Let me start out by saying that about 2 weeks ago, the check hybrid light went on. I was totally freaked out and stopped along the roadside. A highway patrol man stopped behind me to ask me if he could assist. He said he had experienced that error on other Prius cars and didn't think it was a problem. I restarted the car a few times to get rid of the light, which is what the internet said to do. It seemed to drive fine over the next 1-1/2 weeks. However, since I needed an oil change anyway, I told the Toyota dealership of the hybrid light going on and they dismissed it because they said they couldn't recreate the problem.

I was assured at that point that the car was okay, and I was going to be safe going on a little road trip. Fast forward to 3 days ago. I was on my way with a car full of stuff on a 200 mile road trip when the car failed in Oakland, CA, 40 miles from home. The car started slowing down on the freeway even though I was trying to accelerate. Very luckily, there just happened to be a Toyota dealership across the freeway and we slowly drove to it. They treated us really well and gave me a free rental car for a couple of days until the car was going to be fixed.

So, 2 days later, on Saturday late afternoon I picked up the car. BTW, my service manager was awesome. So nice. I'm driving home and get just on the city limits of San Jose when the light comes on again and the car starts slowing down. This was the last thing I expected at this point after spending $1200 on the repair work. So this is where the fun part comes in. I'm sitting in a business park on a Saturday night, all alone at 5pm. My service advisor isn't answering my texts and I'm getting worried because the dealership closes at 8pm. I finally got hold of the operator and told her to get me a service manager because it was an emergency. I got hold of another great service advisor and she got a tow truck to pick up me and my car and take us back to Oakland. My rental car was still there and I was able to pick it up again.

Today is Monday and I still don't have my car back. I'm going to try to get some kind of guarantee from them on parts and labor. I don't know if this will be possible. In the meantime, we have done some research and found that this is a known problem and there is a California class action suit against Toyota due to this same Prius Inverter issue.

died while driving

I was on a 7 hour drive and was 1 hour away from my destination. Everything was fine, cruse control set at 72 mph. All of a sudden the master warning light came on, the info section said "check hybrid system" & "check PCS System". All of the dash light were lit. I lost all power due to the engine stalling with no warning. I was able to cross 3 lanes of traffic on the interstate to the shoulder without causing an accident somehow. I then shut the car off and restarted it. I was able to drive about 25 feet before the engine died and lost all power. Had to call AAA to tow it to the nearest dealership. At the dealership they couldn't figure out what was wrong with the car for 3 days. The charged me $198/hr x 10hrs for labor and testing. Once they found it was the fuel pump they had the job done in under 3 hours.

A clunk was heard then the car would only run at 5 miles per hour. The dealer said the hybrid inverter/ traction motor needed replacement and the gel battery needed replacement at a cost of $350 of which the battery on the open market cost $150. This was a rip off by the dealer.

Motor was not functioning on our 2010 Prius. Car ran at 20 mpg using battery power. Loud noise from engine. Mechanic thinks motor broke down due to excessive oil usage although oil change is occurring per timeline. Extraordinary expense. Unwittingly, we bought 2017 Prius just last week.

Prius

  • Automatic transmission
  • 125,000 miles

My 2010 Prius just stopped while driving (thankfully side road). It has 125000 miles but no problem to date. I just changed the starter battery (not the main hybrid battery) about 2 months back. Could have been dangerous if I were on freeway. Any other occurrences out there similar to this?

Car is in shop awaiting diagnostics.

the local dealer 'service manager' claims the technician says this is impossible. Their solution is to sell me a new key fob, supposedly to fix the key NOT Being detected, when I told them that the problem was that on a 50 mph road the car when moving lost power and the message flashing was Key DETECTED in vehicle (normally a key is expected to be in the car when it is running)
