When the ignition turns on the car passes the initial safety checks. But when driving the " warning light that the driver side air bag has failed " comes on. Toyota does not currently have any recall on this defect. But apparently the dealership keeps the failed part in stock.

While my daughters were travelling North on the freeway an oncoming vehicle driven by an elderly lady entered the freeway going in the wrong direction. It was night time and it was raining. The cars in front of them started responding in various ways trying to avoid this vehicle. There were a number of crashes. Our vehicle hit the side rail and the vehicle in front of us. The car hit had quite a lot of damage and our vehicle was totaled. It was deemed a no fault accident on our part due to the nature of the incident. Our Yaris was totaled. Completely smashed in front and sides, driver door would not even open yet no air bags deployed. None. The police officer, tow truck driver, other individuals also involved in the incident, as well as my daughters all witnesses to the state of the vehicle, were shocked with this. The vehicle was even difficult to tow. My husband and I were equally distraught at learning these air bags did not deploy in this accident as a friend of our daughter's was recently killed in a similar incident here in Virginia when a drunk driver going the wrong way on a road ran in to her. We want to record this with all the appropriate authorities for further investigation. My children were able to walk away but other families may not be so lucky. Please investigate this thoroughly as it may save future lives. We can send photos or anything you might require for this investigation. Again the car was totaled and no air bags deployed, simply shocking and distressing as this is a basic safety feature nowadays.

During the night of 9/1/2008 I was operating a 2008 Toyota Yaris when I lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a garage point of impact: 15 total lose. I was injured and have had neck surgery and have chronic pain because of the crash after my surgery. I viewed the pictures of the vehicle I noticed that the air bags didn't deploy on impact and one of the pictures of the inside of the vehicle (the left window guard has a foam type substance connected to it) months later I contacted the insurance company and asked them where the car was after about 6 contacts and 2 months later I received a answer the vehicle was auctioned and shipped too india. I have the contact information but the attorneys I contacted won't touch the case because of the cost and this was the second crash in 6 months and the collision center was told of the air bags not deploying the first time. I have pictures of the vehicle if that will help. I noticed other failures concerning the same type of vehicle, same year I hope that ODI will make Toyota fix this problem before someone dies in a crash.
