Apparently this is a common problem for Nissan Muranos. My car would apply the breaks randomly while driving and the rmps would reach over 4,000 just going 65 mph. This would happen randomly and was never predictable. Seemed to happen more the longer my trips were. To and from work it wouldn't act up. But if I drove on the hwy for 30 min it would start to act up. Not worth it. Very frusterated

Murano SL 3.5L V6

  • CVT transmission
  • 93,250 miles

Bought this 2012 Nissan Murano with 75K miles on it in June 2019. The CVT failed 6 months later at just over 93K miles. No help from Nissan on the $5300 replacement cost.

I had done some research before buying it, which indicated that Nissan had supposedly fixed the Murano CVT issues in 2010. And my 2 previous vehicles (Ford 500's) had CVTs which worked fine for almost/over 200K miles on each one. Figured it was a good bet. Obviously not.

Now I'm seeing that this generation of Murano is having an inordinate number of CVT failures. I guess the CVTs are 90K replacement parts. I'll decide whether to keep it when I get up to 160K-170K miles.

Just paid off the car, then transmission failed. Nissan said cvt extended warranty on 2010,2011 and early 2012. Of course ours is a "late"2012.

What a pain - driving on highway - won't go higher then 60 mph - 4000 rpm's - could not go anywhere!

2012 Murano, well maintained, has the transmission go out suddenly and inexplicably. Started shuddering when accelerating from a stop. After a few minutes I heard a pop sound and then no more acceleration. The engine would rev, but the car was going nowhere. Transmission guy who did the initial assessment said Nissan CVTs are one of his most frequent vehicles in need of transmission replacement.

Called Nissan and of course the drivetrain warranties they have extended for other years/models are not applicable to my 2012 Murano. Nissan did suggest having it sent to a Nissan dealer to have the work done and they can make a determination from there, based on the findings. I am hoping they will be fair, as this is an issue beyond just my car...they have serious issues with their CVT transmissions across the board.

Makes me never want to buy another Nissan and to spread the word to the masses to avoid them like the plague. ARE YOU LISTENING, NISSAN????

Murano SL V6

  • CVT transmission

I had not read all these issues with the CVT going bad! I love the Murano. It is the most comfortable mid size SUV/CUV I have ever driven. The 2012 Murano has been meticulously maintained, so I was surprised and distressed that the transmission went while traveling between MA and NJ. Also distressing to find out so few mechanics can replace them, and that the replacements have such a short warranty! I guess Nissan does not care about repeat business by supplying safe and reliable vehicles.

This is the 2nd CVT failure on Nissan, has no warning, no diags get reported, it just dies while you are driving.

The car once parked, would not go into reverse and 2nd time meaning every 60K miles is this happening to everyone. It seems many videos are out on youtube talking about NISSAN CVT failure rate as unacceptable.

Murano SV V6

I purchased the vehicle January 2016 and March 2017 I had to replace the transmission for $3400.00 due to faulty CVT powertrain. Nissan refused to pay for the replacement because my year vehicle was not included in the extended warranty
