CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Honda Accord suffers from transmission failure. It's not a huge widesperad problem like in prior years, but definitely still something to consider.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.

Accord 3.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

The Transmission of my Honda Accord 3L V6 failed me while at work. The car was not able to move. After stopping for a short time say 5-10 minutes, I could continue but the problem of the car ceasing to go forward developed again. I am not able to drive the car for any period of time.

I was made aware that it is well known that the transmission in the 2005 Honda Accord 3L V6 too small for the corresponding 3L V6 engine and that Honda is aware of this.

Please I would like to be compensated by having the correct transmission replacing this one which is currently attached to the engine and now being reoprted as non-functional.

Accord EX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,500 miles

On Tuesday my car starting making strange noises and bucking occasionally when I came to a stop. I thought it seemed a little strange but didn't think too much of it, maybe bad gas. On Wednesday it seemed a little bit more noticeable and more frequent, I planned on taking it in on Saturday when I had time to have it looked at.Thursday on my ride to work at a stop light it completely stalled. It started back up fine but as soon as I shifted it into gear it stalled. I repeated this a few times and finally I was able to get it to move. I pulled into the closest parking lot because I was afraid to drive any further. Once I stopped in the lot it stalled again. I started it about 10 times and every time I shifted into any gear (1,2,3,D,R) it stalled. I had it towed to the shop and they said the transmission needs to be replaced. I am furious I still owe $7,000 on my loan and it looks like it is going to cost me $3,500 to fix. I got a Honda because I thought they were supposed to be reliable. For a transmission to go with under 100k is insane to me. I am going to call Honda on Monday to see if they will do anything to help with the cost.

Update from Jul 15, 2011: I contacted Honda Corporate and they were suprisingly very helpful and apologetic. I can't say the same about the local Honda dealership who tried to talk me into just trading my car in for a car on their lot by telling me my motor was probably bad too, which is not true at all. The estimate for the repairs is $3,400 and Honda offered to pay $1,700 (50%). I tried to get them to pay more but they explained that they look at how far out of warranty the car is (which I am 3 years and 60,000 miles out of warranty). Which is understandable, so the dealership is fixing my car and I will "only" need to pay them $1,700 and the rest will be paid by Honda. I'm still a little in shock that my Honda Accord blew a transmission at 95,000 miles but atleast Honda was good enough to help out with the repairs I doubt any other companies would do the same.

Accord EX V6

  • 80,200 miles

bought a 2005 Honda Accord EXL V6 BRAND NEW knowing I could drive this car for many, many years (this is my 4th Honda by the way). In Oct 2009 I needed brakes and an 02 censor-OK normal I suppose. Sept 2010 another 02 censor, whatever had a friend put it in-cheap fix. Then Oct. 2010 the power steering pump AND the CD player went bad, EH OK move on. In April 2011 the starter- yeah OK, guess it's about time...1 week later the battery is dead-RATS! Another week (seriously, 1 week) and guess what, the valve gasket and 2 valve covers blew, OMG-this IS really happening?!! On to May 2011, the power steering high pressure hose and bracket AND 2 engine mounts, WHAT REALLY?! OH, Also in May the map light shorted out, Honda wants 140 to fix? crap. And then onto June 2011... I need a transmission, WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!! This is a honda problem and they need to "HONDA UP" and fix at least the transmission. I AM IN COMPLETE AND UTTER SHOCK!!! This car has been lady driven, carport kept and serviced every 3,500 miles. I am about to have the Transmission rebuilt for 2,500 because I have no other choice! When I bought this car, the salesperson said to me, this engine will last you 300k miles, well maybe the engine will but everything else on the car has broken!!! :(((((( Honda just ain't what it used to be, that's for sure!!! would love to be included in a class action suit over the transmission, please contact me if you hear of one!!!

Update from Jul 20, 2011: July 2 back on the road after transmission has been rebuilt and no air, another 430.00 Valve and hose (top side) when will it end?!

Update from Dec 22, 2011: More and more honda issues, need struts at 82k miles now main req light is on car is running rough but its not time for any aiy or even an oil change ...headed to shop again next week. IF ANYONE HAS A NUMBER AND NAME AT HONDA FOR ME TO CALL PLEASE SEND IT TO ME PLEASE THIS IS TOO MUCH!!!

Complete automatic transmission failure on the freeway at about 65 MPH. Just a few not very strong words convinced Honda to reduce cost of replacement to $1800 from $4400. They said there have been just a few complaints about this problem but my study of the internet indicates otherwise. If YOU have had this problem let HONDA know you are as mad as h*** and you are not going to take it anymore. Honda seems to have had problems with their transmissions for the past 10 years. Complain, complain, complain!

I own(ed) 3 Honda models, and was a Honda fan, but this problem has made me reconsider all future purchases! I was only 1000 miles above the warranty mileage allowance when this problem started and all Honda can afford to give me was a 50% discount on the cost of replacing the transmission, -a hell-of-a-note for a car that has a reputation for being trouble free. I feel that Honda should have fixed my car at no cost!

Accord EX V6

  • 66,000 miles

Irate and outraged is how I feel about the transmission failure of our 2005 Honda Accord. Transmission failure at 66k miles is utterly unbelievable. This is a Honda after-all, and when we purchased it car issues seemed so distant and something that only happened to Ford owners.

The shop told us the cost to replace the transmission would be in the range of $5,000. We contacted Honda and they've offered to foot some of the bill. However, it still doesn't seem right. We're a few thousand miles past the warranty and we purchased the Honda because of its reputation for reliability and dependability.

We have been scouring the internet for some answers and have come to realize that Honda has been having issues with transmissions since the early 2000's with a recall in 2004. There is no doubt in my mind that my transmission is a continuing problem that Honda refuses to acknowledge due to potential liability and damage to their reputation.

It seems they've learned nothing from the Toyota debacle. We were lucky that the transmission gave out in the city and not while traveling at 65 on the highway. Honda should own up to their transmission defects instead of continuing to sell a product they know is dangerous and hoping the warranty runs out before they have to foot the bill.

I will never purchase another Honda!

It's a 2005 Honda Accord with only 66k miles on it. The farthest thing from our minds was a transmission failure when we purchased it. Especially since Honda's are generally known for their reliability and dependability.

The transmission failed on my drive home from work. I am grateful that it did not occur on the highway as I am aware of many near misses and the potential for dangerous outcomes occurring from transmission failures at high speeds.

Honda has been experiencing transmission issues since the early 2000's. We were only made aware of their continuing issues along with their recall of 2004 Accords while trying to find answers online. There is no doubt in my mind that Honda is knowingly continuing to sell a defective product and hoping the warranties run out prior to any issues surfacing so they don't have to foot the bill. It looks like they have not learned a lesson from the Toyota debacle.

I will never purchase another Honda again!

I was totally shocked when I found out I had to replace the transmission on my 2005 Honda Accord with only 65K. I bought it because of Honda's great reputation and because the Civic weI bought new for my daughter in 97 got her through high school, college, and was still going when it was wrecked. The worst thing is, I had just paid off the loan on my Accord one month before my transmission went out. Repair costs will be $3700.00 when I reluctantly pick it up from the dealer tomorrow. I do get many compliments on my car and I always say, "its a great car" now I will say "don't buy one!" I think Honda is greatly under estimating the value of a satisfied customer and the ability of a dissatisfied customer to "spread the word."

Accord V-6

Car died on the freeway. Transmission fluid leaking out. Had to be towed 15 miles to nearest dealer. While waiting for diagnostics, decided to research on the internet Honda Accord transmission problems. Found out several years 2000-2003 all were known transmission defects. Repair of transmission was going to cost $5800 by the dealer plus the cost of a car rental since it happened on a trip out of town. The Honda website suggested we ask for a Good Will adjustment. When I asked the service manager about this he stated he would have to contact Honda customer service. After several more minutes he came back and stated we would pay $1000 and Honda would pay the rest.

I still don't have the car back. We have to wait to locate a transmission.

I have heard a lot of complaints about the 2003 model of this car but now the same problem has happened to me on my 2005 honda accord ex v6. I was driving on the highway at 65mph when all of a sudden it slipped out of gear like i was in neutral...next thing I know it violently down shifts to 2nd gear almost causing me to be rear ended!!..thank god the person driving behind me was aware of who was driving infront of him or I would have been in a major car accident! from that point on the transmission never shifted right and the same thing happened to me when taking the car to honda the next day! This is not the first time I have had to deal with honda and faulty transmissions!!! Its become quite a joke! I had a transmission failure on my 2002 honda accord v6 a few years ago and the car had only 75k on it. Honda paid half...but i still had to come out of pocket $2000! Now honda has told me the transmission on my 2005 is dead at 95k and the cost to replace is over $4000!!! You would think with all the problems they have had with transmissions in the past they would have fixed the problem but its clear they have not!! they only seem to want to cover up the problem as long as they can so they don't have to be responsible for the trash they are selling! It is clear that they have not fixed the problem on the 2003 or any of the other models...if it was fixed we all wouldn't be having the same EXACT problem!! The dealer tried to put the blame on me by saying I didn't service the car right!?!?! is that a joke? if you open the car manual it says...."under normal driving conditions change trans oil at 120k or 6 years" I commute to queens ny to westchester everyday....i don't tow anything...i don't drive up and down hills...i don't sit in stop and go traffic...i drive in normal conditions!! to think that the transmission would again fail is a joke and honda needs to start stepping up and taking responsibility for their crappy transmissions...and in my view its only getting worst and more dangerous!! to think that the car would downshift like that on the freeway should be a crime and a recall should be put into effect for these transmissions!!

I hope more people that are having the same problem step up and let their voice be heard!!! if honda doesn't

step up and do something to help me out with this problem i will make it my lifes work to get the message out to as many people as i can...and with the use of the internet ie..facebook..websites like this i am sure to be heard by MANY!!

My car has 60800 miles on it and is well maintained. But in the past 2 weeks at around 60700 miles, it started stalling intermittently. Took it to the dealer they could reproduce the problem only once so they activated the on-board computer. Within 2 days the stalling was more frequent and eventually it completely stalled. Towed it to the dealer and they said the transmission needs to be replaced and would cost me $3400. I was shocked to say the least. I'm going to call up Honda and see what they have to say about this problem. It's really strange that transmission failures occur for Honda at so low a mileage. I'm definitely not buying a Honda ever and will spread the word about this.

Update from Nov 15, 2010: Called up Honda and they opened up a case for me for goodwill repair. The came back after a few days with an offer to pay 50% of the repair cost ($1700). I agreed. I have to say I was kind of pleasantly surprised. They have a warranty of 36K miles/3 yrs for the transmission. Let's see.

Update from Nov 21, 2010: Honda finally replaced the transmission and paid 50% of the dealer charge. I had to pay $1700. I'm satisfied now, though not that happy about this.

My car has been doing this jerking thing when I drive. I took the car to Crown Honda of Southpoint in Durham NC to have it checked. To my suprise I get a call that states my transmission is failing and I need to replace it and the torque converter. When my husband and I went in to talk to the repair person at the dealership we were told that the torque converter needed to be replace and in the Honda that meant the entire transmission needed to be replaced.

I purchased a Honda because I thought they were good reliable cars. I will be trading my car for a Ford and will never buy auto's made by the people to make the Honda. After researching the situation it has come to my attention that all of the Honda's have been having the same problem. You would think that Honda Corp would have recalled the issues with this problem and fixed them. They know damm well that the transmissions they made are a piece of junk. I have advised everyone that I can against buying a Honda or an Acura.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 46,000 miles

I went in for an oil change and mentioned there was oil leaking in my driveway. After inspecting it, the dealership informed me my transmission was leaking and after a dye test it was determined I needed a new transmission. This is another instance of a very meticulous car owner changing the oil every 3,000 miles and all the mileage interval services. My 5 year warranty ended last month. Thank goodness I took out the 2 year extended warranty which covered the replacement of the new transmission.

I find it disturbing that a well cared for car with 46,000 miles has a transmission failure...pretty ridiculous. I can imagine what my reaction would have been if I tried to get Honda to replace the transmission after my warranty expired a month ago.

Update from Oct 14, 2019: So, after having my transmission replaced at 46,000 miles in 2010-11, it is now 2019. I have logged 210,000 miles and the replaced transmission has now failed once again. I'm not sure how long they are supposed to last but after being a meticulous owner all these years and spending thousands and thousands of dollars on documented repairs on premature brake wear, faded paint, timing belts and a whole host of other engine repairs, I can say with confidence Honda makes the worst cars, at least in 2005 when I bought it new. 210,000 miles might sound like a lot but when you've had to spend so much money to keep it running, it certainly was never worth it. I will now retire my newly repainted Honda to the graveyard of cars and forever stay away from mistakenly buying any Honda vehicle in the future.

I bought this brand new car in 2005 and good maintance on it. For about a month, my car had been acting funny when I came to a stop, periodically. Maybe once a week or so. By acting funny, I mean it did not seem to downshift immediately when I came to a stop, sometimes acting like someone bumped the car from behind barely. Last saturday, around 9 pm right at the stop sign, the transmission locked up and I could not reverse or downshifted. I had to pull the car to the road side. It was towed to the dealer where I purchased it next morning that was sunday and I had to pay $181 for towing. Monday, the dealer ship service called me and said transmission failure and I have to pay $4200 to replace it. I told them how can I bought the brand new car and it was only 67k miles, the transmission failure and I have to pay $4200.....after that they did contact to Honda's Corporate and told me that I have to pay $750 and they will pay the rest. I have no choise so I let them fixed my car. But I would like to say is that why the car's transmisson failth at 67k miles so who will buy the new Honda with the problem like this. It costed me a nightmare to think about that night and I think the Honda's corporate should resposible this problem and I dont have to pay $750 plus $181 towed car only 67k miles driving.

So I have 43K miles on a gently used Honda (my first one). I was having the brakes replaced and they noticed transmission fluid leaking. I've hit every 3K oil change and the car is well maintained.

I'm told the transmission needs rebuilding. I see all kinds of Honda owners with the 2001 to 2002 Class action and also the 2003 issues.

I'm floored that the honda I bought to be reliable and low cost of maintenance turns out to be the first car I've ever had to have transmission work done on.

I'll be calling Honda of America like many others and requested reimbursement.

Bought this car lightly used from the dealer at which it was originally sold and always taken to for maintenance. Car had 18,000 miles when I bought it in early 2008 and was in great condition. Now with 49K miles on it and still in otherwise great condition the tranny dies! I started noticing so lag in shifting a low speeds and just taking it from reverse to drive. Also noticed when passing some at about 70 mph when it downshifted it spun the tires for a second. I thought that was odd and would take in as usual at the next service at the dealership and see if they would check it out. Three days after I first noticed this, driving home and took a short cut through "dump road" (a place where it is not entirely uncommon to find a body) and got on the gas a little and made to about 50 when I started slipping gears. It will drive in first, second, and reverse for anywhere from 20 to 100ft before completely dying now. I know one thing for sure... That extended warranty just paid for itself.
