CarComplaints.com Notes: Kia really changed the design of the Sorento in the 2011 model year. Instead of a truck-like body-on-frame more capable of offroad adventures, the newest Sorento is a unibody construction and is much more crossover than sport utility. The changes brought a whole slew of problems, including a frustrating problem where the door that won’t open. Is it too late to go back?

The engine is knocking, oil leaking, oil light didn’t come on. Just recently had an oil change and every drop of oil is laying on my pavement... it’s a rod that’s stopping the oil to flow through.

I scheduled an appointment for 8:00 am Saturday morning on 11/28/14, and told them my vehicle was leaking oil. I dropped it off the night before. They didn't look at it until Saturday afternoon, shortly before closing & told me I'd have to come get it & bring it back Monday because they didn't have time to fix it. The timing chain cover was leaking.

They removed the timing chain cover & oil pan, cleaned them both & resealed. May 15, 2015, I took it back in for another oil leak. They replaced the oil gasket. A week later I took it back for oil leaking & three other issues. They gave me a loaner vehicle & had my vehicle for a week. They said it was residual oil dripping from not being properly cleaned the week before. It took a week for that diagnosis because the other issues weren't resolved either!

June16th, my Sorento is back at the dealership because it's still leaking & repeat of two of the other issues. Today is June 25th, they still have my vehicle. They dropped the engine & said it is leaking where the engine connects to the exhaust manifold & they had to reseal (again) the timing chain cover. They've yet to even start looking at the other problems.

Sorento V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

Main seal began leaking between 66000 - 69,xxx miles. Quart lost in 100 miles. Could not get into KIA dealer for diagnosis/repair for at least 1 1/2 weeks, so took to local authorized mechanic to perform work, which was under our 3rd party extended warranty we purchase (thankfully...as bill was approx. $1800) We purchase a year old, so did not fall under KIA transmission warranty of 10/100000.

While we do drive a lot of miles as this is our primary car for work and everything else, it is 90% highway/interstate and we change oil religously based on KIA recommendation (actually every 2 months/4000 miles)

Not only issue...quality on the Sorento we have is showing to be very poor.
