CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Car has intermittent stalling issues while driving. Car has been serviced in leesburg Honda, only known thru carfax report. Leesburg Honda could not verify if ignition switch was repaired from recall status. Verification came from charlottesville brown's Honda that switch was replaced but not by who. Told if key was shook while running and car stalled then it was ignition switch. Car still persists intermittently in shutting off with no warning signs. Sometimes, after stall, it takes several turns of key to finally get car started. Stalling can happen at any time and has in fast lanes of highways making car a little hard to steer of the road. Only hazard lights work to send warning sign of car trouble.

My honda1999 barley has 79,000 on it, im second owner. I bought it when it had only 37,000 mil. On it. The car is already having transmission problems. It jerks when driving and coming to a stop, like a pop jerky feel. My cooling system had problem in 2010 oil going into my radiator. And know I have electrical problem. The car at times would go off. 79,000 I cant believe it. You would think this my car was a Ford with their older modules. Known to have engine problems after 70,000. This is crazy. I have all papers from first owner, never realized till reaching the chaos of my engine. That my car as well was a recall. I have the documents.

My wife was in drive-thru at mcdonald's when the engine died suddenly. She was able to started back up right away by turning the ignition off and on to crank the engine. Later around 1pm on the same day, while driving on hwy 101 at 65 mph, the engine died suddenly, the 'key in ignition warning' came on that warns the driver not to forget to take the key out before leaving the vehicle. The car coasted with engine dead just a short distance and the engine started up again. The car ran fine after that until my wife got home. I googled '1999 Honda Accord engine shut off while driving' and found a dozen other drivers had posted about the similar problem with their Honda Accord. I found that the ignition switch is the cause of engine shut-off and there's Honda recall on them. The car had a problem with the ignition switch in November 2006 at 135,500 miles. While driving on the freeway, smoke came out of the steering column and the car started jerking. The ignition switch was replaced at a dealer after having the car towed there.

While driving down the high way, my car just turned off and had to pull over the right side of the road. Luckily it was not busy, but it has been happening a lot lately. That means I don't have a car. I looked online and they have a faulty ignition switch. At first I changed the main relay to a brand new one from Honda. But it still did the same thing, till it didn't start again.

Honda needs to recall their recall of the ignition switch. At their suggestion I had the ignition switch replaced several years ago when it was not a problem. Just recently I had a problem with their replacement and had to have it replaced again. Why was the original switch a safety concern in their eyes but their defective replacement switch is not a safety concern. I feel they should be held accountable for the failure of their replacement switch.
