shop for my mechanic mate to have a look at and after the inspection he concluded that the problem was with the fuel pump!

The solution: replacing the fuel pump

The cost: $1600 (part) + $400 (labor) = $2000

The time: 3 weeks turn around

ISSUE #2

The problem: Once the new fuel pump was installed, the Jeep started turning on and running as normal again...for a day! THEN the original problem came back - the damn thing would turn on and off intermittently. After doing another extensive inspection and growing countless white hair, my mechanic mate discovered the problem on top of the original problem: it wasn't the fuel pump, it was the defective TIPMS which caused the fuel pump to malfunction! F*cking fantastic, so now not only do I have to fork out MORE cash to fix the new problem, I just wasted $2K on fixing something that might not have been really problematic at all!

The solution: replacing the TIPMS

The cost: $1500 (part) + $300 (labor) = $1800

The time: 2 weeks turn around

BOTTOM LINE: $3800 and more than a month later I am STILL without my jeep. After this fiasco, the Grand Cherokee is going to be my first and my last Jeep purchase for the rest of my life.

Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6L V6

I had problems starting my car and was told by my mechanic it may be due to bad gas or the very cold weather. The problem was intermittent and started on January 5 2015 with 35,548 miles. After six weeks the problem is still ongoing. A light now comes on when the car when trying to start, which is the TIPM (per the mechanic). I now have 37322 miles

Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7L V8

The fuel pump relay went out and is an integrated part to the TIPM and not serviceable by most people. Luckily for me, I was not driving or stranded somewhere, just couldn't get to work that day. Dealer wants to replace the TIPM for $1100 and since the faulty part is still a part of the new TIPM, it could happen all over again. I built a cheap work around and I'm holding out for a recall by Chrysler. I'm only annoyed that Chrysler has not issued a recall already as this is a very common problem to their family of vehicles.
