I have a 2008 Jeep Liberty that will not shut off the gas valve when I am pumping gas. I previously had a 2005 Jeep Liberty that had the same problem. I feel this is a safety issue since gas drips down the side of the car, tire and eventually on the person pumping gas creating a very large puddle of gas that requires cleanup from the gas attendant. This has happened with 2 different styles of Jeep at various gas stations.

The gas tank overflows every time fuel is pumped into the vehicle. This happens at all gas stations and regardless of how slowly the tank is filled. The problem started seemingly out of the blue with no accidents or damage to the car prior. Gas sprays out of the filler tube as soon as the pump is removed, getting the person wet if they do not know to stand aside. Gas also runs down the side of the vehicle. This is both a safety issue and an environmental / emissions issue that should be addressed by Jeep. The interior smells of gas for a couple of hours after each overflow incident. We took it in for service and they said the entire gas tank would have to be replaced to fix the valve that has failed. We are out of warranty and feel this should be a safety recall and/or emissions warranty covered item. After looking online for solutions to the problem I have discovered that it is endemic to many Jeep Liberty and Jeep Wrangler vehicles made over the past several years. Jeep has only offered to fix the problem for Wrangler from 2007-08.

When putting fuel in the tank, it will burp out the fill line just as the pump is clicking off. Cannot fill the tank without this happening and it occurs every time we fuel up. This problem started about 9 months ago and we have less than 40,000 miles on it now. No event led up to this starting, it just started when trying to fuel up. No matter how I try to fuel up, I get slosh back. This an environmental hazard besides the filling stations do not like having gasoline spilled in their stations. It is a 2008 Jeep Liberty 4X4. I had the car at brown Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep today and they checked out the gas tank and could not find anything wrong. They did a thorough check and could not determine what was causing the problem. Putting gasoline into my 2008 Jeep Liberty, the gas pump shuts off as expected however gasoline spews out of the Jeep's filling system. Tried different pumps same results, this occurs without "topping off the tank". this I a serious safety hazard with gas being spilled on my clothing, shoes, hands, vehicle and ground. Once this happens the interior of the vehicle smells like gas causing headaches and breathing problems. I am just waiting for someone to cause a spark at the gas pump to ignite me. I have seen numerous complaints on various internet forums stating the same issues, this tells me that this is a real problem that Jeep has not addressed.

While filling up my 2008 Jeep Liberty the gas pump shut off automatically as it should have, but a large amount of gas spit out of the gas tank fill tube all over the ground and vehicle. This is the second time in a row that this has happened with this vehicle. It seems to be an issue with the tank venting. Vehicle has only 19,254 miles on it.

Every time the gas tank is being filled there is an eruption of fuel that comes out of the gas tank fill when the gas pump handle shuts off. Even when manually holding the gas pump handle dispensing gas at a very slow rate, the gas tank fill still pours out gas when it reaches the full point and shuts off the pump.

At around the 74,000 mile marker, my gas tank began spewing out gasoline upon filling up at the gas station. The tank holds roughly 17.5 gallons, and the nozzle (up to this point) would always automatically shut off upon a full tank when at the pump. Now, when the tank is nearing full, the fuel spills out of the gas tank, leaking gasoline all over the side of the vehicle, on my hands, shoes, clothes and ground. The only way to try and avoid this issue is to estimate a cut-off point in which to stop pumping fuel at around the 17.0 gallon mark, which is still very hard to do without the spillage occurring and often leaves me with a partial fillup to avoid getting soaked in gasoline. As of 4 days ago, my gascap and check engine indicator lights came on. I've fully refueled 3 times since then and tightened the gas cap and the lights have not disappeared. I often suffer headaches from the gasoline fumes that I carry back into the vehicle on my hands, clothes and feet from the gas spillage that occurs when I fill up. This problem seems to be very common amongst Jeep owners based on the amount of forums I've found online.

When filling the fuel tank with gas, at the full point the tank shoot back about a quarter gallon of gas onto the ground and on the side of the car. This is without topping the tank off, as it happens at the point that the gas pump automatically shuts off. There is an extreme danger of this with gasoline being all over.

Every time I fuel my 2008 Jeep Liberty the fuel nozzle does not shut off properly when full, causing fuel to spew out onto the car, my hands, my clothing and the concrete beneath the car at the gas station. I complained to the dealer while the vehicle was under warranty on 3/9/2010 and they replaced the filler tube. The repair did not fix the problem. I have been living with this issue for a year now. Today, while at the gas station, the person in the isle next to me, driving a 2008, 4-door Jeep Wrangler, had the same issue. I asked her about it and she said the problem had just begun for her in the past month, but it now happens to her every fuel up. I decided I would look into it further. After seeing the multiple online posts, I decided to make a complaint, as this is obvioiusly a defect with Jeep vehicles.

Fuel spill during refueling. While refueling the car, when the tank was almost full, fuel started to spill resulting in spraying the car and the ground within 3 feet radius with gas. This creates a risk of fire and health hazards by spilling gas onto skin. Chrysler/Jeep is aware of the problem and they have a tsb for this problem but refuse to make a recall. They are also aware of the problem on this particular vehicle and the vehicle was at the dealer service center 3 times for this particular problem but so far they have failed to fix the issue.

The fuel spills out of the tank when fueling the car resulting in gas on the vehicle and ground of the gas station. This has been going on for about two months. I have taken it to the dealer who said it needed a fuel vapor filter replaced. This did not fix the problem and now the dealer states I need a new gas tank. Since this is a non-maintainable part I feel it is a mfr. Defect and a very unsafe one at that.

While filling my Jeep with gasoline the pump is never triggered to shutoff and it causes a lot of fuel spilling all over me, the car and the ground. Prompting me to quickly clean myself and the car. This is an extremely dangerous situation not only due to its flammability but also its potential carcinogenic effects.

Every time I fill up my gas tank the nozzle does not trigger to release the shut off on the gas coming back out of the input which results in a lot of gas overflowing back onto my vehicle, the ground and my clothes. This happens even if I watch the amount of gallons being put into the tank and try and shut it off ahead of time.

We just bought a 2008 Jeep Liberty with 25000 miles on it and everytime we fill up it spews gas. I have tried putting the gas nozzle in farther, out half way, filling it up slowly but still everytime the nozzle clicks about a second or two later gas spews from the tank.

I have discussed this with other Jeep Liberty owners and have gone on line and have seen this to be a complaint of many. I also called Jeep and filed a complaint with them directly. They say there is no recall for this type of thing happening. This can't be very safe having a quarter of a gallon of gas shooting out every time you fill up the tank. Please help.

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. While parked and fueling the vehicle, the fuel tank overflowed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician stated the fuel tank did not have anything to make the fuel stop. The manufacturer stated that the dealer said that there was no problem so they could not assist. The failure occurred three times. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000.
