Great car, never had a problem with it until now. Upon leaving for work, the transmission shifter was completely free moving and not engaging the transmission. It was determined that the shift cable snapped. Prior to this, there was absolutely no indication of a problem with the cable.

The mechanic indicated that this becoming a common problem due to the car getting older and it's not part of the "normal" service recommendations to grease the cable, which would have been $20 for them to grease it!. What if I was driving this car and needed to shift from Drive to neutral or gear 2 or 1, and this broke while driving? I could have been seriously hurt or worse! Toyota needs to realize that many of its older cars are still on the road, and this could have been easily corrected!

Because of this, I had to pay $660 to replace this cable ($300 for the cable, $360 for labor & taxes) and lose most of my day at work because I was out of a car.
