On April 8 2021 I had gotten an oil change at a local garage. That evening I was driving home and the engine stalled at the traffic light. I got it restarted and noticed the rpms was at 0. I pulled over and started it again then the engine knocked and made a noise. The next morning April 9 2021 and started to take it back to the garage and the engine smelled like burning oil then lost horsepower and the engine was really loud. I had it towed to the garage.

On Monday April 12 2021 the mechanic called and said that the motor was in need of replacement. I received a second call that evening that the Kia Sorentos were under a recall. I went online to find it didn't apply to mine so I called and was told it didn't cover my vin. 4 days later I went back to the website and on the 16th of April it said it was updated to include my Sorento. The recall was still closed.

I emailed Kia and nothing has been sent back. I placed a complaint with NTSHA and have read over 300 similar stories. Kia isn't wanting to do anything. I never received a recall letter by them and have been told that Kia has a recall but its too late to use it. I need to know what to do next?

Sorento 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 109,000 miles

My Kia Sorento 2.4 Liter engine failed on the highway. I heard some grinding and my engine shut down. Luckily, I was in the right lane and was able to exit off of the highway and coast to the middle of an intersection, whereby my nephew and son pushed me into a parking lot where I had it towed. Kia states my VIN is not in the group of VINS that were recalled. I find this hard to believe since my brother bought his Kia brand new on the same day I did and his engine failed at 101,000 miles and had to have his engine replaced as well. I am now in the process of dealing with Kia and they are trying to find some "good will" to assist in this expensive repair. So far it has been @ 2 months and they have not addressed the issue. What a nightmare!

Sorento 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles

On Christmas Day, 2018 driving on the interstate to visit family, the engine made a squeaking sound, then knocking and it lost a lot of power. It was difficult to control it to get it on the shoulder of the interstate. It died when we came close to stopping and when restarted had a knocking sound. We drove it to the exit 4 miles away and left it at a BK.

We got it towed back and was eventually told that the engine needed to be replaced. We were told by Kia that ours isn’t one effected by the recall. Engine replacements are quoted at $3000 for the just the engine itself. I fear putting in a different Kia Sorento motor will just result in the same problem happening again later on down the road.

Kia is obviously aware that this vehicle has so many problems but will not fix it. My family and I could have lost our lives on Christmas out of all the days because of there lack of empathy for their consumers. I will never recommend Kia to anyone again and I did love my car but not anymore.

I'm not going to go off, because I had a another Kia in the past. I like the Kia's, I'm just annoyed that I didn't receive any kind of notice regarding the engine issues. They've replaced several different issues - and I still enjoy my vehicle. It would've been nice to be notified that they extended the warranty. Just irritated about not being notified of issues that can cause the engine to seize.

Sorento LX 2.4L Gdi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 147,000 miles

Received letter from KIA extending my 10 year 100,000 mile warranty to 120,000 miles because of a KNOWN defect in the short block assembly. I received my letter when I already had over 120,000 miles but no problem with engine at the time!

Just three days ago, the car died on my wife; thankfully a couple of blocks from home, then restarted after several minutes and got it home. Next day car started with engine noise, went and filled up with gas then engine made horrible noises and died on me three miles from home and had to have it towed.

Called Kia and service department said I'm out of luck because I have 147,000 miles which is past the 120,000.

Sorento SX 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 84,099 miles

This Sorento has been a piece of garbage in so many ways since the day we bought it. Headlamp problems, back up camera quit, navigation has never worked right, thumping noises under the front end, plus the blown engine. The techs kept telling me the 'ticking/knocking noise' was "normal" for the GDI engines. BS!!!!! Blew a rod right through the oil an at 65mph on the interstate coming home from work. Still fighting with the dealer to make it right! We will NEVER buy another Kia.

My daughter drives my 2012 Kia Sorento which was bought new at the Lagrange, Georgia dealer. Friday night she called stranded on the side of the highway. I had the car towed to my mechanic who has determined that the engine has seized. This car was well maintained.

I have had previous warranty issues with Kia. The right front strut failed and Kia would not warranty the work even though it was under 50,000 miles at the time. I also had problems with the USB connector and w2ith the heated seats. They failed to fix either and now claim it is out of warranty.

I complained up the Kia corporate ladder and only found people to be more and more rude. The last person that I dealt with was down right threatening.

I dread dealing with them on this engine.

The Kia warranty is worthless. I will never buy another Kia product.
