Silverado LS 4.8L

  • Automatic transmission

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

My f ather-in-law passed away in 2010, and left this truck to my wife, When we got it , it only had 63000 miles on it. It's been a great truck, Its has 87500 on it now. I am in WV visiting family, an I engaged the 4x4 to visit my brothers grave, and her parent's graves too. no problems, But the service 4x4 light has came on twice since. Once when i was driving at 15mph on dirt bumpy road, and the last time while setting idling with the air con on. I am a long way from home, and just hope it all right until i get back to Alabama!

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Found a good site to purchase the 4WD switch without getting hosed at the dealership! www.partsgeek.com -- about $48.00 with shipping.

4x4 dash switch has defective solder joints. You need to re solder the switch or buy a new. if this is not repaired it could cause transfer case failures as the 4x4 will not be engaged as designed.

My service 4wd light came on a few times but went back off when i turned off my truck and turned it back on... now it is on all the time... i replaced the switch on the dash, on the transfer case, and even cleared the low input signal, but the code comes right back on... none of the lights on the switch will even come on, so therefore i cannot switch to 4wd at all... if you have electrical experience and can fix this, please email me at lelandatwill@aol.com... thanks

After my service 4wd light came on at random for a couple of months, I asked everybody I came into contact with who knew anything about cars what they thought. I was told to check everything from wiring to speed sensors to tire wear and pressure. Since being around and working on everything with wheels for the last 20 something years of my life, I was well aware of how complex today's vehicles can be. It can also get very expensive when you start the guessing game of changing parts. So when I just about decided maybe my local Chevy dealer knew a quick fix, I came across this site. I got a very helpful tip and it turned out to be an easy fix. It was a loose connection inside the 4x4 switch on the dash. Probably would have been easier to just change the switch, but cheaper for me to repair mine. A word of advice, when trying to troubleshoot a problem on a car, start with the most simple advice! Now, about those daytime running lights that seem to always burn out on 1999 to 2006 Silverados!?

The service 4WD light somehow was activated and periododically comes on and stays on all the time now. I contacted another party who claimed he fixed for 60.00 and 20 min still waiting for his response. I hope to hear something soon to repair.

Silverado LS 5.3L

Last Winter the yellow information light came on saying "Service 4WD." It happened once and the dealer told me to ignore it as long as it did not recur. It did not recur until this Winter with the colder weather. The light now comes on every time I go out with the truck after a couple miles of driving. My last research indicated that the problem was a faulty erratic switch next to the 4WD push-buttons. Fixing it required removing the dash and replacing the switch. If not fixed, if one were to use 4WD, it is possible that getting back into 2WD may not be possible or may take multiple attempts with pressing the buttons. Does anyone else have the same problem and how did you resolve it. I'd rather go to the dealer equipped with information so that they don't take me for a ride! Thank You.

This is a typical problem with these trucks and the GMC's as well. Don't bother taking it to get looked at. They will probably tell you a bunch of things they think is wrong with it. I did alot of internet research on this and bought the factory manuals with the service bulletins, and even though alot of people said it was the $400.00 to $600.00 (just parts) switching unit at the transfer case. It took $60.00 and 20 mins. to fix it.
