CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Equinox is plagued by a heating problem, as in the heater only blows cold air.

The reported cause of this problem is a small door, known as the air temperature blend door, which allows air to flow past the heater core. This door has a plastic connecting shaft to an electric motor and the shaft is prone to breaking after a few years. The problem has a typical repair cost of over $800.

The 2006 Equinox also has a number of reported problems ranging from the key getting stuck in the ignition, to failing speed sensors, and trouble starting the engine. All in all, this car sounds like one worth avoiding.

it started shaking when the front brakes were applied. we changed the rotor and new brake pads. they didn't last a week. we changed the rotor again and put another pair of brake pads on but this time it got so hot it started smoking and then it caught on fire. the 3rd time we changed the rotor, put on new brake pads and also this time changed the caliper. we took it for a test drive it is shaking again, it smells of getting hot we are afraid of another fire or worse. we cannot drive it very far at all. we are so pissed at this point. Does anyone else have any other ideas what it can be? we did all this within the last 2 weeks. grrrrrr.

Drivers side brakes consistently locked while driving or failed to work at all. Ongoing issue after replacing complete front brakes. (rotors, calipers, pads) The problem became worse AFTER my Equinox was in the shop for exactly 1 month. Vehicle was completely out of commission within 2 months. The replaced rotor was shot, severely grooved calipers, cracked brake pad AND a new problem concerning the ABS system.

This car sucks! lots of problems from day one and can't even trade it cause the value is so low. Have had to replace brakes several times and rotors seem to be marred shortly after being replaced.

Have repeatedly replaced front brake pads and rotors for this piece of crap. I think the problem has something to do with the speed sensor in the wheel hubs, and the ABS system since the ABS is always going off and I was told corrosion on the ABS sensor could cause this, but the ABS repair light has not come on.

Horrible shake in the front end when braking and new brakes and rotors were the suggestion but it never fixed the problem so we just "deal" with it.

bad rotors and brakes from the factory

I purchased this car with 14000 miles on it.. With in 5 months I had to replace the breaks and the rotors, after replacing them they wore very fast within 18 months I replaced breaks 3 times and had the car in 5 other times for the same problem.. In july of 09 my equinox failed to stop due to the brakes slipping and I wrecked. In September 2010 3 months after the 3rd time replacing my breaks the breakline snapped and my equinox flipped and rolled down a hill with me inside it. This car almost cost me my life the local police said that they breaks were never hit and the line snapped right in two.

I'd say every 10 months or so I have had to replace the tires & brakes in this car. It BURNS thru them like nothing I've ever seen!!! My folks mocked me and started to get annoyed with me - as if I was getting unnecessary repairs - but when you're driving around 40 mph - and hit the brakes - hit - NOT SLAM - to slow for a red light - and the entire car pulses... there's something wrong. Brakes & tires are just the start of problems with this car. Owning it has been an absolute nightmare!!

Equinox LX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

I would like to start off by saying that this has been a pain in the ass. I had problems a few months ago the first time and I just figured that they just needed to be turned, but low and behold I had problems again and they turned them again. I have had problems with my brakes 7 times now and the last time they put new rotors, new hub on the front and they also did something with the back drums. This has been so aggravating and I know that there is a LEMON LAW and I am ready to talk to them about this. I wish that someone would have told me before I bought my Equinox that they have been having problems with the brakes and I will be checking before I buy another vehicle from anyone.

Equinox LT V6

After one year of ownership, I started noticing really bad steering wheel vibrations when applying brakes. I had the vehicle checked out at a nearby Chevy dealership. They confirmed that both front rotors were warped and agreed to resurface them under warranty.

For now, the problem appears to have been fixed.

Will keep you posted

Equinox LS V6

During a normal stop the steering wheel would shake moderately. The dealer reported the left front brake pads where already worn past 50% in a little over 15,000 miles... I thought brake pads where supposed to last past 50,000 miles at least!!!!

Dealer said the rotors and brakes were bad from the factory and they would machine them down to fit right. This was unacceptable. I complained enough and they were replaced
