yes ford i can not believe the stuff you are putting out there, i've replaced the rear end in this truck twice because of your negligence. now the rear end roars like the differential is about to lock up, let alone the transmission is starting to slip, my god if you do believe in god you better hope my family is safe and that you take responsibility for your mistakes, god forbid its your family riding around in this truck, but you better hope nothing endangers my family. and survive , i will pursue compensation and every thing ford has down to the coffin henry ford is layin in now, i see why henrys brother put the hydrosalator in the vehicles. its a warning that you should heed. we are your customers, you're about to lose millions of customers and dollars......i guess its true that ford means F*#@$ed Over Rebuilt Dodge.

I ditto most of the complaints already - whirling noise, started at 78,000 miles, warranty expired at 75k and dealer and Ford would not comply. I continued driving and the noise never got worse, it now has 105k on it.
Took it in on 4/14/08, auto shop was not certain it was the ring and pinion. They removed wheels/axles to inspect bearings - never removed them but by rotating the hubs they felt they were going bad. Knowing this was a FE problem I agreed to have them fixed. They called back and said the noise is still there. F!!!!
I am having them proceed with a ring and pinion repair, i'll see what happens. POS Fords.

My ex-wife had the car for 4 months after we were divorced and it started to make the whining noise. she took it in and it cost around 500.00 dollars to replace the bearings and seals and they said the diff was empty. Now I have the vehicle back and its starting to do the same thing again, only on the front dif. This is ridiculous.... this is an expensive vehicle already and the cost of the repairs is just as nutssss. They need to recall the diffs and fix what they f#$@ed up in the first place... I will never buy another ford for this matter.....

I have had many problems with this vehicle from transmission to radiator to drive train.
I had the rear end repaired in late 2005-early 2006. It started making noise about a year later so I took it back in and was told that the differential is vented by a tube that lets water into the differential causing the rear end to go bad. They did not know this at the time I got it fixed the first time NOW I HAVE TO GET IT FIXED AGAIN - FORD WILL NOT BACK THIS OR THE TRANSMISSION THAT WENT OUT AT JUST OVER 65,000.00 miles.
I HAVE WELL OVER $5,000.00 in repairs just on the transmission, radiator, rear end and wheels -

I have been hearing a slight humming noise so I decided to take a look under the SUV. That was when I noticed the differential was wet with oil. A few days later I noticed a couple drops of oil on the floor of my garage then a few days after that it just stopped leaking. I have not checked the level of oil as yet but I see that there are no recalls on this problem and I think that it is madness. The hum is still there though.
Is there a recent fix to this problem? Please help! Any do it yourselfers out there? The dealership is another joke by itself!

Don't ever buy a Ford vehicle. I paid $28,000 (brand new) for this piece of crap in 2002 and it has been nothing trouble. Here a just a few of the issues: Drive train whining noise from rear differential due to a manufacturers defect. Cost of repair approx. $2,000. Body trim and interior trim fading and flaking due to inferior materials. This started to occur shortly after 3 years and my Explorer is in a garage at home and at work. Engine idles ruff. Ford has looked at this problem several times out of warranty but was unable to fix. Rear door cracked down the middle exterior panel which I have noticed this trademark on many Explorers I have seen. The rear door hatch struts do not work due to inferior parts. Rear door interior plastic falls off the door. Once again cheap inferior parts. There were other issues that I had repaired while the Explorer was still under warranty but it would take too long to go into detail on all of them but the service was also just as lousy as the vehicle.
At the time I purchased my Explorer, Ford was posting record profits for all the automotive industry. Cheap labor from Mexico and record sales of light trucks, SUV's enabled them to make the big $$$, but guess what those profits were not going back into their products but rather to stock holders and company execs.. My wife been driving a Honda and Acura for the past 15 years and I always encouraged her to by American but she would not listen to me. You know who the dummy is. Ford vehicles are primarily manufactured in Mexico and more recently in China where the labor is even cheaper than Mexico. Honda and Acura are manufactured in the USA. Take a look at consumer reports and see what vehicles have the best customer satisfaction HONDA and ACURA! I guess I should start listening to my wife.

Hi all well I to have the same problem as all of you loud whining/grinding noise from rear. Brought it to my mechanic he told me the bearing was shot. He also told me that in 2005 there were 2 bulletins issued in regards to this problem and before he has to fix it for $500 try to have the dealer fix it for free.
I called the first dealer Able ford in Oceanside New York told them of the problem..they told me there was no recall on the truck for this problem. So then I called the dealer I purchased the truck from Hempstead Ford in Hempstead New York, after explaining the problem and giving them the file numbers on the bulletins and asking if they would fix it for free same as a recall they said no problem we would take care of it. I have a appointment in the morning. The File #'s are 05-23-3 of nov. 05 drivetrain rear axle humming and 05-25-8 of Dec. '05 same title. Hope this helps.

We have always been strong Ford people but over the last year we are questioning our loyalty. Our 02 Ford Explorer was purchased new and serviced faithfully every 3,000 miles by the dealership. At 178,000 miles we began to feel a shudder from the back of the vehicle during low speed turns. While I know this is a lot of miles and reading here, many people have problems much sooner, I still questioned why the dealer did not suggest servicing it on a regular basis. I was told it was a sealed system and did not require service and they said this was a common problem with the clutch pack on 02 and 03 explorers. We paid the $1300+ and moved on.
Now after just 24,000 miles on the rebuild which included clutch packs and ring and pinion gears we are having the same problem. Returning the the dealer we've been told that it once again needs a new clutch pack and ring and pinion and also carrier bearings for an estimate of $1550. After considerable complaining, the dealership said to call the Ford customer service center, which we did. Our frustration after calling customer service was even higher because they seemed to deny, or at least suggest, that they have no knowledge of this problem while our local dealership says they are on at least the 3rd revision of the clutch pack. While we complained to both the dealership and Ford, neither are willing to share in the expense and they say the repair only had a 12,000 mile warranty.
To make matters worse we our 2003 Expedition has started experiencing the same problem and I am sure we are in for a similar repair on it.
Our family with 4 Fords and 3 children driving or approaching driving age is looking serious at moving to anything BUT Ford.

After talking with several ford service techs, ( I used to work in a ford dealership) Ford is aware of there bearing problems in the rear axles. They have numerous service bulletins Since it is not a safety concern ford will not do anything to help assist in the cost of repairs. Maybe they are waiting for those bearings to seize up at 70 mph and someone dies before they decide to do something. I think their lightbulb is burning out. This problem occurred twice on this SUV! The second time the warranty company asked us if we had changed the oil in the differential, after about 30,000 miles of use. Check with your dealer, they are now suggesting the differential oil be changed more than specified in the owner's manual. Something is seriously wrong with this drivetrain. Fortunately for us, the warranty company paid for the repair.

I just got this vehicle back from my ex-wife and noticed an annoying noise coming from the rear end on acceleration only.I hadn't driven the vehicle in quit some time, the first thing I noticed was that it needed new tires. So I spent $525 on new cooper discoverer nt tires. This helped with the overall ride but the noise is still present.I have also noticed that the noise is mainly present while accelerating from 30-55 mph,but when I'm at a steady 65-75 it's not that noticeable. It is however an annoying noise enough to tell me something isn't right. For this reason I searched the web for a solution and came to this site can only hope that ford does the right thing and recalls for this problem or they will lose alot of potential future buyers!!!

If your reading this its because you own a piece of crap too! I bought this 2002 Explorer thinking I would have a good truck that I wouldn't have to fix all the time. Well, I have put more money into this truck than any car or truck I've ever owned and it still is costing me money. As of today, its a $1200 exhaust system and that's after a new valve head and motor mount and timing chain and timing chain tensioners. But I think I'm more mad at the rear diff. limited clutch pack that is making so loud of a noise I can't drive it any more. Ford knows about the problem and won't help,so I joined the class action law suit against Ford to try and make them fix it. I WILL NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN THE REST OF MY LIFE NOR IF I CAN HELP IT NO ONE I KNOW WILL BUY A FORD.!!!!!!!!!! I HOPE FORD GOES BELLY UP AND OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rear differential is leaking, I found this when I noticed a loud whining from the rear end,(sounds like we are in an airplane). I pulled the drain plug and the gear lube came out dark & thick. Definitely doesn't look like the synthetic gear lube that they claim they used. Differential was full. Refilled with synthetic mobile 1, noise is just as loud as before. I don't know what to do from here. After reading complaints I refuse to go to a dealer. Where do I go from here without getting shafted?

At about 50000 miles I noticed a muffled grinding sound in the rearend of my 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer. I purchased the vehicle new and have owned many an explorer in my past. I had the transmission replaced at 45000 miles but that's a story for another entry. The typical rearend noise all you folks have been complaining about was evident but not too bad. Last week I travelled to Chattanooga from Knoxville and back and the muffled grinding turned into what seemed like the rear wheels were fused together. I had to goose the vehicle to turn out of a parking space from a stand still. The problem was worse when hot. I turned my vehicle in to the local Ford dealer with my extended warranty in hand. They took good care of me and provided a rental car free of charge. I was told that all the parts in the rearend had to be replaced and thank the Lord I have an extended warranty. The bad side is it expires this October so hopefully everything that's going to break will do it before then. I agree that it seems that there are issues with the 2002 drive trains. Ford should do something about it and if someone want's to open a class action suit I'd be happy to join.

I have a roar in the rear end. I take it to the shop and they tell me that my rear differential is going bad. Well that's just great car is almost paid off and rear differential is going out. They also told me that ford is aware of this and they want do anything about it because it's not a safety issue. Well that's bad business if you ask me. I contact ford and this is what they have to say.Ford and the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) work together to pro actively identify areas of concern through investigation of consumer and dealer feedback. During an investigation Ford cooperates fully with NHTSA. Ford does not speculate on the outcome of any current investigation or future actions. Similar story to everyone else. First I had the sound of a low whistle. It disappeared and became a low grumble. After reading about it here! I took it into the dealership. They had seen it all before and were very nice to deal with. No recall on this yet. It was the pinion bearing. Also he said the axles seals were blown out which caused the pinion problem.

I am starting to sound like a constant complainer but, if Ford wouldn't provide the fuel, I wouldn't have a fire to roast my marshmallows on.....Took my 02 Explorer to a non-Ford mechanic yesterday and they replaced my rear axle seals (since that was what Ford said needed to be fixed) $150 compared to $600.00 thru Ford (PCV valve replacement and seals) and they stated that I need to have the rear differential serviced. Mine too makes the noise and I have less than 50K on it. I too thought it was the tires, but we just Costco'd and got some new tires. Anyhow they didn't go into to much detail since they were afraid I would go elsewhere (since they ran out of time to fix my vehicle and were closing up shop). Their reply, maybe next time. I have a leak somewhere too (MAF) and my check engine light is still on. Something about a P0174 error (last dealership changed out my O2 sensors). When it rains it pours. I have this horrible feeling that I am going to be taken to the cleaners since my vehicle is doing the same things others are writing about and I don't have a warranty. Looking for a different vehicle as I am typing. :0)

As you can see, my rear differential decided to go on Thanksgiving day. So you can imagine the frustration. It started making a whining noise when I would step on the accelerator above 40 mph. The fluid level was fine, but the mechanic (thankfully one on duty that day) pulled out the magnet plug and there was a lot of metal on the end of it. Had a used differential pulled from a salvage yard.
Add this to my $4,000 transmission overhaul last year, and you'll understand why I am ready to scream.

Update on my problem. I worked out a deal with Ford to get my rear end overhaul for $1100; however, I found out, today, that when they got in there, a bearing had fused to the differential assembly and it was going to cost an additional $600 just for the part. Fortunately the service manager agreed to only charge me $400 for the part and no additional labor. This still brings my total to $1500 for this problem.

Started out as a grinding when turning at slow speeds. I only bought this 13 months ago and feel that since there are TSBs on the issue, then they should have covered it before I bought it.

We bought our used 2002 Ford Explorer,in the beginning of 2006. This was our 3rd Ford Explorer!! There was a low roaring noise in the rear when we bought it, we thought it was the tires. Eventually this noise got unbearable. We had all new tires put on, still the noise was there. Then we thought maybe the brakes were causing the noise. We did all new brakes, still the noise persisted. We went on line to find out other Ford owners are having the same problems. We called Ford Customer Service only to be told there is no recall on this problem because it is not considered a safety issue. They suggested we have our vehicle diagnosed at a Ford dealer. On 10/20/07, I had my car diagnosed at Ford, for $94.00, and confirmed it was the rear axle differential. I was also told to avoid driving, or drive as little as possible because it could cease up while driving, and can be a safety concern if unit fails.
WHY IS THIS NOT DEEMED A SAFETY ISSUE??? WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL ON THIS??? This particular Ford dealer said they do about 6 rear end differentials a month on this problem! Ford is aware of this problem, they want us as consumers of their product to fix their problem at our expense!! I am furious!! The cost of this repair is about $1200.00!! If Ford won't willing stand behind their product, step up to the plate and make good on their failed product, the legal system should make them.

My rear differential failed at only 65,000 miles. This is uncanny because I got an extended warranty up to 60,000 miles. My father has an Explorer and his rear differential failed at around 70,000 miles. Ford tells you that it is lubricated for life and also not to service it until 150,000 miles. There is an obvious problem with ford rear ends and it's annoying that all you can do is eat the cost.

ok i got this vehicle 11months ago apparently from a really bad car lot, the first thing i notice about 2hrs after driving this thing was a loud noise in the back that vibrated the whole truck, call the dealer brought it in diagnosis it as bad rear diff, he fix it apparently, the noise started back about 3days later, call the dealer brought it back diagnosis the noise (vibration gone now)as bad brakes repair the brakes quite the car somewhat, but the noise stater again so i took the truck to cv pros who stated that my u joints were rusty. a month pass i notice the noise again but this time it sounded like the truck needed tires but before i could get the tires change the right tire popped off while i was driving with my 2 children had the thing towed to a local car repair place was told that 4 lug nuts had popped off, they repair that but advise me that my rooters where not correct on the vehicle, so i called the dealer told him i almost die and that i wanted another vehicle or my money back, his reply was i can't do that but i well repair your brakes he did my brakes a total of 4times. The noise still c0ntiued so i took my vehicle to a local brake place and paid for a complete brake inspection the whole system was shot, i call the dealer and told him that if he didn't correct this problem i was going to make a complaint to the state. so i went to ford this time he paid for the assement and i sat right there in watch them order the parts, he refuse to let ford fix the brakes claiming that they were trying to rip him off and he didn't want any one else fixing the truck. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT THE NOISE COMING FROM THE BACK WASN'T MY BRAKES IT WAS MY REAR DIFF (YEAH THE ONE HE CLAIM HE REPAIR) THAT'S GONNA COST ME $840 TO REPAIR PLUS THE SLENOID IN THE TRANSMISSION FOR RIDING THE CAR WITH A BAD DIFF. My story is similar to everyone else's regarding my 02 Explorer. I bought the car used without test driving the car over 50 mph. After a trip to the cottage and an oil leak on the drive I knew I had problems. I took it to Dean Sellers Ford in Troy, MI to have the leak, the whine and the rumble looked at. The service person acknowledged that this happened a lot and they would look at it. They gave me a quote of $1900.00 to fix the leak, rebuild the differential and replace the right wheel bearing. When I balked they offered 10% off. I took it elsewhere for the differential work ($1200) and had the right bearing done somewhere else ($320). It was still loud so I had the left wheel bearing replaced ($320). It was better but now I can a definite whine from the rear end again between 45-65 mph. A complaint to Ford got a response that this was "normal" for an "older vehicle". Screw these guys!

Where do I begin?! I have always considered myself a Chevy guy until I met my fiancee and started to drive her '99 Eddie Bauer Explorer. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the durability of her SUV and decided to sell my '79 MonteCarlo to my 16 year-old brother. I purchased my '02 XLT on June 6, 2007 from Washington Chevrolet. The vehicle was in pristine condition and the asking price was only $11,995. "Not a bad deal", I thought to myself. The SUV had 72,428 on it and only one previous owner. I drove the truck to and from Pittsburgh weekly and soon, I began to notice the infamous "whine, groan, grind" that so many '02 owners are b---hing about.
With 1084 miles remaining on my 3k mile/3 month drive train warranty from Washington Chevrolet, I took it in looking for a remedy to the problem. I told the Chevy Dealer that I noticed several TSBs regarding this problem and that I wanted it fixed.
Obviously, Washington Chevrolet needed to contact the local Ford dealer to have them examine the vehicle to "see if there was indeed an issue with the rear differential." As I had previous experience with Washington Ford (with my fiancee's '99 Eddie), I was more than happy to take it there.
I left the vehicle with Washington Ford Monday morning at 7am and ended up picking it up Friday at 8am. This was mostly due to the b. s. that Chevy put Ford through (and ultimately me) during the warranty service authorization.
It started out with the rear differential ring and pinion gears needing replaced ($1204.75)and both rear wheel bearings & the left front wheel bearing ($811.30).
Originally, Washington Chevy attempted to say that GM's warranty would not cover the LF wheel bearing. That was until I got a hold of GM's warranty service by phone (Now where is that phone #?... Oh, heck, Google it!). I proceeded to explain the warranty details on the window tag to the representative and then explained that the '02 Explorer is a full-time 4wd vehicle, thus the LF bearing should indeed be covered by the power train warranty. He asked to take a moment to speak to his supervisor and then after 5 or so minutes, he reported that it was going to be covered. I was happy to hear this and quickly took down his name and rep ID #. Needless to say, Washington Chevrolet WAS NOT HAPPY absorbing this cost (as they thought they could weasel me out of it).
The repairs were finished Wednesday afternoon and I picked the vehicle up Friday morning. It drove like it was fresh off the assembly line, UNTIL my fiancee drove it to Pittsburgh for an interview. Upon returning home in Washington, she stated that, "something" was still not "exactly right" with the SUV.
I immediately took it back to Washington Ford to let a tech drive it with me in the vehicle to hear and feel the shudder/moan from the rear of the vehicle was producing during low-speed turns. Immediately, the technician shook his head and stated that I would need to return the truck to get the clutch packs replaced.
That's going to occur this Tuesday. We'll see how this pans out.
I will definitely say that the staff of Washington Ford has been outstanding despite all the b. s. from Washington Chevrolet. It is the manufacturer's problem and lack of responsibility in 'fessing up to their poor choice of parts or design.

Have been tolerating a noise in the rear of the vehicle for quite a while and it started to become even louder (sounded like a humming noise as if the rear-end had no lubrication in it -- dry as a bone!!!). I took my Explorer to FORD-LINCOLN-MERCURY TEAM TOYOTA in Steubenville, Ohio where they told me that the left rear wheel bearing was bad and needed to be replaced. Also both rear springs were broken and needed to be replaced. $255.40 for the rear wheel bearing and $441.52 for the springs. Over $700 later, the noise is still present and sounds dryer than ever and is humming louder than I have ever heard it. After asking around, I found that there are many Explorer owners with the same noise. It appears that Ford has a problem and doesn't want to admit it, let alone make it good!!!!
I love the Explorer, but hate the "unsolvable" noise.
Very disappointed, angry and frustrated.

I don't have this howling noise that some of you are talking about, but I have seen my problem in this section, too. There is a weird feeling from vehicle while turning after coming to a complete stop (like it was locked in 4wd) or driving over rumble strips - it feels like it's grinding. It doesn't happen when the car is cold, but begins after driving for an hour, or so. I have already replaced front and rear wheel bearings, and brakes.
If anyone can tell me exactly what the fix is here, and give me an approx. dollar amount, please write back to me! Thanks!

Oil still dripping out of rear end, still same annoying noise!!! Not for sure if I am going to get it fixed or run it over a hill!! From the numerous complaints I have read from other Ford Explorer owners I now realize that the problem is with the differential and that Ford Motor Company should stand behind their products and issue an immediate recall. I don't feel I should have to spend any more money on this vehicle when the problem is obviously with the manufacturer.

We were having noises coming from the back of the SUV. We took it in and got it back 2 months later (because of so long for parts and how busy they were, thank goodness they gave us a rental) they had to replace the whole thing. They said there were metal shavings and it had no fluid. NOT GOOD. I think after everything that has gone wrong with this SUV Ford owes me for all of the inconveniences. I will never buy a Ford again.

I seem to have the same complaint almost everyone else does with the '02 Explorer. My rear diff has been making noise for the last 2-3 months and of course changing the fluid didn't help. Apparently it had been leaking because when I drained it there was only about .5-.75 liters of fluid that came out and it looked like mud. My next step is to try replacing the seals and if that doesn't work I guess I will try to track down a salvaged diff and see if maybe that will help. If none of that works I guess I trade it in on something else and just hope the dealer I take it to isn't aware of the problem.

I have had several service outlets notice the rear differential seal issue and each had one comment in common... 'this problem seems inherent to the differential engineering and Ford is no doubt aware of the problem, but seems reluctant to issue a recall.' This seems par for the course for Ford when it comes to such problems. Now I come across this significant list of complaints with each indicating Ford's intent to ignore rather than fix the problems and save customer relationships. I will vote with my feet if they refuse to address my issues.

Just the same as everyone else that owns a 2002 Explorer, the seals on the rear differential are bad... I've got it worse though, cause I have the same problem in the front. I was told by the dealer when took it in for a recall that it would cost about $1200 because they would have to remove the entire rear and front ends to reseal them. I don't know anything about cars, so I don't even know where to add differential fluid to make sure I'm not grinding the crap out of it. I need to figure THAT out at least... This is a serious issue that's costing Explorer owners serious cash, and Ford really needs to take responsibility for this. This, regrettably, is my second Explorer, and will be my last Ford. I had a lot of stupid little problems with the first one, and ended up with the second one because I was being offered a good deal when I had to make a quick decision. I went another year on the tires and at 55,000 I put new tires on. New tires but same noise. Same thing.. Dealer says I put wrong tires on!!! So I decided to look at the rear wheel bearings myself. To make a long story short the rear end is making the noise. It appears to be leaking out the drivers side seal for a long time but when I check the fluid it wasn't low. I have 80,000 miles on now and I know the rear end is about to fail. I've also had problems with front wheel bearings and transmission noise. Engine has been good however. If Ford doesn't make this rear end right for me they will have lost a lot of future buyers!!

OK, I'm no mechanic, but I will tell you what I remember the mechanic saying. The bolt broke on a piece of metal holding the pinion in place. We were going down the interstate, 70 MPH, the speed limit. All of a sudden we heard a noise. Hubby thought it might be a flat tire. We pull off on the shoulder and hubby looks around. No flat. We call AAA and get a tow to our local mechanic. He looks and discovers our parking brake shoe, yes, parking brake shoe, has fallen off. He replaces it, $130. He drives it out, and still hears the noise. He suspects the rear end. He cannot fix that type of problem. We take it to our other mechanic. It takes a week to get the lengthy repair done, to get it fit into his schedule. After the repair is done, ($885) the ABS brake system kicks in whenever we stop. The pedal thumps! We take it back and he says when the pinion was damaged, that also ruined the speed sensor in the rear end. He fixed it for free, feeling sorry for us that we had two expensive car repairs on our Fords within 2 days. The mechanic said if we had driven much longer with that problem, the car could have seized (my words), the car stopped and "thrown us through the windshield." (Yes, we wear seatbelts.)

Ok... only after I purchased my 2002 Explorer I found out that 02 was the worst year ever for this vehicle, now I know why.
An annoying noise from the rear end that sounded like a problem with the rotors, ended up being a differential problem that cost $1,000.00 to repair. After spending some time on the internet researching, I found several people with the same problem, all 02 and 03 Explorers... so I contacted Ford that simply replied saying that they were aware of the problem, but since the Dept. of Hwy Safety didn't find it life threatening Ford decided a recall was not necessary. My vehicle is only 47k miles, I shouldn't have to fix the differencial at this point, and IT IS dengerous, the back wheels could lock while the car is running.
I also had to replace the gas gauge sensor, and repair the transmission because it jumped from 1st to 2nd.
I THINK THAT ALL OF YOU 02/03 FORD EXPLORER OWNERS SHOULD JOIN ME ON A LAW SUIT AGAINST FORD!!!

With the miles on my Explorer I felt I was in need of new brakes and dropped off my vehicle at Midas. I was contacted by the mechanic that afternoon and was advised "Sir, I'm happy to report that your brakes are in excellent condition. However, I'm sorry to be the bearer of very bad news. Your rear differential seals are bad and leaking and the differential is close to "falling off" of your vehicle." He further states he has been an authorized mechanic for 25 yrs and feels this is an inherent flaw from Ford as this is not the first one he has seen and that I proceed to the nearest Ford service dept for them to correct this dangerous "safety issue." The mechanic also gave me a copy of the TSB from Ford. I called a local Ford service dept the same day in a state of panic! A service manager assured me that not only was the mechanic who alerted me of this "flaw" not authorized by Ford, but he was only over-reacting. I took my Explorer in today with the notice by Midas and it was only discounted as being a "service bulletin for technicians." I paid $55 for them to run the same tests as Midas had done, was told by the service manager "The right rear bearing needs replacing, the seals of the differential needs are bad and leaking and need replacing, there was no recall on your vehicle, you're out of warranty and the repairs would be $700+ and service should be done very soon as the damage will worsen." No one at the dealer would admit that there has been problems. I declined the repairs, advised the service manager I would be calling my attorney for further instruction. I have discovered that there are a numerous amount of people who have complained about this very issue on another website (www.safercar. gov). He told us that there was no problem with the brakes, but that we were getting ready to lose our back end. He said he had seen this in other ford vehicles, but that it was not part of a recall. It was what Ford calls a "revision", one step below a recall. In other words, they know it is a problem, but the consumer has to pay to have it repaired. We really feel that this should be addressed by Ford as a recall. If you've had the same problem, please let me know.

Further investigation would make one believe it was from the rear differential. The brakes were checked and although the front are worn the back seem fine and would not cause that noise. Talked to the Ford dealership where I purchased the vehicle and was estimated $1000 - $1500 for repairs. He told me it could be a side ir pinion bearing . I'm a first time owner of a 02 explorer which was purchased from an official ford dealership. The vehicle was used with 27k miles, with one owner. Only months later, did I notice transmission problems. i. e. Slipping and lunging into rear and/or drive. The dealership (only under limited warranty mended the problem at their expense)... months elapse and the problem returned in which the dealership wouldn't pay for 2nd repair. My cost $2k for tranny repairs....
Currently, my SUV has 125k miles and acquired a familiar humming noise (a noise that 02 explorer owners hear so well). This noise is very prominent at coasting and accelerating highway speeds. This noise is not from brakes, wheels, etc. I had those details check and replaced.... from reading several and numerous post over the entire web, i realize that I'm not alone.
My real problem wasn't the transmission... it's the rear differential!!! I'm taking the replacement route into my own hands. I'm asking for 02 Explorer owners for your experiences replacing a rear differential. I'm going to locate and replace the rear differential through a university mechanics shop. This option appears to be the most economical route....

When placing the truck into reverse there is a clanging noise ( this noise sounds like it is in the transmission, it is just when your transmission is shifting the gear into reverse ). This noise is only at the shift and it makes me wander but it does not scare me to bad. I think it might be just a loud shifter ( I hope ). Then when backing backwards ( mostly up hill ) the front end makes a clanging noise if the truck is on slippery ground. Only if the wheels are slipping and even if it is in four wheel drive does this noise happen. So I try to go slow without slipping because the more the truck slips the more noise comes from what sounds to be in the front drivetrain. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

Instead of paying Ford the outrageous lease buyout since our driving has been considerably reduced, I shopped around and found an 02 Explorer private party one owner in what seemed to be Great condition. Owner had all service records done at Dealership totaling over $6500 including $1200 deductible paid when the dealer agreed to warranty his failed tranny at 74970 miles. Thought I was getting an OK deal until on the way home the famous "rear end noise" started coming from what sounds like the RR wheel area. Noise increases under load and decreases during coast worse 50-65 mph. After reading all the issues all over the net and hearing horror stories of multiple rear end/bearing/seal replacements on the same vehicles I really wish I could unload this tomorrow! Then i bought it and replaced it myself instead of letting ford touch it. And for the people out there with the rear noise i am glad to inform you all that is needed is a little bottle of differential additive :) all it cost is about $12 at the auto store. The "Growling" and "Whining" began at about 45,000 miles and became so bad that I had to take it in. After three different opinions from 3 different mechanics it was determined that the best way to get rid of the problem was to replace the rear differential. We started with one from a salvage yard from an '03 Explorer with approximately 40,000 miles on it. Same EXACT problem. It was exactly the same as before the changeout. So, we tried another salvage yard differential. Same crap again! Okay, now we have to come to the realization that if the part came from the salvage yard it was probably junk. So then, we decided to spend additional dollars and go for a remanufactured differential. Gotta work, right? WRONG! It's the same goddam noise! It starts at around 40mph and really whines at 55-65.
I'm fed up! I'm seriously thinking about starting a class-action lawsuit against Ford. I have read HUNDREDS of posts on various websites regarding this problem and I have yet to see Ford do anything about it past the 3/36 warranty period. Even when they do, the problem comes back! This is absolutely not acceptable! I have never had a rear-end that was so troublesome... ever!
I take great care of all of my cars and this Explorer has been babied from day one. I change the oil every 3000 miles, new coolent every 25,000 miles, well, you know the drill. If the problem would have gone away after the first fix I would be so damn mad. But c'mon. Even a remanufactured unit should sound as good as it did the day the car rolled out of the factory.
In talking to the owner of the shop where the "repairs" have been done, he tell me that he's had quite a few 2002-2004 Explorers in his shop lately (for other things) and they all sound loud from the rear-end! It's apparent that these owners aren't noticing the increased noise coming from their Explorers, or they just don't want to spend the money to get it fixed.
If there's a good lawyer out there that wants to go for Ford's throat on this, let me know. I'm sooooo ready!

So irritated with my Ford!! I have wanted a SUV for a long time, I liked the Ford Explorer particularly, I've had a Ford F150 in the past that was a awsome truck, so I figured I would have good luck with that again. I WAS WRONG!! I bought my Explorer not even 3 wks ago and it is in the shop with rear differential problems and timing chain tensioner problems.... I've read enough on this site and other sites to know that there are LOTS of people with the same problem... Someone said on here that Ford has obviously got a problem with their drive train - this makes the damn thing work, you have problems here, and you are in trouble!! Not only do these problems put your truck out of comission, it puts LOTS of money out of your pocket - obviously I'm not rich, or I would have bought a new Lexus SUV instead of a used Ford. This is the thing, there are no recalls on the drive train, but, from everything I have read, there should be. If you would go to this site and post your complaints, maybe we can get Ford backed into a corner where they have to acknowledge these problems... I know that there are a few people on here that have done this already, but, unfortunately just a few of us can't get much accomplished. Please take 5 min - no more time than it took you to post your problems on here - and go to www.safercar.gov and place a complaint on their site, if we ALL do this, maybe we can get something done. In the mean time we are all screwed with crappy drive trains that are repeatedly breaking and causing us costly problems!! This sucks, I'm so damn disappointed that I don't know what to do!! Please help me make Ford do something about this!!!
