I was exiting the highway and came to a complete stop at a stop light. When I turned and proceeded right through the light, my Jeep lurched forward and there was an obvious resistance as I stepped on the gas. My ABS light came on immediately and I smelled something burning. I turned right into a shopping center and realized my brakes were completely out! I ended up coasting into a grassy area to stop the vehicle. My emergency brake did not work.
I exited the vehicle and noticed the brake line was severed and fluid was spewing out. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership where I learned the caliper completely broke off, caught on the wheel and upon rotation with the wheel, severed the brake line and ABS line. It caused damage to the rotor and brake pad therefore, all had to replaced. In addition, the brake line and ABS line required replacement, the brake fluid had to be flushed and replenished.
The dealer indicated he has no idea how this happened but the two bolts holding the caliper in place were missing.
