THIS IS A STRESS FRACTURE OF SOME SORT, DEFINITELY NOT RESULTING FROM ANY DAMAGE TO THE WINDSHIELD. IT APPEARED SPONTANEOUSLY FROM THE UPPER WINDSHEILD SEAL ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE.

windshield cracked

I just had the windshield replaced on Aug 6. Now a rock chip with the new windshield and it immediately splits from the passenger side going to the middle. Now I am afraid to get another windshield due to the cost. This isn't right and needs further investigation by the manufacturer.

windshield cracked

The windshield cracked and grew to about a 2 foot long crack from lower passenger side up and toward center. Hot July day and ac was on. Dealer installed new windshield but not covered under warranty. There is a service bulletin covering this but only for 2015? Seems they don't want to replace their defective windshields anymore. I see a class action lawsuit, too.

windshield cracked

Dealer would not honor any warranty. Vehicle is only two months old and less than 800 miles on it at the time. Chip is very tiny (see photo) but caused crack to spread across windshield within driver's view.

This is an extensive single crack, which starts from the very top of the window. There is no evidence of a stone hitting the window. Though the car is leased, I was told the warranty does not cover cracked windshields, because it falls into the category of damage to vehicle. Though I do have windshield replacement coverage, I am not sure the calibration of Eyesight will be covered. It seems to me that the cracked windshield problem is one that Subaru easily fluffs off. I was disappointed in their response.

I was driving along and the windshield just cracked and ran immediately. So, getting it replaced is very costly and only because of the recalibration of the cameras. This is totally ridiculous. The calibration cost more than the windshield and the labor to install the windshield. I'm just not happy with the quality - this glass seems like it is made of tissue paper. Saving on weight costs the customer. And since there are so many being replaced, I have to wait on the production of glass. The place that replaces the windshields say they do a lot of Subarus daily.

Update from Aug 3, 2021: Had the windshield repaired at Gen Auto Glass, as per dealer recommendation. Had to pay up front for OEM windshield from dealer. Took about 3 hours to replace and calibration on the cameras. Totally unnecessary in my opinion. Just another ploy to take my money. The way this crack just ran like it did was / is not very safe, IMO.

Update from Sep 18, 2021: My windshield barely lasted a month. Cracked on the passenger side and immediately ran towards the middle. Can someone explain why there are not simple rock chips, like the last 20 vehicles I have owned? This is ridiculous and now very costly. I’m wondering if I should write a separate complaint? Not happy at all!

Update from Sep 18, 2021: Didn’t last a month.

Windshield on my 2020 Outback cracked. Vehicle only has 2,800 miles and 90 percent of these are local, city miles. I've taken it on only two road trips and never have I heard a rock hit the windshield. There is literally no big chip or chunk taken out of the windshield. I have no idea when or how it has cracked...

While driving a 75 MPH, we heard a loud cracking sound, and the windshield cracked from bottom left, upward, and across the center of the windshield. We were unaware of anything hitting the windshield, as there was no traffic. Brought the car to the Subaru dealership we bought it from, the service manager took a look, said rock hit, no warranty, and wouldn't speak to us after that.

Update from May 29, 2021: I contacted Subaru USA after I filed the complaint. The windshield will be replaced free of charge.

The car was hit with a tiny pebble kicked up from the road by a car, no visible marks on windshield. 8 hours later I came out to find my windshield had cracked into an S shaped crack that extended across 3/4th of the windshield. This should not have happened.

Why in the world does it cost thousands to replace a windshield. Yes I know all the special features this vehicle supposedly comes with but really. $2500 was the quote, luckily I had purchased the extended warranty for windshields. Outrageous charges for inferior windshields. Just read the hundreds of posts.

Subaru makes sh*tty windshields! PERIOD! And requires you to replace with OEM but can't warranty it. Nope, not going to take this lightly. If I hadn't have purchased the extended warranty for window coverage, I would have been out Big Bucks on a brand new car.

Took new car for a drive within the first 24 hours of owning it and windshield cracked. Glad I didn’t spring for extra warranties that WOULDN’T have covered the replacement. First insurance claim and deductible made. On top of it, Safelite doesn’t have the programming for 2020 models, yet, so I have to pay out of pocket for Eyesight recalibration at the dealership.
