Radio was working fine. Then I started the car up in the morning - and no sound from radio. The radio screen is on. The volume graph shows up and moves when I turn the volume knob. The channel numbers change when I punch a new button. But no sound. Then I noticed that when I turned on my turn signal, there was no "click-click-click" sound for either direction. The arrow flashes on my display, and the outside turn signals actually work, and the turn signal cancels when the wheel comes back, but no sound. Door open warning sounds are mute, no warning sounds from anything. I'm now guessing that the click sound and all warning sounds are electronically generated, maybe through the radio speaker.

radio not working properly radio not working properly radio not working properly

Over the course of the repair timeline for my 2015 Equinox, the XM component has been replaced, the antennae has been replaced, the wiring has been checked, the service has been disconnected and reconnected and any and all USB connections have been replaced. I have requested diagnostics run from OnStar, XM and the Simpson Chevrolet service department. XM and OnStar have not been able to identify a problem. Simpson detected a ground fault in the navigation system but not in the radio. The service tech suggested that I take a picture of each fail. I have done that. The fail dates in the last month is as follows (screen defaults to XM Preview channel 1 unless specified):

August 21 11:27 AM
August 28 9:48 AM
September 11 12:21 PM
September 15 12:44 PM
September 15 4:23 PM

September 16 2:54 PM (switched the radio to FM when I attempted to text someone from my phone while in a parking lot) September 16 3:33 PM (gave the warning disclaimer screen while I was driving) September 19 5:42 PM (gave the warning disclaimer screen while I was driving) September 20 3:28 PM September 27 12:03 PM September 28 11:12 PM September 29 10:15 AM (calls the Irvine Police Department – phone was not in my hand, both hands on the steering wheel, and IPD was not in my call log so this is so random) October 1 6:44 PM October 7 10:43 AM (directed to “Please see device”) October 7 5:42 PM

My documented service calls (as opposed to my calling the service department and sending screen shots of each of the referenced XM Preview Channel 1 screen fail events to the service department) are as follows:

June 14 R.O. No 16967 Mileage 13992 “Customer states at times when listening to XM will divert to FM radio and XM Preview.” Cause: software updates August 3 R.O. No. 14964 Mileage 14964 “Customer states the XM radio will drop its signal and go into preview mode, customer has had XM resend signal and XM advised it was a probable module, check and advise.” Cause: replaced radio, programmed
September 2 R.O. No. 22349 Mileage 15632 “Customer dates the XM radio will default to preview and that when plugging in an iPhone to auxiliary and shutting off vehicle will default to FM radio, check and advise” Cause: Found b2462. Replaced the radio and navigation antennae. September 12 R.O. No. 23007 Mileage 15776 “Customer states the XM radio will go into preview mode on its own, check and advise.”

I believe at this point the continuing issue was escalated to Engineering by Simpson. I was advised to disconnect and reconnect service. I did that and it failed three days later. Twice. I brought it in to the service department because I refused to speak one more time to XM.

Now they have denied my buyback replacement but it has also been forwarded to the Legal Dept so I'm still hopeful. This is unbelievably ridiculous

Equinox 1LT 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 300 miles

I purchased my new 2015 Chevrolet Equinox with 300 miles on it July 3, 2015. That same weekend I started noticing that the popular radio stations in Madison, WI kept going in and out. I mentioned this to the sales manager and he nonchalantly said “oh you must need a different antenna”. So I scheduled for the service department to look at the radio on my first oil change (3000 miles). They stated that I need to let them know where I was when the radio would go out… This was quite a pain.

I finally brought it back because it started doing it even when I was downtown Madison or even on the interstate. The dealership replaced my antenna. I took the car back and the radio problems continued. So then the dealer replaced the radio. Same issues continued. Then they replaced the new 2015 radio with a new 2016 radio. Exact same issues.

I have contacted GM to no avail as well as the dealership. Last thing I heard was that GM had a bulletin out on the issue and that they were not going to fix this. This is BS! It’s a new vehicle and I’m sorry but FM radio should come in just fine especially with listening the local Madison stations.

So now I guess my case is getting handed over to the “GM Business Department”…. So let’s see how many more miles the dealership can put on my vehicle before fixing it as well as see how many more days they will have it. So far they have put on over 150 miles and have had the car for over 10 days… It’s brand new… Hopefully GM will fix the issue asap!!!

Equinox LT

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,500 miles

I bought my vehicle new. Within 1500 miles the radio started turning itself off and then back on or the screen freezes and no controls work. I took it into the dealer and they told me it was within "GM's norm"...whatever that is. The problem is not stopping. I had them make note on my account but I was basically "dismissed". Is this something "new" with GM? or are other people experiencing this as well? Not happy but don't feel like I have any recourse at this time.

Update from Aug 24, 2015: I have taken my vehicle in and left it and they still don't see the problem. I now call every time it does it. It also has 2 programmed channels that tell me they are not available when I select them and then in about 5 seconds they come on. I am sure this is a GM problem and they have not had enough complaints to do anything about it. I know there is another gentleman bringing his in to the same dealer I am using. I leased this vehicle with the intent of buying but won't be keeping it if they don't resolve this. I will continue to past with updates.
