CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Equinox is plagued by a heating problem, as in the heater only blows cold air.

The reported cause of this problem is a small door, known as the air temperature blend door, which allows air to flow past the heater core. This door has a plastic connecting shaft to an electric motor and the shaft is prone to breaking after a few years. The problem has a typical repair cost of over $800.

The 2006 Equinox also has a number of reported problems ranging from the key getting stuck in the ignition, to failing speed sensors, and trouble starting the engine. All in all, this car sounds like one worth avoiding.

We have noticed the ABS and tc lights intermittently light up on the instrument panel upon braking/turning to the left, as well as, when braking/hitting a bump or rough terrain. We have taken to a mechanic to be told they would not be able to fix anything to do with this; that this is a dealership issue. This is a cause for concern due to the fact our 75 year old mother doesn't drive it all the time; however, when she does drive, we are worried for her safety and our children's safety when they're with her. I am shocked GM has not recalled this.

ABS activation at low speeds on dry pavement. This happens randomly and changes the vehicle breaking distance. It is also unknown how much it will change the distance. So it can potentially cause a low speed impact accident. This is due to not knowing where to break for proper stopping distance. Engine problem when starting vehicle. The vehicle turns over then stalls. Only way I have found to prevent it from happening is to press the gas pedal while turning it over. Wiper issue. My passenger side windshield wiper doesn't work. I live in an area where heavy snow fall happens. This is a danger to myself and others on the road. If my vehicle is on the road during a blizzard or heavy snow visibility is lost on half my windshield.

I am submitting information to report a safety complain in regards to a 2006 Chevy Equinox. I have had brakes and brake pedal issues for several months now in both city and highway driving. The issues occur at attempting to stop at stop signs and stop lights. This is the first of any major issue with my vehicle. My issues are break resistance and vibrations. Along with getting my brakes and rotors fixed and/or changed earlier in the year, I started feeling brake vibrations initially. After getting the rotors checked, it happened soon after and "graduated" towards a resistance where I was unable to stop or slow down unless I pumped my breaks repeatedly to release the pedal locking. I recently got my left front speed sensor and hub assembly replaced in hopes it would fix the issue. 3-4 weeks later, the resistances has seem to got a lot stronger/bigger. It has almost caused me several accidents at the stop light and I am now trying to save to get this issue fixed as I was quoted about $2K initially. This is a safety hazard to any vehicle and Equinox that has this issue. I have saved myself from several accidents with quick awareness and action and but I am not sure how lucky others have been. The resistance in the breaks and vibration is very noticeable and continuously happens until the ABS and traction control lights up on the dash board indicating they are deactivated/disabled. This is when braking becomes much easier with little to no resistance and vibrating. Between the speed sensor, hub assembly, I have spent just over $1K in expenses and this will continue to rise with the next repair of wire harness and/or replacement of ABS system in hopes it corrects the issue. Please consider my complaint in hopes of recall to prevent further issues and potential accidents to innocent people.

I have a 2006 Equinox which I bought in 2010. While I had various "of age" repairs, such as fuel system issues and a fan motor; with the age and mileage, they seemed normal. In 2013 I replaced the egr valve and transmission speed sensor simultaneously; as the code was for egr, but would only intermittently kick in the tss code (the car died in the middle of traffic 3 times before I could get the code to stay so we could find the problem). Among looking online for the problem, it was common, but my dealer would not fix without the code. June, 2014, the brakes started pulsating on the car in low speeds. I would have to pump the brakes to get it to stop. Twice, pumping the brakes at an intersection failed, and nearly resulted in a wreck with my daughter in the car. The ABS and tc lights would come on intermittently. I took it to a mechanic: He evaluated each connection and cleaned them, where the ABS harness connects to the main harness. He found no discrepancies. After 2 more months of dangerous driving, and a whole new set of brakes (all 4), online research prevailed once again. This problem was common; and suggested a rather cheap fix. The 18 in wire harness from the wheel speed sensor to the main harness had an issue. Sure enough I, a woman, after being told the dealership didn't carry the part, ordered it online and replaced it in 15 minutes. No problems since then. May, 2015. What appeared to be a thermostat issue ended up being a coolant reservoir problem. The reservoir was broken, where the plastic nipple that comes out the bottom attaches with the hose. After I contacted all parts stores in the area, I was told while it was common for Chevrolet trucks and Equinox vehicles, the Equinox part was no made available to the parts stores. I had to special order online, thank goodness it worked.

We purchased this vehicle used for our college student. We bought this vehicle from seeker Toyota in St. Robert mo. Two days after purchase the. Brake system on the front passenger side locked up. This was supposedly inspected by the dealership. We replaced the calipers, rotors, brakes pads, and thought the problem was fixed, less than 2 months later it locked up again and tried to catch fire. Now have to fix again. The heater stopped working about a week after purchase, the cd player stopped working the day after purchase. We were told there was no warranty after spending nearly $5000 for this vehicle. We feel like we were ripped off and why isn't the brake problems and heat issues not on the recall list.

I have taken my car to tow different GM dealers regarding ABS/traction control issues. I have spent $1000 and the GM technicians cannot correct the issue. They have replaced the wheel sensor & the hub on the front passenger side and nothing seems to work. The ABS system is constantly activating during normal braking/driving and some times interferes with stopping. The vehicle has been for repairs at porter Chevrolet, newark, Delaware and recently nucar connection in new castle, Delaware. The latest repair was done by nucar, the car was at the dealer form August 29 to September 2nd, 2014. The car is a 2006 Equinox VIN [xxx]. I have seen many forums/blogs with Equinox owners experiencing the same issue. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

This vehicle has been difficult to crank, you have to manipulate the steering column, and repeatedly try to crank it. Key is difficult to remove. On Sept 29, 2014, the key came out of ignition while in drive. I reported to GM at 18002221020 at 8am on Sept 30, to, who took details, and said a sr. Service advisor would call me in 24-48 hours. No one did. I called GM back today and spoke to a hispanic man, who said [xxx] is the sr. Advisor assigned but she is not available at this time. I left a voice mail for her. I also contacted riverside Chevrolet in wetumpka Alabama, and was told a service person would call me back. Was on my way to work driving about 25mph at approximately 100 ft from a stop light I lightly tapped my brake. Immediately my anti lock brake came on and the vehicle was still moving at the same speed. I press the brake all the way down to the floor and the car would not stop the brake completely disabled. As I got within about 30 ft of the red light the car stopped and the brake was engaged. It was a dry day the road was smooth there is no reason the anti lock brake should come on. Today 9/9/14 I picked up my daughter from school. As I proceeded to exit the school going about 10mph the antilock brake came on disabling the brake. I press the break all the way down to the floor the vehicle would not stop. I put the car in neutral and it rolled and came to a stop. It's very dry and there is no reason why the anti lock brake should come on. I called General Motors and was told that this car never had any recalls and that my car was out of warranty therefore it's my responsibility to have it repaired. I told the rep that I will report it because this is a serious safety issue.

After stopping when driving longer distances the front left brake would fail to disengage, so that the brake would remain on when trying to drive on interstate. I took it to a dealership to have it checked and discovered that the brake line was collapsing when hot preventing brake fluid to brake. The left one went bad first, but by the time I found out what the problem was I had to have the rotor, caliper and pads all replaced also. After it was replaced everything was great for about 30 days and then the right one started having the same problem. So I had the right brake line replaced immediately and it corrected the problem with no additional costs. We had a very rainy spring so as long as there was water on the road the brake would function properly because the water would keep it cool, but on dry days it would stick. It finally got to the point that it was just stuck all the time no matter what the weather was. It was the first time I had ever heard of a brake line collapsing shut... the vehicle had 69,000 miles on it when purchased it now has 82,000 miles and the starter just started sticking a few days ago when attempting to start it. I still love the way it handles and drives though.

The ABS and traction control dash lights come on. Turning off the engine and restarting it occasionally fixes the problem. After a few weeks the lights become persistent and shutting off and restarting the engine no longer fixes the problem. Sometimes when driving around 10-15 mph, the brakes are extremely difficult to push and stopping the car becomes a frightening experience. I had my mechanic replace the entire ABS hub assembly and that fixed the problem for about a month. The problem has now returned and is worse than before.
