The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the rear passenger-€™s side TPMS warning light was illuminated. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the inside section of the rear passengers-€™ side wheel had cracked causing air to leak out the tire. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the wheel and the failure was remedied. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred on two similar vehicles he owns. The failure mileage was 18,000.

Dec 202019

I purchased my vehicle in December of 2017. Around December 2019, my left rear wheel started to lose air. I assumed that the tire needed to be repaired or replaced. I took my vehicle to a tire shop and they could not find anything wrong with the tire. After further investigation, a hair-line crack was discovered in the wheel. There was no indication of an impact, or damage on the surface of the wheel, on the inside the wheel or even on the outside of the wheel and they are not bent or scratched anywhere on the rim. My car was still under warranty, so I took the vehicle to my local dealership and General Motors refused to replace the wheel on my vehicle. I called General Motors myself and filed a complaint and to appeal their decision not to replace my wheel. After repeated attempts, General Motors still refused to replace the wheel on my vehicle. My vehicle is no longer under warranty and two additional wheels now have the same issue, one will no longer hold any air. I cannot drive my vehicle until my rims are replaced. I ordered a new set for $3K at my expense. Please note, that I have not been in an accident, nor is there any damage on the surface of the wheel. There must be a manufacturing or design defect...I keep the vehicle in my garage, it's pampered and gets driven less than 7K miles per year in sunny Florida where there are no pot holes or terrible road conditions; everything is flat and smooth. I became aware that there are thousands of complaints of this exact issue while reading the Corvette forum for these rims. There is potentially a horrible risk to someones life is this issue isn't corrected for some unknowing victim. Please investigate the issue with these rims and force GM to issue a safety recal for this safety issue. I believe that there are thousands of unsuspecting drivers that have the same issue with thier vehicle that are unaware of this deadly safety hazard. Please help Corvette owners driving safety, even if GM refuses to do so!

I drive my corvette about 3000 miles per year, no highway, never in the rain. I took my GS in for new tires and was informed the driver side rear wheel was cracked and leaking air. I have never hit a bump, drove it on a track, drove on deflated tires etc. Makes no sense the rim would be cracked.

March of 2019: I had unexpected flat tires, one front and one rear. There was no warning nor reason to suspect any damage. Took the car to the shop and had cracked wheels. As most Corvette owners, I pamper this car and would know/remember hitting anything. I replaced the wheels at my expense after getting no help from the Chevrolet dealer. The attached photo shows there was no impact- just a big crack. December 2021: I have one unexpected rear flat tire. Found another crack. Unexpected flat tires without warning is an obvious safety concern for me and anyone around me as I drive. After looking on the internet, there are 100's of complaints about this and multiple class-action lawsuits. This should be forced to be a recall and the government should step in. I am surprised that this has reached this point, as a risk analysis engineer. The field complaints have reached a point where the occurrence rate and the severity of the failure should flag action. Earlier in my career, I designed and tested wheels as a tier 1 supplier to GM. I know how GM Tire and Wheel operate. There are specs for impact and fatigue testing and I bet the poor design is very well understood. I hope you can help.

This is a common problem with the OEM wheels bent that precludes proper and unsafe use. Tire inflation and balance along with vibrations are a major safety concern. I would like GM to do a recall on these wheels and help the owners for replacements with a forged aluminum wheel as opposed to the engineering mistakes made using a cast alluminum wheel.

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO COMPLAINT 11432856 RE: WHEEL CRACKING. i HAVE LEARNED THAT GM HAS MADE AVAILABLE A PARAMETER UPDATE TO SOFTEN THE MAGNETIC RIDE CONTROL ON THIS MODEL (AUSTENSIBLY TO SOFTEN THE SUSPENSION WHICH WILL POSSIBLY CAUSE FEWER WHEELS TO CRACK EVEN THOUGH THEY DONT ADMIT TO HAVING A PROBLEM). BUT THEY HAVE THE GALL TO CHARGE ABOUT $450 TO PROVIDE, DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS BY THE DEALER. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT OVER $400 GETTING 2 WHEELS REPAIRED AND NOW THEY WANT TO MAKE MONEY TO LESSEN THE IMPACT OF A DEFECT. BY CHARGING $450 TO THE CUSTOMER WITH THE DEFECT. THAT IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

On the evening of October 9, 2020, the air bag on my 2017 Corvette Z06 unexpectly deployed without any warning in my face blocking my view while driving downhill around 45 miles per hour and without me striking any object on the two-lane highway. I believe the right front wheel was defective and broke puncturing the right front tire that caused the right front suspension and frame rails to strike the road surface and break the right front suspension in two that caused me to lose control of the steering and strike the hillside along the two-lane road causing over $38,854 worth of damage to my Corvette that grew to $44,000. My Corvette had never been previously involved in any accidents whatsoever. There is a class action law suit proceeding through the courts now against General Motors related to Corvette wheels cracking and causing damage to Corvette owners tires and cars in varying degrees. Esis who represents General Motors, investigated my defects claim and after General Motors received and reviewed my documentation and photos about the unexpected air bag deployment, suspected wheel and suspension defects they stated that no defects exist. I have attached photos and have the right front cracked wheel, punctured tire and broken suspension components in storage for examination to assist in determining the cause of the suspected defects as stated. The unexpected air bag deployment, cracked wheel and suspension failure caused me to strike the hillside and could also have caused me to collide and strike oncoming motorists causing property damage, personal injury and possible death to me and other motorists..

Add me to the long list of people that have cracked aluminum corvette wheels. I purchased used Aug 11, 2021 without defects being known. After getting a repair on a slow leak puncture by removing the wheel/tire and taking to shop, I was told I have 3 cracks in the inside flange of the 20 inch rear wheel. Upon returning home, I examined the other 3 wheels. The other 20 inch rear also has 3 cracks. Come on NHTSA, dont let GM give you the bull on this about it being potholes. Get a metallurgist on the case and go after both GM and the wheel mfr. Date below was when I learned of the condition.

My left rear wheel developed a crack. Luckily I noticed this quickly, or a catastrophic failure could have occurred leading to loss of vehicle control and potential crash. These failures are well documented on the web, with 100's of owners experiencing the same failure. GM made a poor engineering/cost decision when deciding to use cast wheels on a high performance car with a large drum overhang and stiff low profile tires. Forged wheels are much stronger and should have used in this application. A GM dealership has looked at the problem and did contact GM. As with all the other cases, they refuse to take responsibility. Some people have gotten reimbursed for their cost by GM after arbitration via the BBB.

Drivers side rear wheel developed a slow leak. I took the car to my tire dealer and they found a crack on the inner outer edge of the wheel. My research shows a pattern of this problem and a class action lawsuit has been started. My car is considered a super car of speeds in excess of 200 mph. This is a serious safety hazard. What is my best course of action on this dangerous situation?

Passenger rear rim developed a crack at approximately 7k miles. It was replaced / repaired at approximately 40k miles by my local Chevy dealer. My car was repeatedly taken to the dealer for a leaking tire. At 39k+ mile, I was informed by the service department that I had a cracked rim. After several discussion, the dealer agreed to replace the defective rim at no cost to me. Please note! I have a copy of all of my repairs with the exception of the rim replacement. At this time, the dealers hasn't given me one. I am currently waiting for a copy of this repair. The dealers name is: Peter's Chevrolet HWY 259 N. Longview, Tx. 75608
