The transmission started slipping when it was cold outside but would work properly after the engine and tranny warmed up. Took it to the shop and the transmission fluid looked like strawberry milk, indicating water in the tranny. They replaced it with a used one with low miles for $2700.
So, how did water get in? It's a sealed system, so it didn't come from the outside. The shop pressure-tested the radiator and it was fine, so it wasn't that. The only thing I can come up with is that the radiator must have been faulty and was replaced before I bought the car, but the owner either didn't know about the tranny or didn't tell me it was trashed.
I really like the Equinox, even though it has cost quite a bit in repairs. If you get one, DO NOT buy the 2005 model.
