CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Honda refuses to replace recalled airbags. I've been trying for a year and even when they "order" the part they don't have it when I arrive. This has happened repeatedly. I was in a car accident today and the airbags didn't deploy and they should have. After reading all the online complaints I feel lucky they didn't deploy and extract flying metal pieces. Its inexcusable to have a recall and then refuse to fix the problem. Honda's negligence could have cost me my life today. * (RECALL RELATED INCIDENT)

I was in a bad accident I was in the far right lane on the highway I'm going 55mph someone jumped in front of me I used my breaks then my car jerked right into the other person car causing my car to spin around 2 time on a 6 lane highway. The airbag never deployed the staring wheel was not turning lots of fluids leaking out of it but it was always jerking for some reason even when the mechanic says that's natural..

I received a letter from Honda early this year reporting that the airbags in the 1998 Accord are not safe and must be replaced. After multiple calls to them to schedule the repair all they tell me is that the parts needed are not available. I depend on this car to get me to work each day and cannot stop using it. What other options do I have?

I am filing a safety complaint because it has been 7 months since I was notified of the safety recall on my 98 Honda Accord. The recall listed the risks as including serious injury or death if the airbag does not deploy or deploys and expels metal fragments. There is still no replacement parts or updates about when the replacement parts will be available. I am concerned for my safety when driving my vehicle and am requesting an update for all those who have the same recall notice before an incident happens.
