The transmission would not shift out of park. For several weeks we had to use the shift lock release to get the car out of park. After doing some of my own research I was able to figure out the brake light switch was defective. When the brakes are depressed prior to shifting the switch sends a signal to a relay releasing the lock on the shifter so it can be taken out of park. To check if this is the problem depress the brake pedal and the brake lights should come on. If not replace the switch. It is located on the brake pedal and costs $10-$20 for the part. No tools needed for replacement.
