rear main seal and engine blown

On Jan 17th, 2023 around 2pm I tried to drive my car home from work. That morning before I left the house, I had my car started for 15 minutes before leaving with no trouble. It snowed 2 days before and this was my first time driving it since the cold weather hit my area in Central, NJ. There were no problems on the drive to work (which was about a 3 minute commute). When I tried to start my car with autostart as I was leaving work, around 2pm, as I was walking to my car, it started and then after 5 seconds turned itself off. I tried again with no success. I get in my car and I start it manually, then I see that the check engine light was on my dashboard. That was not on this morning when I left for work.

Later that night, I have my friend come to check the car with me, knowing that I had to replace my engine just last year (got my car returned to me March 2023 with a new engine because the rear main valve exploded and I needed a new engine to repair it) and the weather was also cold then. He checked my engine with me and we see that when we check the oil dipstick, it's clean and there is oil in my car. But when we pull the valve on the side, we notice that there is indeed water in my engine and there is orange looking goo that has formed. When we unscrew the cap to check where you put the oil in it, there is also the orange goo there. The air filter is clean and does not have oil in it, as we checked there as well. But water was leaking out of the valve we checked. I don't know how much this is going to cost to fix but I have not had this engine for a full calendar year yet and this problem is happening again. I am livid. I am a full time college student, there is no public transportation where I live, not even Uber, I have no idea what I am going to do if I have to get a new car. I cannot afford a new one. I only bought this one in July 2021. This is awful that this is happening again. Chevy needs to be held responsible. This engine has about 15,500 miles on it with regular oil changes and maintenance on the car, the body of the car has about 116,600 miles on it. This is a brand new engine. Unacceptable.

rear main seal and engine blown rear main seal and engine blown rear main seal and engine blown

I have a 2014 Chevy Equinox. I bought the car used in July 2021 with 74,800 miles on it. By the time this incident occurred, I had roughly 100,100 miles on the car. I live in Central NJ. In the wintertime, it can get very cold outside. Here is an article to further prove my point for the very day that this problem occurred.

https://www.nj.com/weather/2022/12/temperatures-to-stay-frigid-through-christmas-following-storm-nj-records-coldest-day-in-nearly-four-years.html

On Christmas Eve 2022, I was driving about 30 minutes to my friend's house when, on the way, my car started to make a strange noise. Being not the most knowledgeable about my vehicle, I started to worry since this sound was unfamiliar to me. Then, suddenly, the light on the dashboard stated "Low Oil Pressure-- Stop Engine". I immediately pulled over and shut my car off. My check engine light was not on, my oil light was not on, but this message suddenly appeared on my dashboard. My friend was nearby and drove with me to get more oil for the car. I didn't know what was happening. I added an entire quart of oil to my car to help the problem until I could get back home to further investigate. I drive back home and the car is still making strange noises. I end up getting it towed. Come to find out that I need an entire new engine because the rear main valve busted and the engine basically blew up. There was trapped condensation due to a design flaw that, in extremely cold temps water will freeze and will cause pressure to build up.

The cost of a new engine and installation was $7100. I am a full time college student that commutes 40 minutes one way to get to my campus, 5 days a week. I had to borrow multiple people's cars for months before I was able to get my vehicle back. There are many other complains similar to mine, but GM and Chevy do not take responsibility and are not calling for a recall on this engine. I am in so much distress. I just bought this car and there were no problems up until then. I have to drive to get to work and to get to my school, I live in the countryside and there is no public transportation. I don't have access to Uber, even. This problem needs to be resolved and I can't believe Chevy is getting away with this! Other users experiences on this website, their stories, it is like reading my very own. Utterly disappointed and now, in debt, due to this engine design error!

My oil light does not come on, nor does any sensor saying oil is low. It was consuming way too much oil... Drove down the road, and my engine reduced engine power and oil started to spray out from the bottom of car had to get towed. I've come to find out rear main seal was blown... Now I'm carless with kids and no way to go anywhere.

As has happened to many others, the rear mail seal blew, and it lost all the oil and ruined the engine. Check engine light and Stabilitrack lights came on, not the low oil light. Still owed money on it and all it is now is junk. Can't find a used engine because they are all blown up. I hope someone starts a class action lawsuit. Maybe I will. This is a common, known issue. Never buying another Chevy.

Car was perfect until now. Drove car approx. 5 miles. got out of vehicle and went to the back of it to find a long line of oil up to the car. I immediately looked under the front end to find a puddle on my customer's driveway. I had the vehicle towed. The tow company has a full service repair garage. They inspected the vehicle and said this is a "KNOWN" issue of GM and suggested it might be under warranty and recommended it go to the local Chevy dealer. So it was towed there. The local Chevy dealer confirmed that its a "KNOWN" issue with GM. The PCV valve froze due to moisture in the engine which built up pressure and blew the engine rear oil seal. They told me that "MY VIN # was not included in the GM warranty/Bulletin. I have searched and found numerous complaints about the exact same scenario online. They want $1,600.00 to fix it. It was around 18 degrees yesterday when this happened.

I paid off my car in June of 2019. $20,000 is what I bought it for in 2015. I have just under 90000 miles on my vehicle and had only experience minimal issues. My wife and I were married in early February, went on our honeymoon, and I came back to a slight issue with my Equinox. I drove for a couple of days because there was no service engine light on my vehicle. While driving for work, my vehicle just died, I called a tow truck to have it taken to a dealership where they informed me that my rear main seal had been blown and this would require and engine replacement. They want me to pay $8500 to purchase a new engine for the vehicle. I will buy no less than 8 or 9 cars over the course of the rest of my life and I can assure you that not one will be a GM product.

So I have now talked to over 5 people that this has been an issue for. The PVC valve gets water in it, corrodes than blows out the rear main seal of the engine. The car did not tell me to shut it down it said "Engine Power Reduced" it was winter and very cold out I had my pets in the car so I turned around to head back to where I had come from after about 10 miles it said oil is low, shut off car now, which I did!

My car has about 76,600 miles on it, I owe $14,000 on it, always changed the oils, just put $1000 in new tires on it. Took very good care of it. The drive train warrant expired 3 weeks before this happened. Because I drove it after rear seal had blown out it blew the whole motor. I have talked to the better business bureau, they say nothing they will do. I have literally spoken with 5 other people in my area this is a known problem. It happens ALOT to this engine.

I brought it to a GM dealer to diagnose, they want $9000 to replace engine. So I owe $140000 they want $9000.00 to repair. I can't even fathom putting $9000 into it. I no longer trust it, I don't trust GM/Chevrolet or their products anymore. So at this point I am driving a vechicle with over 200,000 miles on it, bought an engine off line, and will have that put in, never drive the piece of crap again, make huge monthly payments to get the amount owed down, and dump it.

I was always a Chevy/GM girl. Now I will scream from the rooftops of how crappy a company they are. They know this is an issue, they know it for sure! I will steer anybody I can away from them. Its all about the money customer loyalty and once the sale is done I am nothing to them, you are nothing to them.
