car shuts off as soon as you can hear the fan kick on running temp completely dies . wont start back up until fully cooled . replaced crank position sensor and mass air flow sensors seeing they were a common problem with the 3800 .don't know where to go next don't want to put more $ into not fixing the problem ... please helppp

This car problem has completely ruined my life! I have lost my job and used up most of the money I had trying to fix it and its still unreliable! I started with my MAF and MAP sensor but was still pulling a code for my MAP sensor. I took it a CHEVY dealership and like a lot of other people on here, was told the car ran fine, no codes were pulled and because of the high mileage( obviously there is other issues w the car) wanted to do a "deeper" diagnostic on it for bout $500! All they could do was SUGGEST what it could be and after reading all these complaints and having already replaced most of the parts everyone else has. I did not want to waste anymore of my money having it at the shop wo guarantee that it could be fixed! A class action lawsuit should DEF be filed for Chevy not wanting to own up to this problem and do a recall. Its pretty sad when a GM mechanic cant even figure out what is wrong! I'm going to try and replace the Crank Shaft Sensor and hope that this fixes the problem but my hopes aren't very high.

Well going down the road with my two beautiful kids running about 55 60mph and the damn thing stalls on me. Everything locks up so no steering,no brakes,nothing. OK i have so many problems out if the car its not funny i have a million complaints and i only see you could do one. I will never buy another CLUNKER ever or ever again. I have looked up recalls for this make and model and every problem is the same a mine and i called to see if it was on the recall list and its not so they can kiss my you know what!

I bought a 2000 chevy impala. the gas gauge has always floated, the turn signals work when they want. lately it has been jerking and wanting to stall as I'm driving down the road. I have put fuel injector cleaner in, I have went to a higher grade of gas, I am on a limited income and don't want to play the guessing game and replace the wrong parts when it comes to figuring it out. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Car stalls while driving at a CONSTANT speed for a period of time. Replaced MAF sensor, MAP, crankshaft sensor, PVC valve and ICM (Ignition control module). Did not fix the problem but car would start every time we cleared the bad codes with the computer! (weird huh) There was a recall on the FPR and I took it in to get that fixed as well...GM mechanics told me the car wouldn't start!!!! and I told them to clear the codes and it would start... They thought I was crazy but they did it and it started right up! They were baffled and had no answer.... so I stopped at Autozone and bought a code reader so when the car stalled on me I could reset codes and get it running again. It has worked so far everytime!!! but no a solution....I will continue to work on answers and will report back if I figure it out. I hope this can help someone temporarily till we solve the real problem.....

Bought this car used, was on three yrs old.. have had it now for 7 yrs or so. Now all of a sudden it wants to die when driving down the road. It started this hesitation like it wasn't getting enough fuel.. it jumps and jerks going down the road.. really annoying. Took it to my mechanic and he put it on his computer because by this time the check engine light has come on.. he said it was the mass airflow sensor.. got a new one not a remanufactured one for 187.00 was only a 20 dollar price difference for that or the remanufactured one.. "Electrical you don't want remand" .. put part in as instructed. It still jumps and jerks and then it runs fine for a little while and it does it again. Took it to another mechanic that also works on them regularly.. he put it on his computer and thought it might be a vacuum leak.. he checked and nothing. Hooked computer to it and he said looked like oxygen sensor is bad.. so i replaced that with a new one. ran good for half a mile and guess what it started it again. Mechanic hasn't had time to check into it anymore but he owns one just like it.. hope he can fix it or at least help diagnose. This is where i am with the car now.. anyone got any ideas on how to repair please let me know.. also the car has a ignition problem.. car starts some times and sometimes not! just want's to run when it feels like it. I found a temp fix online thanks to other owners having same issue and posting. Gosh this car is costly..Don't recommend buying another. Parts alone for ignition problem are over 400 $ at dealer.I'm just running the car back and forth to work which is a short distance, thank gosh, til it won't run no more.. then maybe someone can figure out what the issue is once and forall for all those other folks that are frustrated with there impalas.

If anyone has a fix for the issue listed above, please feel free to tell me.

This is really dangerous. I was at my aunt funeral and while I was driving the car just turned off out of no where. No signs or nothing, I couldn't steer to the side of the road and on top of that I was turning at the arrow and this happened in the middle of the road near a gas station and it was alot of traffic. It had gas in it. I had just put 50.00 dollars cuz I didn't know what or where we was going for the funeral. My family and I could had died that day.

This car has been a really good car for the most part until recently while driving down the interstate this car will just die without warning and then the battery will be completely drained within a matter of 20 minutes. Several hours later and a jump start the car will start right back up and act as though nothing has happened. We have hooked it up to a computer and nothing shows up at all. However up to this point on occasion the car would start jerking while driving down the road and the fuel gauge is now just floating, more concerning is the stalling for no apparent reason any suggestions would be great!

My car was Stalling, dying out of no where, and wouldnt start when it died and wouldnt do it for a mechanic. It spent many a hours trying to be diagnosed. Finally it threw a code one day when it happened and I got it check out at auto zone and found out it needed a Crankshaft position sensor. The part was $25-$30 and labor to change it, I had a friend do it for me.But since then I havent had any problems with it.

We bought this vehicle last fall used but in showroom condition. It rides nice, we love the sun/moon roof and the stylish sporty look. But it nearly killed us as we were going down a very busy highway at 65mph and the engine just died. Of course no power, no power steering, no power brakes....we nearly got rearended to say the least. Garage kept it for 2 wks trying to get a reading on what could be wrong. My husband finally decided he was going to get some answers so he had them hook up the engine with their auto computor and drove it for 2 hrs until the light came on saying the air flow scensor was bad. It was hard to figure out because it would just shut off during random times...and it costs us over $900. 00 to have it fixed right. So if you have this problem have the air flow scensor checked! Chevy makes some beautiful cars, but they need to be more reliable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly this car could have been a death trap.

My car is currently stranded! I am having it towed tomorrow and i can only hope that my shop will know how to fix it. I have had many many issues with my 200 impala and it seems that every single proble i have has many many other impala owners. It isn't very encouraging though...most people end up spending a lot of money just trying to figure out the problem that even the dealership doesn't know how to fix. i can read the complaints and problems and tell you i have had probably 90% of the same issue, some fixed, some not. I hope that my mechanic will tell me it's the crank shaft sensor that fixed most peoples issues...or do I have to tell him to replace it when he can't find anything wrong? I do not think i could buy another GM vehicle after dealing with so many weird issues that no-one knows how to fix!

My Impala stalled a couple of times on me while driving: once at highway speed and the other time in the city. I took it to the dealership where I bought the car, told them the problem and they could not find anything. I did some research on the internet and found this site. It looks like most people replaced the crankshaft position sensor and had some success. Well today my check engine light came on and I took the car to a repair shop that had a sign” Free check engine light checks”. Immediately after hooking up the sensor they got the code for a bad crankshaft position sensor. The part costs $68 and the labor is about $120. Going to replace this part and see what happens.

We have been having the same problem with our 2000 Impala. Stalls going down the road. No codes when you take it to the mechanic. We have got a tune up and replaced the fuel pressure regulator. I see several people have replaced the crankshaft sensor. I would like to know if that actually fixed the problem. Our mechanic doesn't want to replace a part that doesn't fix the problems.

Update from Jul 8, 2011: We have been driving our car about three weeks since we replaced the fuel pressure regulator. It has not stalled . Since it was stopping almost every time we drove it before replacing the fuel pressure regulator we are thinking the problem is solved. It was a $85 fix.

While on my way to work I started experiencing a miss coming from my engine like it wanted to quit. I got to a stop sign and that was it completely died. I called a mechanic friend and he came to assit me. Connected to that sensor is a cable, when he took the cable out it started right up so he said my sensor was bad. Had it replaced. Three weeks later my check engine light kept coming on. Took it to Auto Zone they put it to the test and it came back my EGR Valve. Could be replaced or cleaned. I called my mechanic friend he suggested replaced. I opted for the lesser. You know the old saying, " Pay me now or Pay me later". Do your self a favor and Replace the EGR valve. Today it cost me another 260.00. Why you may ask, the EGR Valve was bad and so it all kept backing up inside the Mass Air Flow sensor. So, had to get a new Mass Air Flow Sensor and a EGR Valve, clean the inside and hoses and reset the check engine light code sensor. Thank God for Mechanic Friends that will help a lady in distress. So far running like a charm.

I've had my 2000 Impala for a couple months now. Ran great until now, while I was on my way to work my car jolted a couple times then finally came to a halt on the side of the road. the car smelled like gas from the inside. I'm thinking clogged fuel filter or fuel pump but not sure. anybody with similar problems plz let me know, its been a pain in my ass today. THANKS!!!!!!!

OMG...this car is a death trap when it decides to work....most of the time the car just doesn't start and when it does Oh Boy, Watch Out!!!!! from the gas gauge not working to the blinkers going INSANE to the Car just shutting off while driving 50mph on a busy highway....The other day as i was driving about 50 mph my car just STOPPED...Dead stop! No steering and as i watched a car in my rear vies mirror almost HIT me, I broke down and had enough..this has happened a few other times, but never on a busy road....I will NOT drive this car ever again....I called the Better business Bureau and they had chevy contact me..Well Chevy Sucks...Told me * Oh Well, there is no warrenty on the car and we haven't gotten many complaints about this problem so you have to have it fixed and pay for it* So I not so nicely told the guy to kiss my butt and said it will now become my mission since i am not driving the scary car to make sure that EVERYBODY who has this problem contacts the BBB.....Are they waiting for someone to get killed??????

My car began dying for no discernible reason, it didn't matter if I was driving on the freeway or stopped, and I couldn't figure out why. First I would see the red battery light flash and then everything would lock up. It was terrifying and would happen at the most inconvenient times (not like it's ever convenient to have a car that dies...but I digress). Sometimes it would start right back up and other times it would take a minute or two. The weird thing was it only seemed to happen in warmer was fine all winter. So at first we thought it was the air conditioning, then maybe something with the fuel intake. We kept fixing and replacing different parts, it seemed fine at first but a few days later the problem would begin again.

I found this message board and seriously could not believe how many people have had the same problem. It's honestly really frustrating and quite dangerous. We're replacing the crankshaft position sensor today, so I am hopeful hat it will finally be the end of my car troubles.

The stalling was really getting on my nerves. I replaced spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, Ignition Air Control Sensor, Crank Case Sensor and had relearn done on new crank sensor. Still the rpm's fluctuated and stalled. Today I went for test drive with dealer mechanic. On our drive he had me stop and he disconnected the mass air flow sensor and believe it or not problem solved. I am driving with the sensor disconnected right now but will have to replace it at some point because my gas mileage will not be as good without it. Dealer price for the new sensor is over $500 without taxes or installation. I am presently searching alternatives to buying from dealer. Hope this works for you.
