Corolla LE 2.8L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 150,000 miles

The stock radio would occasionally either not turn on, or display really faint partial letters and not turn on at all. Usually smacking it a few times would fix it. I replaced the unit with a Pioneer head unit and the problem is less frequent, but the head unit sometimes fails to turn on until several minutes after driving, so it appears to wiring related.

At random times my radio, which is the standard factory radio, will go completely bonkers. It has a cd player in it and the buttons to change a song, eject, etc., will not work. The display on the radio will look unrecognizable, displaying images that make no sense at all. None of the buttons will work, and if they do, it does something completely different than what it's supposed to do. Sometimes the volume will turn up or down on its own and when I try to manually fix it, it doesn't work.

I usually have to shut off the car to reset it and then it goes back to normal. There is no rhyme or reason for it at all. I should mention that my car idles low, especially at red lights, and to fix this I have to put on the rear defrost. The rear defrost button seems to bring the idle back up to normal. I don't believe this is supposed to happen. Me and my husband feel like there is some type of electrical issue, but I'm not spending the money to fix it. Otherwise it works fine.
