First of all, I’d like to say that I love my Impala, but the starting issue can be a nuisance and embarrassing at times. It doesn’t happen all the time but sometimes it doesn’t like starting without putting up a fight. In the morning it starts right up without any issue but after that it will give me trouble on occasion. For example, after work I like to stop by the park to run for 30 minutes to an hour, and when I get back it almost always acts up. It will take 2-3 tries to get going. I have noticed that the more failed start attempts that occur the harder it is to start. On the third try I usually have to hold the key for 15 seconds before it finally comes to life.

It will also start and die or die when I put it into reverse. After it dies it takes a lot of effort to get started, at least 10-15 seconds on the key and I need to give it some gas. The weird thing is that sometimes it starts right up without any issue, the hard starts only happen 5-10 times per week.

I really do love this car and am wondering if anyone has a solution. I have been dealing with this issue for several years but it always starts so I have been kind of ignoring it. Thanks!

My Impala has had a habit of giving me "false start ups" since I first owned it. I can turn the key, it'll start up, but turn back off instantaneously. Then if you turn it over again, it fires off and totally normal. It wasn't until 7/9/14 that it seriously pissed me off.

It just had it's oil changed and leaky tire repaired, and then we couldn't get the damn thing to start while it was in the mechanic's parking lot. It was not the starter or battery or ignition because it was making the whirring noise and trying to turn over. We had one of their mechanics come out to look at it, and they couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start either. So to say the least I didn't pick my car up after getting the oil changed, it has to stay there to have the engine ripped apart to figure out what the hell its problem is. To say the least this car is going to go to the salvage yard if it is going to cost me more to fix it than what I have left on it.

I will come back and update everyone on what it's problem was after we get a call back from the mechanics with a diagnosis and quote.

Update from Jul 10, 2014: Took mechanics over 24 hours to tell me what was wrong with my car. Finally got the call, the crank sensor went out, and it is going to cost me another $200. They probably won't have my car fixed until after we leave for Kansas City, so our deadline wasn't exactly met. Yes it will be ready on the day we requested, just not the time because they had to order the part in.
