CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012-2017 Nissan Versa has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Versa owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

I was driving about 30 miles/hour, there was a sound and the car shut down, engine stopped, lost power steering and brake became heavy, no lights in speedometer and indicators went off/black screen. Brakes were soft but I was able to stop. I restarted the engine and I was able to drive. Then I was on a freeway about 20 min later, driving 65 miles/hour and the car made a big noise, shook as if I drove on a pothole, and it was the same thing. No engine, accelerator didn't work, I was coasting, lost power steering, and hard to push down breaks. Power in the panels were off. I was able to use emergency signal, pulled over eventually and waited for about 3-4 min. Before restarting the car. It worked again and I was able to drive. The same thing happened last year, and today it happened twice. Both times, it was a hot day.

When car is in motion the brakes will not work and it slides. The ABS and traction control lights come on and the speedometer jumps. I've had 2 mechanics look at it and they say its because the axle nut backs off. Took it to gunter Nissan on 6/6/19 and they refused to service it saying I had to contact Nissan corporate but Nissan corporate says I have to take it to a dealership.

Vibrations felt through the steering column, seats and floor, whenever car is in gear and stopped at a light or idle. Vibration gets worse when ac or defrost is turned on. It goes away when I put the car in neutral. However car takes some time to move when shifting back to drive, and this can cause someone to hit you from behind. Taken to the dealer 3 times. I was told that this vibration is completely normal and there is nothing that can be done. Very disapointed to say the least.

Vehicle moves abruptly left and right when there are no grooves or wind at highway speeds. It's very dangerous and cannot be driven on the freeway safely. Nissan test drove vehicle. Acknowledged the problem and said that's just how the vehicle is and there is nothing they can do to fix it.

The steering wheel locks up when engine is shut off. When I place they key into the ignition, the steering wheel remains locked, preventing the switch to turn. It takes a great amount of effort and strain to unlock the steering wheel. This has happened on more than one occasion. My car has 2200 miles on it currently (09/29/2014). I took my car to the Nissan dealership. They advised me (my interpretation of their advice) to wrestle with it until it unlocks. Didn't help my situation. I will continue to return to Nissan until they fix it.

Driving down the highway I found that the car would move sideways 1 and a half feet on a non windy day. When driving on the freeway and you are on concrete the car tracks 1.5 feet sideways right or left. When driving on a day when the wind is 30mph you get 3 to 4 feet drift right or left. Taking the car to Nissan for repair they found that yes it did drift and blamed it on the road and that Nissan had on fix. I do have 2 other cars which have the same size tires that do not do the change lane action that is with this car is doing. Other people said they noticed it to. There will be a time when the car next to you will get damaged due to this action.I `called Nissan headquarter they had no fix.and said it might be the tires. Nissan put the tires on the car.
