On my taking my kids to school, I heard a pop and lost my power steering. After dropping off my son, my van started running hot, so I stopped at a gas station. After putting anti-freeze in my reservoir, I noticed my alternator had broke off and was laying to the side and no site of my serpintene belt. Without that belt, you have no charge going back to the battery, no water pump, no a/c compressor, and no power steering. I later found out that the part that broke off is part of the timing cover and it is a lot of work to get another one on get the alternator back in the right spot for the belt. Why is this part not separate from the engine, as the timing cover for the van is made of chip aluminum and not made of steel as it should be?
