CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Nissan Altima has multiple problem trends including the CVT transmission, and now that this model is out of warranty, it earns our "Avoid Like The Plague" badge.

Owners complain about vibration and transmission failure related to the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), a whining noise from the power steering pump, and constant windshield problems that appear to be the result of poor design.

Be warned: the 2014 & 2015 Nissan Altima appears to share these same problems.

Dealer is allowing me to trade the car, but it's going to cost me about $3000. I have had 4 Nissans and I really feel screwed. They lost me as a customer.

Well I purchased this car new in January. I noticed about a week after buying it that there was an annoying sound coming from the engine compartment. When I dropped my car off for issues that i have noticed while driving this vehicle. So I told them about this noise they had my car for half a day(after having 12 problems listed) and told me that the noise was normal and there is nothing they can do, I did not believe them and took it back a week later because of how bad this noise is. Again they told me this is a normal sound. All of my years driving if you hear a noise like this something is going to break or go wrong. Nissan needs to step up and fix these KNOWN problems. this is my first and will be my last nissan if they do not fix the issues. I have waiting 9 years to purchase a new vehicle hoping that they would have reliable vehicles.

After several complaints regarding a high pitched whine , DTS Kevin Burkett (Regional Office) and Service Advisor, Joe Dayton found a solution at Wallace Nissan, Stuart FL.

I quote from the 9/9/12 R.O: "Found high side A/C line touching P/S housing causing noise. Insulated line with foam tape. Noise was still there. Swapped P/S pump from known good vehicle. Noise was still there. Found that noise was traveling through P/S bracket at R/F strut tower. Removed bracket and noise was gone. Insulated bracket with rubber tubing and rechecked. Noise is gone at this time".

Even though several Nissan 2013 Altima forums talk about the incessant whine from the power steering pump, the local dealer "never heard of it". Bring it in for "service" and we will take a look at it was his suggestion.

We bought a brand new 2013 Altima. After 6-7 days of driving, we started to hear a squeaky "keeeeeeeeeee" whining noise from the right side of the hood (front-passenger side). It has gone loud by now and you can hear it clearly when the car is being driven in the city, less than 25 miles per hour. You don't hear it on the Freeways, perhaps due to other sounds in the environment.

I got it seen from the dealer and we have been told that starting 2013 Altima models, Nissan has put in new Power Steering module to increase the efficiency of the car and get better mileage.

However, so far there is no fix. The service technician at Nissan asked me to put the fan speed at High before driving the car. This is silly!

Especially, during the night and quite mornings, you can hear it very loud and it is really annoying. I am sincerely hoping Nissan will recall these Power Steering pumps.

Nissan reports that they know about this loud, annoying hum and that they are receiving complaints from drivers, but there is no way to fix it. Sub-par engineering.

I bought my Altima 2013 just last week and the day after I bought the vehicle I noticed an annoying whistling sound which seems to come from either the front or the inside of the vehicle. Following the annoying noise, I also noticed a knocking sound from the rear of the vehicle when I pump on the brakes. I took it to the dealership and was told that the whistling sound is coming from the power steering that is driven by an electric motor that turns the pump instead of being driven by a belt from the engine and that the noise is normal. OK???? The rear knocking noise was apparently coming from the shock suspension?????? Last night, when I drove the car the knocking noise was so loud that it scared me. Thought something fell off of my vehicle. Brought it again to the same dealership and was told now that there may be a defect of some sort. Of course, they couldn't tell me the exact problem. The appointment will be for next week and they need to keep the car for a couple of days. This has been a disaster almost to the point of not wanting the car. The whole reason why I purchased a new vehicle is so that I wouldn't have to worry about any type of mechanical problems and now, I"m finding myself annoyed with the whistling noise and having to go back and forth the dealership losing time at work on trying to get this freaking noises resolved.. Any advice? I've been a loyal Nissan customer and now, I'm wondering if I should've just looked at Toyota to compare.
