The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that when attempting to refuel the vehicle, the fuel would spew back out onto the ground. The dealer made two attempts to duplicate the failure but to no avail. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who performed a diagnostic test and concluded that the fuel tank would need to be replaced. The parts needed were not readily available and the contact was awaiting the arrival of the parts for repairs. The current mileage was 25,309 and the failure mileage was unknown. I am experiencing a continuing, dangerous and worsening spraying of gasoline when I fill the tank of my 2005 Jeep Wrangler unlimited. I have video evidence of this problem, and has been occurring since the vehicle had approximately 40,000 miles on it. I just learned this safety issue is well known within the Jeep community.

Approximately 1 year ago my 2005 Jeep Wrangler began overflowing from the fuel inlet during refueling. If I am not careful during refueling fuel will spit out from around the nozzle and spill down the vehicle. I have been doused with fuel on my legs and feet. The fuel tank automatic cut off does not appear to be functioning properly.

I purchased a used 2005 Jeep Wrangler with 17,000 miles. When I filled the tank, gas would gush out of the filler and splash all over the side of the vehicle. I had the vehicle repaired under warranty (new fuel tank), which did correct the problem. Now, at just over 51,000 miles, the problem has returned. Every time I fill the vehicle, this dangerous fuel spill occurs. I live in a very dry (low humidity) climate, and it is very common to get static discharge when touching any conductive surface. I am fearful that I am going to experience a vehicle fire if this situation continues. I can not understand how this problem has not caused a recall to correct the defect.

My 2005 Jeep Wrangler unlimited has an overfilling problem every single time I fill up at the gas station. It doesn't matter if I use the lowest setting on the gas pump or if I manually use as little pressure as possible, it overfills every single time and gas pours out of the fill spout running down the body of the vehicle, on my hand, on my clothes and on the ground. This is an extremely dangerous problem and affects the 2003-2006 Jeep Wrangler series.

Fuel overflow on 2005 Jeep Wrangler. I have done lots of research on this and it seems that the only solution is to replace the gas tank. It has happened to many people with similar model Jeep.

Sep 012010

Wrangler

  • 65,000 miles
When filling up the vehicle with gasoline, when the pump cuts off gasoline spurts out all over the side of the vehicle and the ground and sometimes over the person filling the tank. This happens whether the nozzle is being held and squeezed by the person filling or is locked in position for handsfree filling. It has happened consistently with fillups for the past 4-5 months no matter which gas station is used.

problem #142

Aug 012010

Wrangler

  • 75,000 miles
During fueling, when the fuel pump nozzle automatically stops the flow of gasoline, fuel surges back through the filler tube and vigorously splashes out on the side of the vehicle and anything or person within 2 to 3 feet of the fuel filler. This occurs every time the fuel tank is filled. It has spilled fuel on every fill up (at least one cup), despite precautions (slowing filling rate). Manufacturer and dealer have done nothing to correct this problem, this happens every time I fill up.

problem #140

Jan 082011

Wrangler

  • 57,500 miles
At around the 50K mileage mark, fuel would gush out when filling up the tank. Tried different gas stations, old and brand new pumps, all resulted in gas gushing out as the pump turned off. Chrysler-Jeep service replaced the fuel filler tube. Topped off the gas tank after the "fix", seemed good. Let the tank go down to less than 1/4 then filled the tank and the gas gushed out yet again! this is both a safety and environment issue. Please request Jeep to find a real fix for this and issue a recall.

When I fill my Jeep up with fuel it always overflows with fuel spewing on me the ground and my vehicle. Nothing seems to change it not slowing down the pump or anything. My research brings me to it being a failure with the rollover/checkvalve at the bottom of the filler tube failing to close allowing fuel to overflow. Here are some examples of other people with the same problem www.jeepforum.com/forum/F9/gas-spilling-over-when-filling-872096/ I have two more friends with Jeep with the same problem. Nothing was done to fix the issue it isn't covered under warranty. Was going to enter my VIN but the VIN entry doesn't work. So no VIN.

My "new" used 2005 Jeep tj will spill gas all over the place when filling up gas. It doesn't matter if I do it manually or let it fill up with the auto switch on. Even when I "hear" the gas near the top of the tank it still spits gas out of the tank and onto my hands, the side of the Jeep and on the ground. What a pain in the [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
